In the present study investigates the effect of bio-ethanol on the performance and emissions of a biodiesel blend fueled compression ignition engine. The experiments are conducted using pongamia biodiesel blend B20 (20% pongamia biodiesel +80% diesel) with 5, 7.5 and 10% (v/v) of bio-ethanol on a four stroke single cylinder diesel engine. The tests are conducted at different load conditions. Performance and emissions characteristics are investigated for different bio-ethanol compositions. The results show that the brake thermal efficiency is maximum for B20E7.5 blend with a minimum brake specific fuel consumption. Carbon monoxide emission is minimum for B20E7.5 blend and NOx emission decreases as the bio-ethanol percentage is increased from 5 to 7.5%. The study reveals that 7.5% bio-ethanol with B20 pongamia biodiesel blend results better performance and emission characteristics.

In this contemporary era it is mandatory to increasing the usage of non edible biodiesel to replace the fossil fuels. This non edible biodiesels are produced from vegetable oils which is clean burning and renewable. This paper deals with the performance and emission characteristics on diesel engine with blends of Castor oil as biodiesel. Castor oil biodiesel is prepared by the use of adding 1% v/v H2SO4 after the transesterification process. The engine tests were performed with various blends B20, B40, B60 on a single cylinder, 4-stroke, diesel engine. The result shows Higher performance and lower emissions for B20 than the diesel and other blends. The brake thermal efficiency is higher than the diesel and CO, HC and NOX emissions were 22%, 8.4%, and 21% lesser than that of diesel.

A study on performance and emission of compression ignition (CI) engine has been made by utilizing biogas blends at different loads. The flow rate of biogas with air was important parameter to get the desired results. The blend of 30% with diesel was optimum which yielded optimum emission characteristics. Higher specific fuel consumption and lower brake thermal efficiency was observed when the proportion of biogas mixes with diesel in comparison with neat diesel. The out coming results from the experimental investigation exhibited reduction in NOx emission and smoke opacity. The other emissions hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) has been higher than diesel. The use of biogas as an alternative fuel in correct proportion with diesel can meet the energy demand on scarcity of conventional fuel.

Alternative fuels have become very important nowadays and proving their importance in both positive ignition engines and compression ignition engines, so as to reduce the consumption of gasoline and diesel respectively. Also, blending of these alternative fuels (additives) into gasoline has been proved important in improving various performance parameters and reducing emission parameters. Various studies have been carried out in the field of using additives in gasoline to see the effects on performance parameters like Brake power, Brake thermal efficiency, Volumetric efficiency and brake specific fuel consumption. Also, this study emphasizes reducing the emissions to the ambient. The aim of this review is to compare and study various additives which can be blended with gasoline and study their effect on performance and emission characteristics of Spark ignition engines.

The present study examines the effect of SiO2 nano-additives on the performance and emission characteristics of a diesel engine fuelled with soybean biodiesel. Soybean biofuel was prepared using the transesterification process. Nano-additives characterisations were done using different tests such as FESEM, XRD, EDS, etc., to study the morphology of nano-additives. For proper blending of nano-additives with biodiesel, the ultrasonication process was used. Surfactant was used for the stabilisation of nano-additives. After making all the combinations of nano fuel blends, physicochemical properties were measured as per ASTM standards. Performance and emissions readings were taken at different load conditions. It was found that with the addition of SiO2 nano-additives, brake thermal efficiency (BTE) and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) was increased by 3.48-6.39% and 5.81-9.88%, respectively. Significant reduction of CO, CO2, NOx, and smoke emissions were also observed compared to baseline fule due to better combustion efficiency with the use of SiO2 nano-additive.

The increasing industrialization and motorization of the world has led to a steep rise for the demand of petroleum products. Petroleum based fuels are obtained from limited reserves. In the wake of this situation, there is an urgent need to promote use of alternative fuel which must be technically feasible, economically competitive, environmentally acceptable and readily available. In the present study, Mahua seed oil methyl esters (MSOME) were prepared through transesterification and evaluation of important physico-chemical properties was carried and the properties were found within acceptable limits. A compression ignition engine was fuelled with three blends of MSOME with diesel (10, 20 and 30% on volume basis) and various performance and emission characteristics were evaluated and results compared with baseline data of diesel. The results suggest the BTE was higher for MSOME blends and BSFC, HC and smoke opacity were lower as compared to diesel fuel. This may be attributed to improved combustion for MSOME are oxygenated fuels and have higher cetane number. The values of NOx were found almost nearer for all blends as compared to diesel. Addition of 1-hexanol (Ignition improver) 0.5%, 1% volume ratios to the optimum blend (MSOME30) for evaluating the engine performance and emissions parameters and the main purpose of ignition improver is to improve combustion process and reduction in engine emissions. Finally results shows that performance and emissions have been to justify the potentiality of the mahua seed oil methyl esters as alternative fuel for compression ignition engines without any modifications

The performance and emissions of a compression ignition engine fuelled with diesel/dimethoxymethane (DMM) blends were studied. The results showed that the engine's thermal efficiency increased and the diesel equivalent brake specific fuel consumption (b.s.f.c.) decreased as the oxygen mass fraction (or DMM mass fraction) of the diesel/DMM blends increased. This change in the diesel/DMM blends was caused by an increased fraction of the premixed combustion phase, an oxygen enrichment, and an improvement in the diffusive combustion phase. A remarkable reduction in the exhaust CO and smoke can be achieved when operating on the diesel/DMM blend. Flat NO x/smoke and thermal efficiency/smoke curves are presented when operating on the diesel/DMM fuel blends, and a simultaneous reduction in both NO x and smoke can be realized at large DMM addition. Thermal efficiency and NO x give the highest value at 2 per cent oxygen mass fraction (or 5 per cent DMM volume fraction) for the combustion of diesel/DMM blends.
