The accumulation of rice husks (RH), oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB), and plastic waste (PW) can reduce the fertility of the soil. The objective of this study was to compare the quality of the low density particle boards using that waste. Experimental design was used by testing the quality of particle boards with a substitution of 50 % by weight of the total mixes for each waste (RH and OPEFB) and 50% of PW with 3 replications. The results revealed that the quality of the low density particle boards based on water content, density, and modulus of rupture (MOR) tests meet the requirements of SNI 03-2105-2006, whereas the modulus of elasticity (MOE), thickness swelling, water absorption, and the tension perpendicular to surface tests do not comply to the requirements. This preliminary study revealed that the quality of particle boards using OPEFB was better than the particle boards using RH for building materials such as ceilings.

The purpose of this research is to know the influence of pressure and use of conplast against mechanical properties which are a Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) and Modulus of Rupture (MOR) of plasterboard. The study is done because still low quality of plasterboard made from a mixture of ashes of oil-palm shell especially of the mechanical properties compared to the controls. The method of this reserach used variation of printed pressure and the addition of conplast. Test result is obtained that the highest value of Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) 90875.94 Kg/cm2, Modulus of Rupture (MOR) 61.16 Kg/cm2 and density values in generally good printed at the pressure 60 g/cm3 and the addition of conplast 25% as well as the composition of the ash of palm shell oil 40%: limestone 40%: cement 15%: fiber 5% and 300 mL of water.

Abstract Polystyrene was grafted onto oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) fiber in aqueous medium by using the H2O2/Fe2+ system as an initiator. Optimization of the reaction conditions was carried out by varying the reaction period, temperature, amounts of the monomer, initiator and co-catalyst. The presence of the peaks around 3026 cm-1, 698 cm-1 and 755 cm-1 in the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of the grafted product and the presence of polystyrene on the surface of grafted OPEFB in the scanning electron micrograph provided strong evidence of the grafting. The maximum percentage of grafting (about 200%) was achieved when the reaction was carried on for 4 h at a temperature of 65°C, using 52.27 mmol monomer, 6.00 mmol initiator and 0.26 mmol co-catalyst. The thermal stability of the grafted OPEFB was found to be better than that of the ungrafted fiber, as seen from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).

The objective of this research was to analyse organic fertilizer pellets from water hyacinth and oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) that have not been widely used in South Kalimantan. The variable of the research was the ratio of water hyacinth and OPEFB: 25%:75%, 50%:50%, and 75%:25%. The fertilizer was produced by heating the materials at 350oC, and then composting the materials using effective microorgnism 4 (EM4), and then mold into pellet shape. The results showed that the drying, heating, and composting process could increase nitrogen and phosphor content. Nitrogen in water hyacinth increased from 0.06% to 2.18%, while its increased from 0.18% to 2.49% in OPEFB. Phosphor in water hyacinth increased from 3.42% to 6.89%, while its increased from 1.95% to 4.70% in OPEFB. The quality of organic fertilizer pellet was evaluated according to Permentan No.70-2011. The result showed that the content of C-organic, macro nutrients, micro nutrients, heavy metals, Escherichia coli, Salmonella sp., moisture content, pH, and residue met the requirements. The organic fertilizer contained the highest nutrient made from 50 % water hyacinth and 50% OPEFB.Keywords: organic fertilizer pellets, oil palm empty fruit bunch, water hyacinth
