Perylene dyes have transcended their role as simple colorants and have been reinvigorated as functional dyes. Based on the substitution at the peri position by six-membered carboxylic imides, the perylene family is principally embellished with perylene diimides (PDIs) and perylene monoimides (PMIs). Perylene dyes are widely acclaimed and adorned on account of their phenomenal thermal, chemical, and photostability juxtaposed with their high absorption coefficient and near-unity fluorescence quantum yield. Although symmetric PDIs have always been in the limelight, its asymmetrical counterpart PMI is already rubbing shoulders, thanks to the consistent efforts of several scientific minds. Recently, there has been an upsurge in engendering PMI-based versatile organic architectures decked with intriguing photophysical properties and pertinent applications. In this review, the synthesis and photophysical features of various PMI-based derivatives along with their relevant applications in the arena of organic photovoltaics, photocatalysis, self-assembly, fluorescence sensing, and bioimaging are accrued and expounded, hoping to enlighten the less delved but engrossing realm of PMIs.

Lipophilic substituted zinc(II) phthalocyanines: 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octakis[(N,N-dimethylaminoethylsulfanyl)]phthalocyaninatozinc(II) (S1) and tetrakis(N,N-dibutylaminoethoxy)phthalocyaninatozinc(II) (3) were incorporated into soybean L-α-phosphatidylcholine (SPC) liposomes of 100 nm diameter. Liposomes were characterized by static light scattering (SLS), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), and differential scanning calorimetry. The fluorescence quantum yield and singlet molecular oxygen production of 3 are Φ F = 0.15 and ΦΔ = 0.24, respectively, whereas the same photophysical parameters for S1 are Φ F = 0.13 and ΦΔ = 0.51. Higher values of Φ F and ΦΔ are obtained in organic solvent for both dyes. Synthesis of compound 3 has also been reported.

3-Amino-1-phenylprop-1-ene (cinnamylamine) and some derivatives were examined as substrates for monoamine oxidases A and B in mitochondria. All of the amines examined were readily oxidized by monoamine oxidase B but much less readily by monoamine oxidase A. E-Cinnamylamine was found to have Km 0.025 mM and Vmax. 3.9 nmol/min per mg of mitochondrial protein. Corresponding values with monoamine oxidase A were 0.026 mM and 0.85 nmol/min per mg respectively. Despite their different stereochemistry, E- and Z-N-methylcinnamylamines were almost equally effective as substrates for monoamine oxidase B. The characteristic u.v. absorbance and high absorption coefficient of cinnamaldehyde, the product produced by enzymic oxidation of cinnamylamine, is utilized in a sensitive continuous spectrophotometric assay for both enzymes in the rat and for the assay of a purified monoamine oxidase B from bovine liver.
