Introduction Several studies show correlations between congenital toxoplasmosis and hearing loss, with a broad diversity of levels of hearing loss and specifications of hearing disorders. Objective To describe the studies found in the literature regarding hearing disorders in congenital toxoplasmosis. Data Synthesis A literature review was conducted on the Lilacs, SciELO, PubMed and Scopus databases by combining the following keywords: congenital toxoplasmosis and hearing. Based on this search strategy, 152 papers were found, the majority published on the Scopus and PubMed databases from 1958 to 2015. After the application of the inclusion criteria, 8 articles published between 1980 and 2015 were included in the present study. Conclusion This review showed a moderate evidence of the association between hearing disorders and congenital toxoplasmosis, which is characterized by sensorineural hearing loss. However, there are gaps in the description of the specific characteristics of the type and level of hearing loss, or of other possible disorders involved in the auditory processing.

As the structure of the ear is made of little more than cartilage, a limited blood supply, and a thin layer of skin, trauma in this area can easily manifest from a variety of causes. Some common examples of trauma involve laceration, piercing (intentional or otherwise), infection causing chondritis, blunt trauma causing necrosis, rupture of the tympanic membrane, perforation of the ear drum, and acoustic trauma that may result in hearing disorders such as tinnitus and high-frequency hearing loss. Acute hearing loss shows in two forms: conductive hearing loss and sensorineural hearing loss, the latter of which is caused by damage to the anatomic or neurologic structures of the ear dedicated to hearing. Sensorineural hearing loss generally has a poor prognosis and mandates prompt referral to an otolaryngologist.  This review contains 4 figures, 13 tables, and 32 references. Abstract Objective Macrolide antibiotics are among the most commonly used antibiotics; the association of macrolide antibiotics exposure with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) has been hypothesized. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library from inception to 15 July 2019 to identify studies used macrolide antibiotics for any indication. The results were reported as odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) using random-effects model to derive the association of macrolide antibiotics exposure with SNHL. The objective of this meta-analysis was to estimate the association of macrolide antibiotics exposure and SNHL from up-to-date evidence. Key findings Nine studies met the inclusion criteria. There was no statistically significant association between macrolide antibiotics exposure and SNHL; the OR was 1.20 (95% CI: 0.96 to 1.49). No significant association was found with any of the subgroup meta-analyses. Summary Whilst the frequency of SNHL was higher with macrolide antibiotics exposure compared with controls, overall, no association was found between macrolide antibiotics and SNHL.

Highlights • Dissecting basilar artery aneurysm (DBAA) is relatively rare. • We report the first case of a DBAA manifesting as sudden sensorineural hearing loss. • This case report adds to the symptom spectrum of DBAA.

Sphenoid wing meningiomas are tumors that typically present with vision deterioration and neurological changes due to their proximity to the sella, cavernous sinus, and other vital structures. Some unusual symptoms have also been described in the literature, such as cognitive dysfunction, parkinsonism, and intracerebral hemorrhage. In this report, we detail another unusual case of sphenoid wing meningioma in a 63-year-old female who presented with left sudden sensorineural hearing loss. A brief review of the literature is also included.

AbstractOver the past decades, different types of auditory models have been developed to study the functioning of normal and impaired auditory processing. Several models can simulate frequency-dependent sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), and can in this way be used to develop personalized audio-signal processing for hearing aids. However, to determine individualized SNHL profiles, we rely on indirect and non-invasive markers of cochlear and auditory-nerve (AN) damage. Our progressive knowledge of the functional aspects of different SNHL subtypes stresses the importance of incorporating them into the simulated SNHL profile, but has at the same time complicated the task of accomplishing this on the basis of non-invasive markers. In particular, different auditory evoked potential (AEP) types can show a different sensitivity to outer-hair-cell (OHC), inner-hair-cell (IHC) or AN damage, but it is not clear which AEP-derived metric is best suited to develop personalized auditory models. This study investigates how simulated and recorded AEPs can be used to derive individual AN- or OHC-damage patterns and personalize auditory processing models. First, we individualized the cochlear-model parameters using common methods of frequency-specific OHC-damage quantification, after which we simulated AEPs for different degrees of AN-damage. Using a classification technique, we determined the recorded AEP metric that best predicted the simulated individualized CS profiles. We cross-validated our method using the dataset at hand, but also applied the trained classifier to recorded AEPs from a new cohort to illustrate the generalisability of the method.

This is a protocol for a rapid review of the effectiveness of soil loosening to ameliorate compaction caused by cattle treading from dairy production on UK dairy farms. The review will synthesise relevant literature that explores the impacts that can be derived from mechanical soil loosening for improved soil quality, productivity (i.e. yield) and the environment. The protocol outlines the rationale, objectives, inclusion criteria, search strategy and screening processes for the meta-analysis, and the plans for data extraction, risk of bias and data synthesis approaches.

AbstractBackground:Larsen's syndrome is primarily known as an orthopaedic disease. However, it has been found to be associated with conductive hearing loss caused by ossicular malformation. The possibility of a sensorineural hearing impairment as an additional part of this syndrome has been rather neglected in the past.Method:Case report and literature review.Patient and results:We present a teenage boy suffering from typical Larsen's syndrome. Despite no history of recurrent middle-ear infections, he showed a bilaterally symmetrical, mixed hearing loss dominated by an extensive sensorineural component. In order to review the corresponding literature, a Medline search was performed using the criteria ‘Larsen's syndrome’ and ‘hearing loss/deficit’.Conclusion:The literature review showed the presented case to be the first sufficiently documented report describing a predominant sensorineural hearing loss in a Larsen's syndrome patient. Although a specific association of Larsen's syndrome with sensorineural hearing loss is still speculative, this case might give grounds for further examinations of this rare finding.
