AbstractFacile, iodine-mediated access to N-aryl-2-benzoxazolamines has been achieved in a one-pot manner under mild reaction conditions. Reaction of 2-aminophenols and aryl isothiocyanates afforded N-aryl-2-benzoxazolamines in the presence of molecular iodine and pyridine in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature in moderate to excellent yields.

Aim and Objective: Pyrazolone sulfones have been reported to exhibit herbicidal and antibacterial activities. In spite of their good bioactivities, only a few methods have been developed to prepare pyrazolone sulfones. However, the substrate scope of these methods is limited. Moreover, the direct sulfonylation of pyrazolone by aryl sulfonyl chloride failed to give pyrazolone sulfones. Thus, developing a more efficient method to synthesize pyrazolone sulfones is very important. Materials and Method: Pyrazolone, aryl sulphonyl hydrazide, iodine, p-toluenesulphonic acid and water were mixed in a sealed tube, which was heated to 100°C for 12 hours. The mixture was cooled to 0°C and m-CPBA was added in batches. The mixture was allowed to stir for 30 min at room temperature. The crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatography to afford sulfuryl pyrazolone. Results: In all cases, the sulfenylation products were formed smoothly under the optimized reaction conditions, and were then oxidized to the corresponding sulfones in good yields by 3-chloroperoxybenzoic acid (m-CPBA) in water. Single crystal X-ray analysis of pyrazolone sulfone 4aa showed that the major tautomer of pyrazolone sulfones was the amide form instead of the enol form observed for pyrazolone thioethers. Moreover, the C=N double bond isomerized to form an α,β-unsaturated C=C double bond. Conclusion: An efficient method to synthesize pyrazolone thioethers by iodine-catalyzed sulfenylation of pyrazolones with aryl sulfonyl hydrazides in water was developed. Moreover, this method was employed to synthesize pyrazolone sulfones in one-pot by subsequent sulfenylation and oxidation reactions.

AbstractStarting from readily available 2-naphthol, aldehydes, aryl and alkylamines, a variety of Betti bases were efficiently synthesized utilizing a catalytic amount of cerium (IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN) at room temperature. This protocol has advantages of high yield, mild reaction conditions, no environmental pollution, diversity of reactants and simple work up procedure.

A copper(I)-mediated tandem three-component reaction using alkynes, azides, allyl iodides, CuI and NaNH2 is developed. The reactions proceed smoothly at room temperature to afford 5-allyl-1,2,3-triazoles, which can be further converted into 1,2,3-triazole-fused tricyclic scaffolds. This method features an efficient one-pot cascade route using commercial alkynes and affords the corresponding 5-allyl-1,2,3-triazoles with high yields and good selectivity under mild reaction conditions.

A visible-light photoredox-catalyzed oxidation/[3+2] cycloaddition/oxidative aromatization cascade reaction of [(3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-2(1H)-yl)methyl]phosphonates and activated olefins or alkynes for the efficient synthesis of potentially biological active pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinoline-substituted phosphonates was developed. This transformation features mild reaction conditions (i.e., visible light irradiation, room temperature), molecular oxygen (O2) as a green oxidant, simple ‘one-pot’ operation.

AbstractA rapid and an efficient one-pot method for the synthesis of quinoxalines catalysed by ZnO-beta zeolite at room temperature is described. This environmentally benign method provides several advantages over methods that are currently employed such as a simple work-up, mild reaction conditions, good to excellent yields, and a process to recover and reuse the catalyst for several cycles with consistent activity.

Herein, we report on the metal-free, one-pot synthesis of industrially important dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from molecular CO2 under ambient conditions. In this process, initially the CO2 was chemisorbed through the formation of a switchable ionic liquid (SIL), [DBUH] [CH3CO3], by the interaction of CO2 with an equivalent mixture of organic superbase 1,8-diazabicyclo-[5.4.0]-undec-7-ene (DBU) and methanol. The obtained SIL further reacted with methyl iodide (CH3I) to form DMC. The synthesis was carried out in both dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and methanol. Methanol is preferred, as it not only served as a reagent and solvent in CO2 capture and DMC synthesis, but it also assisted in controlling the side reactions between chemical species such as CH3I and [DBUH]+ cation and increased the yield of DMC. Hence, the use of methanol avoided the loss of captured CO2 and favored the formation of DMC with high selectivity. Under the applied reaction conditions, 89% of the captured CO2 was converted to DMC. DBU was obtained, achieving 86% recovery of its salts formed during the synthesis. Most importantly, in this report we describe a simple and renewable solvent-based process for a metal-free approach to DMC synthesis under industrially feasible reaction conditions.

An efficient pseudo six-component synthesis of bis-spiropiperidines is described by one-pot condensation of formaldehyde, aromatic amine and dimedone or N,N-dimethyl-barbituric acid using nano-CuFe2O4@chitosan at room temperature. This method provides several advantages including mild reaction conditions, applicability to wide range of substrates, reusability of the catalyst and little catalyst loading.

A one-pot three-component synthesis of dihydropyrimidinones via a molecular iodine-catalyzed tandem reaction of simple readily available mono-substituted urea, alkylaldehyde, and arylaldehyde has been developed. The reaction proceeds with high chemo- and regioselectivity to give highly diverse dihydropyrimidinones in reasonable yields under mild reaction conditions. Moreover, the first catalytic enantioselective version of this reaction was also realized by using chiral spirocyclic SPINOL-phosphoric acids.

Amberlyst A21 catalyzed one-pot three-component coupling of aldehyde and malononitrile with active methylene compounds such as acetylacetone and ethyl acetoacetate for the synthesis of pharmaceutically important polyfunctionalized 4H-pyrans has been reported. Simple experimental procedure, no chromatographic purification, no hazardous organic solvents, easy recovery and reusability of the catalyst, and room temperature reaction conditions are some of the highlights of this protocol for the synthesis of pharmaceutically relevant focused libraries.
