Human trafficking (HT), also known as modern-day slavery, has received significant emphasis during the last decade. Globalization and transnational migration trends continue to amplify economic disparities and increase the vulnerability of oppressed populations to HT. The three major types of HT are labor trafficking, sex trafficking, and war slavery. Victims of HT are exploited for their labor or services and are typically forced to work in inhumane conditions. The majority of these victims are from marginalized populations throughout the world. Although both men and women are victims of HT, women and children are heavily targeted. Interdisciplinary and multi-level approaches are necessary to effectively combat HT. Combating HT is particularly relevant to the profession of social work with its mission of social justice. To address the needs of the most vulnerable of society, implications for social workers are discussed.

Combating Human Trafficking Through Criminal Law. In modern day slavery does not exist anymore. However, the practice of slavery in modern times transforms into human trafficking. Trafficking in persons in general can be defined as a condition where people, especially women and children, are for sale to work and they are forced to be involve in prostitution. Then the question is, how is it necessary to criminalize human trafficking? This article concludes that the actions to criminalize human trafficking is right based on the theory of crime. In addition, it is in line with the politics of state law as reflected in the national long-term development plan. DOI: 10.15408/jch.v1i1.2982

The study observes the core of both traffickingin persons and security offering a preliminary understandingthe interconnection between the two concepts which is indeed aprecondition of the more thorough contemplation of this securityproblem. Noteworthy is also the further elaboration of the riskthat link between violence and modern-day slavery representshaving in mind society and the individual. This informal economyviolates the principle of morality and is understood to be one of themost offensive crimes. Its elementary features are psychological and/or physical torture, coercing into engaging in the violation of the lawand established social norms as well as transporting and harboring. The consequence of all of this is the material gain, whereas the victimappears as Machiavellian means the gain will justify. Traffickingemerges in different forms, the most discernible of which are forcedlabor and sexual exploitation that is among the hardest forms ofdesecrating human soul. Unfortunately, it is a common phenomenonthat many people (some independent estimates mention a figure ofseveral million) around the world, women and children, in particular, every year become victims of this violence. Tough living conditions,as well as uncertain economic future, are among fundamentalcauses infecting healthy society. If a well-organised criminal networkor a ‘hidden economy’ succeeds to impose the rule of conduct, thenhuman trafficking finds fertile soil in which to grow. Having beenlured the victims later realize where they are, but many never returnto their families, and that terrible fate should make society do whatcan be done and help them.

Febrile malaria and asymptomatic malaria parasitemia substantially decrease iron absorption in single-meal, stable isotope studies in women and children, but to date there is no evidence of decreased efficacy of iron-fortified foods in malaria-endemic regions. Without inadequate malarial surveillance or health care, giving iron supplements to children in areas of high transmission could increase morbidity and mortality. The most likely explanation is the appearance of non-transferrin-bound iron (NTBI) in the plasma. NTBI forms when the rate of iron influx into the plasma exceeds the rate of iron binding to transferrin. Two studies in women have reported substantially increased NTBI with the ingestion of iron supplements. Our studies confirm this, but found no significant increase in NTBI on consumption of iron-fortified food. It seems likely that the malarial parasite in hepatocytes can utilize NTBI, but it cannot do so in infected erythrocytes. NTBI however may increase the sequestration of parasite-infected erythrocytes in capillaries. Bacteremia is common in children with severe malaria and sequestration in villi capillaries could lead to a breaching of the intestinal barrier, allowing the passage of pathogenic bacteria into the systemic circulation. This is especially important as frequent high iron doses increase the number of pathogens in the intestine at the expense of the barrier bacteria.
