Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify and prioritize management practices that have the potential to improve labor productivity in multi-storey building construction projects. Design/methodology/approach The study adopted two-phase mixed-methods research design and 58 project managers, contract administrators and project coordinators were involved in the survey. During Phase I, qualitative data were collected from 19 experts using interviews and the management practices that could enhance labor productivity in multi-storey building construction projects were identified. In Phase II, quantitative data were collected from 39 contractors involved in the delivery of multi-storey building projects by using questionnaires. The data were analyzed to prioritize the practices identified in Phase I. Findings Well-defined scope of work, safety and health policy, safety and health plan, hazard analysis, long-lead materials identification, safe work method statement, and toolbox safety meetings are the top seven practices that have the potential to improve labor productivity in multi-storey building projects. Originality/value The research identifies the management practices that can be implemented to enhance labor productivity in multi-storey building construction projects in the context of Australia. Being the first study in the Australian context, the findings can be used as benchmark for international comparison.

Construction labor productivity is the most determinant of success of any construction project. Labor is considered as more variable and unpredictable cost component for the successful accomplishment of construction projects. The main aim of this research is to develop an artificial neural network (ANN) model to predict the production rate for brick masonry work by assessing the various factor affecting labor productivity. Out of forty-four factors selected from a literature review, the top thirteen factors were selected for model development after the questionnaire survey and ranking them based on Relative Importance Index (RII). The model was developed in Neurosolution version 7.1.1.1 using the various input data set collected from active construction site of brick masonry. 65% of data set were used for training, 20 % of data set were used for cross-validation and remaining 15 % of data set were used for testing. The error between actual productivity and estimated productivity was computed using Mean Square Error (MSE) which was 0.019 which verified that the estimated production rate was within an acceptable range. After the successful testing of model, a sensitivity analysis was performed to analyze the order of most influencing factors affecting labor productivity. The developed ANN model can be used for estimating the labor productivity of brick masonry work for any building construction project by incorporating the influence of selected parameters or factors.

Abstract The objective of this study is to analyse the impact of management practices on the productivity of building construction projects in India. The methodology adopted for this study is to identify and analyse the management practice attributes from the literature review and expert focus group interviews. The identified attributes were analysed and priorities using relative weight were given by the respondents. The collected data were further analysed using SPSS 21 software. The quantitative research methodology was adopted to analyse the collected data and the following tools and techniques were applied to the data: reliability analysis to check the consistency of data collected for this study and relative importance index (RII) to prioritise and rank the attributes based on the weighted average score given by the respondents. The findings of this study concluded that coordination between all stakeholders, ability to handle the crisis by the project managers, social skills of key team managers, timely payment of completed works and design capability and frequent design changes are the most significant attributes of management practice, affecting construction productivity and having a rating on the RII of 0.91, 0.90, 0.88, 0.87 and 0.87.

Project failure is an increasingly worrying challenge in Kenya. In implementation of exchequer funded building construction projects, the challenge is real. The study examined the influence of risk management practices on the performance of exchequer funded building construction projects in Machakos County. Little research has been conducted on risk identification and its influence on performance of exchequer funded building construction in Machakos County, this study intended to on build onto the already existing body of knowledge. The study was informed by Agency theory and it employed a descriptive survey research design. The target population was 585 National Construction Authority registered contractors and sample size was 232 respondents. In this case the sample selected is deemed to be representative enough of the whole population and therefore valid and genuine generalizations can be made. Methodology involved in collection and analysis of primary data. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze data. Quantitative data was tabulated and analyzed using frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviation. Test statistics computed to establish degree of relationship between the variables was Fisher test. The findings depict that risk identification leads to the performance of exchequer funded building construction Projects by factor of 0.237 with P values of 0.008. At 5% level of significance and 95% level of confidence, this is statistically significant as the P-Value is lower than 0.05. The results for testing the hypothesis were (P=0.008<0.05)as the P-Value is lower than 0.05. The study therefore rejects the null hypothesis. The study concludes that there is significant positive relationship between that risk identification leads to the performance of exchequer funded building construction Projects. Further research can be done to assess the risk identification in other county governments and national government projects in Kenya and other countries in order to establish whether the explored factors can be generalized to influence the performance of exchequer funded building construction Projects. The findings of this paper will be used to serve as a longer-term safeguard against risks in construction of buildings in Kenya.

The Construction Industry is embedded with risky situations that affect construction projects and therefore requires systematic processing to achieve project objectives and ensure business sustainability (5). This research work was tries to study the risk management practice on public building construction projects and aims to identify the level that use of risk management practice especially in the public building. The data collection method was a combination of interview and questionnaire. Samples were purposively selected from clients, consultants, and contractors representatives who are now actively participating in public building construction projects. For this study, the data was collected using both primary and secondary sources. Depending on the data that was gathered from the respondent to test the level of awareness, identifying the Risk that affect the performance of public building construction project and major risk management practice on public building construction project are considered and the RII was used to rank the factors. This data was analyzed using SPSS of version 22 to perform descriptive statistics. A total of 75 questionnaires were targeted to be distributed and out of those 50 which is 66.67% are successfully responded. The finding from this study revealed that, about (52%) of the project progress is lagging from the schedule. Regarding the awareness of the risk management, (94%) of the respondents where confirmed that they have awareness of risk management ideologies and they are confident enough to implement their knowledge while, (6%) of them have no concept about the risk management. The top five risks that affect the performance of construction project have been identified and ranked. Accordingly; market condition, unexpected inflation, local taxes, inadequate production of raw materials, and the economic condition of country are the top five identified associated project risks.

Construction time overrun is considered one of the most appearing problems in construction industry. In Road construction, Equipment plays a major role, Hence there is a need for control of delay in road construction projects. This paper aims to identify the equipment delay causes in road construction projects and ranks the critical factors. The equipment delay causes were identified through pilot study and literature papers. The pilot study was done by interviewing 20 experts and the questionnaire were designed. Totally 19 causes were identified and categorized into four main groups namely 1.Maintenance related causes, 2.Equipment related causes, 3.Financial related causes and 4.Personnel related causes. The questionnaire survey received 180 responses on the opinion of Contractor, Equipment dealer, Equipment operator, Site engineer, Project manager and others. The results were analysed using Relative Important Index (RII), Ranking the equipment delay causes identifies the most risky equipment delay factors in road construction project. The most five risky factors are Lack of spare parts, Over usage of equipment leads to crashing, Inadequate equipment, Non allocation of fuel purchase staff and Inexpert or unpractised equipment operator

Quality management systems are being operated in almost all sectors for products and services in the present time. In the construction sector quality control and quality assurance are of great concern for the construction project managers as the poor quality of construction results in early defects and failure of the structure this lowers the reputation of the company and leads to heavy repair costs. Further extra expenditure in achieving quality control and quality assurance is compensated by the advantages gained in the form of less maintenance, better quality and effective utilization of construction resources. There are many problems in applying the quality management effectively in construction due to its typical nature. There is a need to evaluate the effectiveness of quality management system (QMS) in construction projects. In the present work an effort is made to assess the quality management and quality assurance practices awareness and implementation among the construction personnel involved in building construction. A questionnaire containing questions related to quality control and quality assurance aspects of building construction is prepared and send to the construction personnel in Gwalior and nearby cities of Madhya Pradesh, India.
