Abstract We performed a seismic vulnerability assessment that involves geotechnical and building structure analysis for Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, a city located along the pacific coast. Like many other Latin American cities, has significant seismic risk. We implemented the multi-channel analysis of surface waves and the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio methods to estimate shear wave velocity and soil resonance frequency. We considered standard penetration test to determine the penetration resistance and soil classification. We also defined building typologies based on construction materials and structural systems. The VS30 parameter shows that Puerto Vallarta has the three poorest soil classifications. The resonance frequency parameter shows four zones with different fundamental soil periods. We inferred the building's vulnerability from the coupling between the structural and soil fundamental period and the soil characteristics. The analysis shows several vulnerable buildings scatters within the city, e.g., within the tourist area, confined masonry buildings from one to five stories and moment resistance frame buildings up to 12 in the tourist area, poorly confined masonry houses of one to two stories, and confined masonry buildings of one to five stories in the residential/commercial. We present an approach that combines the academic and government to solve a real and transcendental problem since it might directly affect the regulation and structure evaluations in the area. We are sure that these exercises are of great interest in urban growth areas in other parts of the world, especially in Latin America, to achieve seismic risk mitigation.

This paper presents a practical displacement-based evaluation procedure for the seismic assessment of low-height regular confined masonry buildings. First, the so-called Coefficient Method established in several FEMA documents is adapted to obtain rapid estimates of inelastic roof displacement demands for regular confined masonry buildings. For that purpose, a statistical study of constant relative strength inelastic displacement ratios of single-degree-of-freedom systems representing confined masonry buildings is carried out. Second, a nonlinear simplified model is introduced to perform pushover analysis of regular confined masonry buildings whose global and local behavior is dominated by shear deformations in the masonry walls. The model, which can be applied through the use of commercial software, can be used to establish the capacity curve of such buildings. Finally, the evaluation procedure is applied to a three-story building tested at a shaking table testing facility.

Engineered masonry, namely reinforced and confined masonry, has been widely used for housing construction in Chile over the last few decades. Most one- and two-story single-family masonry dwellings did not experience any damage due to the 27 February 2010 Maule earthquake, with the exception of a few dwellings of pre-1970 vintage, which suffered moderate damage. A similar statement can be made for three- and four-story confined masonry buildings: a large majority of buildings remained undamaged. However, several reinforced and partially confined three- and four-story masonry buildings suffered extensive damage, and two three-story partially confined buildings collapsed. The key damage patterns and the causes of damage are discussed in the paper. The extent of damage observed in the field was correlated with calculated vulnerability indices, and relevant recommendations were made related to the design and construction practices.

Confined Masonry (CM) structural system consists of masonry walls enclosed by reinforced concrete (RC) confining elements (tie-columns and tie-beams) and is usually supported by reinforced concrete floors and roof. This technology has been widely used for construction of low-and medium-rise buildings in Latin America, Europe, South Asia, and Middle East, and it has a proven record of good performance in damaging earthquakes. CM construction is not currently practiced in India and is not addressed by Indian design codes. Seismic analysis of CM wall panels can be performed using Wide Column Model (WCM), also known as Equivalent Frame Model. WCM is a macro model where a wall structure and the supporting floors and roof are idealized as a bare frame. CM walls can be modelled as wide columns with transformed section properties accounting for composite action of masonry and RC tie-columns. Beams in these bare frames have rigid segments simulating the effect of wall stiffness, and flexible segments that simulate the effect of floor and roof slabs. WCM has been recognized as a viable model for seismic analysis of CM buildings in Latin American countries, however this model is not well known in India. The results presented in this paper are based on linear elastic analyses of typical multi-storey CM solid walls and walls with openings. The output parameters include shear forces, bending moments, stiffness, and lateral displacements. A comparison of the results obtained using the WCM and the Finite Element Method (FEM) has been presented. WCM can be useful for seismic analysis of CM buildings since it does not require significant computational effort and can be applied using a variety of software packages.
