Two models are used to analyze the spectra of aniline and nitrobenzene. These are the localized-orbital model, in which there is no delocalization of the electrons between the phenyl group and the substituent, and the iso-conjugate-hydrocarbon model, in which there is complete delocalization. Neither model is very satisfactory with zero-order wave functions and energies. Both give a satisfactory interpretation of the spectra if configuration interaction is taken into account but the localized-orbital model is rather better for calculating energies. The localized-orbital model is also more readily applied to polysubstituted benzenes.

Various important characteristics of finite polyene chains are found on the basis of approximate solutions of the characteristic equations. The obtained approximate and limit expressions for the wave functions, energy gap, etc. can be used for the analysis of the electronic and transport properties of polyenes, which gives a deeper understanding of the fundamental properties of finite alternating polyene chains. We also demonstrate the high efficiency of the proposed approximations as a zero-order estimate for the numerical solution of the characteristic equation.

A large-amplitude upper-hybrid wave in a plasma cylinder is susceptible to parametric decay into a lower-hybrid wave and an upper-hybrid wave. The perpendicular and parallel motions of electrons play equally important roles in the nonlinear interaction. The coupled-mode equations are solved using a perturbation technique. The growth rate of the instability is less sensitive to the radial mode number of the sideband. However, for higher-order radial modes it falls off as the overlap of the interacting wave functions decreases.

The positions of high-order Laue zone (HOLZ) lines in the zero order disc of convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) patterns are extremely sensitive to local lattice parameters. With proper care, these can be measured to a level of one part in 104 in nanometer sized areas. Recent upgrades to the Cornell UHV STEM have made energy filtered CBED possible with a slow scan CCD, and this technique has been applied to the measurement of strain in In0.2Ga0.8 As wires.Semiconductor quantum wire structures have attracted much interest for potential device applications. For example, semiconductor lasers with quantum wires should exhibit an improvement in performance over quantum well counterparts. Strained quantum wires are expected to have even better performance. However, not much is known about the true behavior of strain in actual structures, a parameter critical to their performance.
