Anthelepis, a new genus for four mainly tropical species of Cyperaceae from Australia, New Caledonia and South-East Asia

A new genus, Anthelepis R.L.Barrett, K.L.Wilson & J.J.Bruhl, is described for four Cyperaceae species from mainly tropical areas of South-East Asia, New Caledonia and Australia. The relationships of the three previously described species have been much-debated. In recent decades, they have most commonly been placed in either Schoenus L. or Tricostularia Nees ex Lehm., but molecular phylogenetic data have demonstrated that they are not closely related to either genus and a new generic name is required. The following three new combinations are made: Anthelepis guillauminii (Kük.) R.L.Barrett, K.L.Wilson & J.J.Bruhl (based on Schoenus guillauminii Kük.), A. paludosa (R.Br.) R.L.Barrett, K.L.Wilson & J.J.Bruhl (based on Chaetospora paludosa R.Br.) and A. undulata (Thwaites) R.L.Barrett, K.L.Wilson & J.J.Bruhl (based on Cladium undulatum Thwaites). One new species, Anthelepis clarksonii R.L.Barrett, K.L.Wilson & J.J.Bruhl, is described from northern Queensland, Australia, as distinct from A. undulata. Full descriptions, illustrations and a key to species are provided. All species are confirmed as having C3 anatomy.

AbstractThe taxonomy of the Asian genera of the subfamily Betylobraconinae, a small and understudied group within the hymenopteran family Braconidae, is revised. A new genus exclusively from the Asian region, Asiabregma gen. nov., containing three species (A. ryukyuensis sp. nov. (type species, Japan and Malaya), A. makiharai sp. nov. (Japan) and A. sulaensis (van Achterberg), comb. nov. (Indonesia)) is described. One new species of Aulosaphobracon, A. striatus sp. nov. from Vietnam, and one of Facitorus, F. amamioshimus sp. nov. from Japan, are also described. Based on molecular phylogenetic analyses using COI mtDNA and 28S rRNA sequences, the three genera previously placed in the tribe Facitorini, Facitorus, Conobregma and Jannya, together with Asiabregma gen. nov., are transferred to the rogadine tribe Yeliconini.

Iljinskaea is described as a new monospecific genus based on a critical evaluation of morphology and in light of the extensive molecular phylogenetic data. The new combination I. planisiliqua is proposed, and the distinguishing characters separating the new genus from Conringia are discussed. The new tribal assignment of Iljinskaea in the Isatideae is discussed and compared with the previous placement in the Conringieae.

Fossil pollen and spores preserved in drillcore from both the upper South Alligator River (SARV) in the Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory and the North-West Shelf, Western Australia provide the first record of plants and plant communities occupying the coast and adjacent hinterland in north-west Australia during the Paleogene 66 to 23million years ago. The palynologically-dominant woody taxon is Casuarinaceae, a family now comprising four genera of evergreen scleromorphic shrubs and trees native to Australia, New Guinea, South-east Asia and Pacific Islands. Rare taxa include genera now mostly restricted to temperate rainforest in New Guinea, New Caledonia, New Zealand, South-East Asia and/or Tasmania, e.g. Dacrydium, Phyllocladus and the Nothofagus subgenera Brassospora and Fuscospora. These appear to have existed in moist gorges on the Arnhem Land Plateau, Kakadu National Park. No evidence for Laurasian rainforest elements was found. The few taxa that have modern tropical affinities occur in Eocene or older sediments in Australia, e.g. Lygodium, Anacolosa, Elaeagnus, Malpighiaceae and Strasburgeriaceae. We conclude the wind-pollinated Oligocene to possibly Early Miocene vegetation in the upper SARV was Casuarinaceae sclerophyll forest or woodland growing under seasonally dry conditions and related to modern Allocasuarina/Casuarina formations. There are, however, strong floristic links to coastal communities growing under warm to hot, and seasonally to uniformly wet climates in north-west Australia during the Paleocene-Eocene.

Abstract Gilen gen. nov. (type species G. orientalis sp. nov.) from South East Asia is described and illustrated. The new taxon has a produced mid-longitudinal facial projection, which differentiates it from all other known genera of Ichneumonidae. It belongs to the tribe Perilissini in the subfamily Ctenopelmatinae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) and is recorded from Laos, Northern Thailand and Vietnam.

Abstract G. philippii was described as a root pathogen that is particularly destructive to tropical plantation crops, especially rubber (Steyaert, 1975a). It occurs on many woody and non-woody plant hosts in South-East Asia through Indonesia to Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia (UK CAB International, 1993). Acacia trees are considered as invasive species and as an economic crop (Koutika and Richardson, 2019) and the significance of the disease is from both aspects. A similar situation exists for other trees such as Eucalyptus (Deus et al., 2019). These trees are being considered to combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and consequently disease is extremely important. Red root rot is a significant disease of tropical plantations in South-East Asia. In severely infected areas in Malaysia, root rot caused more than 40% mortality of Acacia trees aged between 9 and 14 years. In Indonesia, the disease can kill up to 28% of trees in second-rotation A. mangium plantations in Sumatra and Kalimantan. Second rotation A. mangium and A. crassicarpa plantations trees as young as 6 months old may be killed by red root disease (Gafur et al., 2015).

A new genus, Casuarinicola Taylor gen. nov., comprising five new species of jumping plant lice (Hemiptera: Triozidae) from Casuarina s.s. (Casuarinaceae) from Australia and New Caledonia, is described. New species are: C. australis Taylor sp. nov., C. nigrimaculatus Taylor sp. nov., C. mucronalatus Taylor sp. nov., C. novacaledonica Taylor sp. nov. and C. warrigalensis Taylor sp. nov. The genus is characterised by the following combination of characters: antenna short, 1.1–1.5 times width of head, genal processes short, conical, 0.2–0.5 times length of vertex, fore wing with broadly rounded to subangular apex, mottled with dark markings (in females of most species) or clear (in males of most species), male proctiger short, with broad lateral expansions, parameres simple, and female proctiger short, broadly rounded, pointed apically and with a pair of broad, flange-shaped lateral lobes. A key to species is provided, together with notes on host associations and distribution.

Sinojassus gen. nov. of tribe Iassini is described based on: two new species from China, S. loberus Dai, Zhang & Zhang sp. nov. (type species), S. aspinus Dai, Zhang & Zhang sp. nov.; one new species from China and Thailand, S. compressus Dai, Zhang & Zhang sp. nov.; and one new species from Vietnam, S. webbi Dai & Dietrich sp. nov. Detailed morphological descriptions, illustrations and a key to species are provided. The new genus resembles Coriojassus Evans, Hyalojassus Evans and Trocnadella Singh-Pruthi in the structure of the male genitalia. The style has an elongate apodeme and short apophysis, the connective is absent, and the aedeagus is simple, without processes, and connected to other parts of the genitalia by membranous ligaments. A key to Oriental genera of Iassini is also provided.

A new genus and species of cryptobenthic goby, Cerogobius petrophilus is described from the Red Sea based on nine specimens not exceeding 2.5 cm in total length, collected from a stone-rubble habitat at Thuwal, Saudi Arabia, at depths of 8–15 m. It was also observed underwater at the southern tip of Ras Mohammed and Marsa Alam in Egypt. Cerogobius petrophilus sp. nov. is unique among other gobies in its habitat, and in this regard it superficially resembles some species of blennies, occupying tight holes in stones covered with short algae. Molecular phylogenetic data suggest a close relationship between Cerogobius petrophilus sp. nov. and Hetereleotris, but the former differs from the latter morphologically in head shape with specific proportions of orbit and snout, forward-set position of eyes, a moderately large mouth, a long horn-like tentacle at the nostrils in the middle of snout, caudal peduncle deep and short, and in details of cephalic sensory system. A full description of the new genus and species is provided and is accompanied with osteological data that potentially can be informative in further comparisons with Hetereleotris.

The laniatorean family Phalangodidae has been largely reduced to a core of Holarctic species; however, many taxa were never formally transferred to other families. We examined a group of harvestmen related to Beloniscus Thorell, 1891, from South-east Asia and determined the nature of the relationships of the ‘Beloniscus-like harvestmen’, herein described as the new family Beloniscidae, fam. nov., in the broad context of Laniatores. Based on a molecular phylogenetic analysis of a broad representative laniatorean Sanger-sequences dataset we found support for our taxonomic hypotheses that (1) inclusion of Beloniscidae, fam. nov. in Phalangodidae would render the family non-monophyletic, and (2) Beloniscidae, fam. nov. represents a lineage that is morphologically and genetically distinct from all other known laniatorean families. The new family Beloniscidae is endemic to South-east Asia and comprises 37 species in two new subfamilies: Beloniscinae, subfam. nov. and Buparinae, subfam. nov. Beloniscinae includes the genera Beloniscellus Roewer, 1931, Beloniscops Roewer, 1949, Belonisculus Roewer, 1923, Beloniscus (type genus) and Kendengus Roewer, 1949. Buparinae includes the genera Buparellus Roewer, 1949, Bupares Thorell, 1889 (type genus) and Buparomma Roewer, 1949. Members of Beloniscidae are relatively homogeneous in their external morphology, but are recognised by well marked genitalic features. Male genitalia are described for exemplar species, and the morphology is compared with that of Epedanidae.
