AbstractTree peony (Paeonia sect. Moutan) is an economically important multipurpose woody plant in terms of its medical, ornamental and oil values, but its breeding and industrial development are severely limited due to inefficient traditional propagation methods and existing in vitro regeneration systems. Meristematic nodules (MNs) are an attractive alternative to solve this problem. This study first presented a protocol for in vitro regeneration of P. ostii ‘Feng Dan’ via MN culture with four consecutive steps, including embryogenic callus (EC) formation, MN induction and leaf cluster differentiation, shoot elongation, rooting and acclimatization. The highest EC induction rate (81.25%) was achieved when cotyledons were cultured on modified Murashige and Skoog (mMS) medium with 4.04 µM N-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-N-phenylurea (CPPU) + 5.37 µM α-naphthylacetic acid (NAA) for 30 days. The optimal MN induction rate (100%) and leaf cluster differentiation rate (45.83%) were obtained when ECs were cultured on modified woody plant medium (mWPM) supplemented with 2.02 µM CPPU + 2.27 µM thidiazuron (TDZ) for a subculture time of 10 days. The combination of 1.29 µM 6-benzyladenine (BA) + 0.58 µM gibberellin (GA3) yielded the best shoot elongation (13.40 shoots per nodule), rooting rate (43.33%) and consequently survival rate (45.83%). The study will be beneficial to the mass propagation, breeding and genetic improvement of tree peony.

Poplar is an illustrious industrial woody plant with rapid growth, providing a range of materials, and having simple post-treatment. Various kinds of environmental stresses limit its output. Plant annexin (ANN) is a calcium-dependent phospholipid-binding protein involved in plant metabolism, growth and development, and cooperatively regulating drought resistance, salt tolerance, and various stress responses. However, the features of the PtANN gene family and different stress responses remain unknown in poplar. This study identified 12 PtANN genes in the P. trichocarpa whole-genome and PtANNs divided into three subfamilies based on the phylogenetic tree. The PtANNs clustered into the same clade shared similar gene structures and conserved motifs. The 12 PtANN genes were located in ten chromosomes, and segmental duplication events were illustrated as the main duplication method. Additionally, the PtANN4 homogenous with AtANN1 was detected localized in the cytoplasm and plasma membrane. In addition, expression levels of PtANNs were induced by multiple abiotic stresses, which indicated that PtANNs could widely participate in response to abiotic stress. These results revealed the molecular evolution of PtANNs and their profiles in response to abiotic stress.

Purpose: Tree shaping catalog development of practical use: garden chair category; study of the ergonomic aspects of their design, calculation of the time for the formation of tree shaping objects with regard to the plant types. A deeper study of the formation of natural and artistic objects of architectural space, i.e., tree shaping.Design/methodology/approach: Ergonomic analysis, analysis of woody plants compositions in tree shaping, visual-anthropometric analysis, modeling, comparative analysis.Originality/value: 1. Proposed tree shaping catalogs in the category of garden chairs. These catalogs have no analogues in are Russia. 2. The selected woody plants of the West Siberian region, most adapted to humane correction of growth, with the ecological specification in accordance with the following parameters: gas resistance, growth rate, life cycle of a woody plant. 3. Diagrams are suggested for the garden chair dimensions (chair back height, seat width, chair leg height) depending on the woody plant (willow, Tatar maple, bird cherry).Findings: Many identified aspects are can be used in tree shaping: compositional complexity of tree shaping, woody plant type, growth characteristics, and the growing conditions.Practical implications: The obtained results can be used as in a deeper study of new approaches to the formation of open architectural spaces with plant materials.

Plant species composition according to their functional types, distribution pattern are crucial for biodiversity conservation in tropical deciduous forest. The study assessed the woody plant species diversity, stand structure and population density in the secondary deciduous forest of Chandaka wildlife sanctuary, Odisha, India. A total of 70 species belonging to 63 genera and families were documented in this study. The stem density was found to be 1080 stems/ha with reverse J-shaped population structure indicating good regeneration potential of the forests. Shannon diversity Index varied from 0 to 2.31 whereas Simpson's index varied from 0 to 0.85. The correlation study between Importance Value Index and basal area were significant (p=40.63). The present study would be helpful for conservation and management of biodiversity in secondary dry deciduous forests of Chandaka Wildlife Sanctury in particular and tropical dry forests in general.

Tea-oil tree (Camellia oleifera) is an important edible oil woody plant with a planting area of over 3,800,000 hectares in southern China. Pestalotioid fungi are associated with a wide variety of plants worldwide along with endophytes, pathogens, and saprobes. In this study, symptomatic leaves of C. oleifera were collected from Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hunan, and Jiangsu Provinces and pestalotioid fungi are characterized based on combined sequence data analyses of internal transcribed spacer (ITS), beta tubulin (tub2), and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef-1α) coupled with morphological characteristics. As a result, seven species were confirmed, of which five species are described as new viz. N. camelliae-oleiferae, P. camelliae-oleiferae, P. hunanensis, P. nanjingensis, P. nanningensis, while the other two are reported as known species, viz., N. cubana and N. iberica. Pathogenicity assays showed that all species except for P. nanjingensis developed brown lesions on healthy leaves and P. camelliae-oleiferae showed stronger virulence.

Abstract Methods for studying woody plants anatomy are now very diverse. We modified the guidelines for bark studies developed for wood analysis at all stages of preparing the woody plant samples for microscope study. For the first time, we used separation to separate hard and soft fractions of the bark tissue. Correct approach to selection of plant samples and further laboratory manipulations ensures validity of the results of our study. We select the size of the sampling area depending on the type of vegetation. In every habitat, we also include transects along the gradient of height above sea level or the impact from the source of natural stress. The results of our research will help study landscape changes during exogenous geological processes and phenomena using biological indication of geosystems.
