The genus Ceratium (Dinophyceae) in Bass Strait and adjoining waters, southern Australia

Thirty-two species of the dinoflagellate genus Ceratium Schrank (Dinophyceae, Peridiniales) are reported and described from the Bass Strait and adjoining waters, southern Australia. Ten of these species (C. setaceum, C. kofoidii, C. longirostrum, C. falcatiforme, C. contortum, C. gibberum, C. paradoxides, C. ranipes, C. vultur, C. carriense var. carriense) represent new records for the area. A new combination, Ceratium carriense var. massiliense (Gourret) Huisman, is proposed. Descriptions and illustrations are provided for all species.

This paper deals with the taxonomy of Chinese Medaurini with descriptions of two new genera, 14 new species and two new subspecies, proposal of two new combinations and report of two new records for China. A total of seven genera and 42 species are recognised in the tribe. Ten new species and two new subspecies from four recognised genera including Cnipsomorpha Hennemann, Conle, Zhang & Liu, 2008, Interphasma Chen & He, 2008, Medauroidea Zompro, 2000 and Parapachymorpha Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1893 are described. They are Cnipsomorpha bii sp. nov., C. daliensis sp. nov., C. maoershanensis sp. nov., C. wenxuani sp. nov., Interphasma elongatum elongatum sp. nov. & subsp. nov., I. elongatum parvum subsp. nov., I. huanglianshanense sp. nov., Medauroidea chenshuchuni sp. nov., Parapachymorpha dentata sp. nov., P. jinpingensis sp. nov. and P. sinica sp. nov. Two new genera, Neointerphasma gen. nov. and Neosinophasma gen. nov., are established. The former only includes Neointerphasma minutigranulatum sp. nov. The latter includes four species, N. biangulatum (Chen & Zhang, 2008) comb. nov. [transferred from Cnipsomorpha], N. tangliangi sp. nov., N. wenxuani sp. nov. and N. yunnanense sp. nov. A new combination is also suggested for Medauroidea nyalamensis (Chen, Shang & Pei, 2000) comb. nov. transferred from Ramulus Saussure, 1862. Parapachymorpha spiniger (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1907) and Medauromorpha foedata (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1907) are new records for China. Taxonomic keys are given to Cnipsomorpha, Interphasma, Medauroidea, Medauromorpha, Neosinophasma gen. nov. and Parapachymorpha.

We describe Notocomplana hagiyai sp. nov. from Ishikari Bay, Hokkaido, northern Japan. Notocomplana hagiyai sp. nov. is characterized by i) a larger prostatic vesicle relative to the seminal vesicle and ii) a Lang’s duct that is shorter than the long axis of Lang’s vesicle. Melloplana japonica (Kato, 1937) is transferred to the genus Notocomplana Faubel, 1983 based on the structure of its prostatic vesicle, and we record the finding of N. koreana (Kato, 1937) and N. septentrionalis (Kato, 1937) in western Hokkaido. A pair of new cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) primers was designed to infer the phylogeny among the four species, and we concluded that COI is more informative than 16S rRNA for barcoding polyclad flatworms.

A new species of the planthopper family Issidae, with a feature which appears to mimic small salticid spiders, is described as Chlamydopteryx mammoides sp. nov., from Queensland, Australia. Phaeopteryx Kirkaldy, 1907 is placed in synonymy under Chlamydopteryx Kirkaldy, 1907, creating the new combination Chlamydopteryx sidnicus (Kirkaldy). Tetrica scapularis Jacobi, 1928 is transferred to the genus Orinda Kirkaldy as Orinda scapularis comb. nov. and Orinda bimaculifrons Jacobi, 1928 to the genus Chlamydopteryx as Chlamydopteryx bimaculifrons comb. nov. Some new records for Australian Issidae are given. A key to the described Australian issid genera is given, along with a checklist of described species.

Based on two specimens collected in the Antarctic deep-sea (4928 m) the adult female and male of the genusPseudolamprops Gamô, 1989 are described for the first time. A new combination is proposed, Pseudolamprops profundus(Reyss, 1978) comb. nov., and several new records from the North Atlantic and Antarctica are provided. The diagnosis of Pseudolamprops is revised on the account of the new material available.

Based on field work and herbarium studies, a taxonomic revision of the genus Orbilia in the Canary Islands was carried out. Eighteen species of the genus are recognized in the present study. Eight of these are new records for the archipelago (Orbilia cejpii, O. euonymi, O. flavida, O. flavidorosella, O. hesperidea, O. scolecospora, O. vinosa and O. vitalbae). Three of them are here described in detail (O. cejpii, O. flavida and O. vitalbae), because they were not reported again since their first publication. Corrections and clarifications about the identity of four previously reported species (O. alnea, O. auricolor, O. delicatula and O. epipora) are provided, being renamed to O. eucalypti, O. tenuissima, O. xanthostigma, and O. dryadum, respectively, the last one being a new combination for O. alnea var. dryadum. Two species with a rather short original diagnoses reported for the Canary Islands are redescribed in detail (O. corculispora and O. gambelii), and those being endemic for the archipelago are illustrated and briefly discussed (Orbilia adenocarpi, O. asomatica, O. pisciformis and O. succulenticola). A key for the identification of these species, a discussion about closely related taxa, notes on their global distribution, and ecological data are provided.

The widespread and highly diverse goblin spider genus Opopaea Simon is a pantropical genus with biodiversity hotspots in Africa, Asia and Australia. We revise the Australian and Pacific species of the genus, provide redescriptions of the Australian species O. banksi (Hickman) and the Micronesian species O. foveolata Roewer, and new records of the pantropical O. deserticola Simon and O. concolor (Blackwall), as well as O. apicalis (Simon) which is newly transferred from Epectris, after the new synonymy of Epectris with Opopaea. The following species are provisionally transferred from Epectris to Opopaea, pending investigations into their generic affinities: O. conujaingensis (Xu), new combination from China; and O. mollis (Simon), new combination from Sri Lanka. Most Pacific Islands are inhabited by the four above-mentioned species but the following 15 newly described species are most likely native to the islands: from Fiji (O. fiji), Hawaii (O. hawaii), Palau (O. palau), New Caledonia (O. amieu, O. bicolor, O. burwelli, O. calcaris, O. goloboffi, O. monteithi, O. ndoua, O. platnicki, O. raveni, O. striata, O. touho, O. tuberculata). We treat the Australian Opopaea fauna and recognise 84 species including 71 new and 13 previously described species. The new Australian species include 21 species from New South Wales (O. acuminata, O. addsae, O. bushblitz, O. gerstmeieri, O. lebretoni, O. linea (also occurs in Queensland), O. magna, O. margaretehoffmannae, O. martini, O. michaeli, O. milledgei, O. nitens, O. ottoi, O. plana, O. simplex, O. sturt, O. suelewisae, O. sylvestrella, O. tenuis, O. ursulae, O. yorki); six from Northern Territory (O. ephemera, O. fishriver, O. gilliesi, O. johardingae, O. preecei, O. wongalara); 13 from Queensland (O. ameyi, O. brisbanensis, O. broadwater, O. carnarvon, O. carteri, O. chrisconwayi, O. douglasi, O. lambkinae, O. leichhardti, O. mcleani, O. proserpine, O. stanisici, O. ulrichi); three from South Australia (O. millbrook, O. mundy, O. stevensi); and 28 from Western Australia (O. aculeata, O. aurantiaca, O. billroth, O. callani, O. cowra, O. durranti, O. exoculata, O. flava, O. fragilis, O. framenaui, O. gracilis, O. gracillima, O. harmsi, O. johannae, O. julianneae, O. marangaroo, O. millstream, O. nadineae, O. pallida, O. pannawonica, O. pilbara, O. rixi, O. robusta, O. rugosa, O. subtilis, O. triangularis, O. wheelarra, O. whim). New records are provided for O. sown Baehr. Seven area-based keys to species are provided.

The article contains the description of a new genus, Davidlivingstonia Yakovlev & László, gen. nov. (Type species Zeuzera boisduvalii Herrich-Schäffer, 1854) and three new species: D. staudei Yakovlev & László, spec. nov. (Type locality: Zambia: Samfia, Mukushi, reg. Liubwe), D. prozorovi Yakovlev & László, spec. nov. (Type locality: Congo Belge, Congo River), and D. lenzi Yakovlev & László, spec. nov. (Type locality: Zambia: Ndole Bay, shores of the Lake Tanganyika). The new combination Davidlivingstonia boisduvalii (Herrich-Schäffer, 1854), comb. nov. is established. New records of D. boisduvalii for Benin, Burkina Faso, and Togo are provided. The article is illustrated with 25 figures of adults, male and female genitalia and distribution maps.
