Intercropping may allow increasing both the productivity and diversity of crop through efficient utilization of land in densely populated countries like Bangladesh where fertility of agricultural land is declining gradually. A field experiment was conducted at a recently developed alluvial soil in Bangladesh during 2015–16 and 2016–17 winter seasons to select suitable leafy vegetables intercropping with pumpkin for higher productivity, better land and time utilization and maximum economic return. Six leafy vegetables viz., coriander green, red amaranth, radish green, mustard green, jute green, and spinach were intercropped with pumpkin and compared with sole pumpkin using a randomised complete block design. Intercropping leafy vegetables with pumpkin did not reduce pumpkin yield but increased system productivity by 39–120% over sole cropped pumpkin. All the intercropping combinations performed better than sole pumpkin. However, the highest system yield (72.7 & 75.6 t ha–1), land equivalent ratio (1.74 & 1.75), area time equivalent ratio (1.20 & 1.16), net return (8001 & 8350 USD ha–1) and benefit cost ratio (10.3 & 10.7) were obtained in 2015–16 & 2016–17, respectively from pumpkin + spinach system indicating that this system might be suitable for higher crop productivity, better land and time utilization as well as economic return for the selected area.

By continuous and rapid growth in industrialization as well as population, the agricultural lands are also becoming less and less continuously day by day which results in increase in the population of small land holders. In addition to this, because of continuous decreasing production the youth of the villages are also migrating in big cities for the employment, resulting decreasing manpower essential to perform various seedbed operations in the villages. Hence, it is the need of time for small farmers having small agricultural land and having less crop production to introduce the cost-effective farm mechanization so that they can improve production rate. Rotavator is the best option available to achieve this landmark as it is already proved that seedbed prepared by using rotavator gives highest benefit to cost ratio. For this experimental study the whole land of 9 acre area is divided into 18 plots of equal size in area. The combination of method of seedbed preparation and use of fertilizers were the preliminary criteria. The categories of fertilizer according to quantity are discussed earlier which are 50kg, 35kg and 65kg per acre respectively. The quantities of organic fertilizer used are 45kg and 60kg per acre of agricultural land for both seedbeds which are prepared manually and by using rotavator. The highest production of Pigeon Pea was obtained of 814kg was from the plot whose seedbed is prepared by using agricultural machine called rotavator and organic fertilizer; next highest production is obtained of 802 kg from the plot whose seedbed is prepared by using rotavator and the fertilizer used was chemical fertilizer. The minimum production of Pigeon Pea which is 690 kg was obtained in the plot whose seedbed was prepared manually and chemical fertilizer was used.

ABSTRACT Maize–sweet potato intercropping often results in weed suppression and increased crop productivity. This study was designed to determine the appropriate planting time and optimal density of sweet potato in a maize-sweet potato intercropping system that will minimize weed infestation and improve yield of the component crops in a drought-prone southern Guinea savanna of Nigeria. The experiment was laid as a randomized complete block design with a split-plot arrangement and 3 replications in 2018 and 2019 growing seasons. The main plots were planting time (May, June and July) while the sub-plots consisted of 3 maize-sweet potato intercropping populations(maize at 53,333 plants/ha + 33,333 plants/ha of sweet potato, maize at 53,333 plants/ha + 66,666 plants/ha of sweet potato and maize at 53,333 plants/ha +99,999plants/ha of sweet potato), sole maize at 53,333 plants/ha and sole sweet potato at 33,333 plants/ha. The results revealed that, 7 weed species were the most prevalent and there was inconsistent effect of planting date on weed flushes while weed smothering efficiency of intercropping was between 31 to 49 % and 48 to 73% for weed density and weed biomass, respectively. Intercropping resulted in land equivalent ratios (LER) of 1.29 to 1.74 while the competitive ability of maize was increased with an increase in sweet potato density. Planting in the month of June had significantly higher tuber yield of 9.56 t/ha of sweet potato and maize grain yield of 3.28 t/ha while intercropping 33,333 plants/ha of sweet potato (1 vine of sweet potato planted at 0.40m apart on the ridge and 0.75m between ridges) and maize at 53,333 plants/ha (0.25m x 0.75m) gave an intercrop yield of 7.32 t/ha tubers and 3.46 t/ha grain yield with highest LER of 1.74, a net profit of ₦566,435.00 and benefit cost ratio of 1.44 was relatively similar to sole sweet potato. Therefore, the above intercropping pattern established in the month of June will minimize weed infestation and improve productivity of maize and sweet potato in the southern Guinea savanna of Nigeria.

The study was carried out at Multi Location Testing site, Sujanagar, Pabna during two consecutive years of 2011-12 and 2012-13 growing season to assess the performance of the pattern with newly released crop varieties against the existing one usually practiced by the farmers with traditional varieties in order to increase yield and economic return. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with six dispersed replications at farmer’s field. In improved pattern (IP) BARI Gom-26, BARI Til-4 and Binadhan-7 variety were used for wheat, sesame and T. aman rice, respectively. On the contrary in existing pattern (EP) farmers usually use BARI Gom-21, local (char shira) and Sharna cultivar for wheat, sesame and T. aman rice, respectively. The mean yield was recorded 4.66, 1.34 and 4.79 t ha-1 from wheat (BARI Gom-26), sesame (BARI Til-4) and T. aman (Binadhan-7) respectively from the improved cropping pattern whereas average yield 3.81, 0.98 and 4.58 t ha-1 was obtained from wheat (BARI Gom-21), sesame (local) and T. aman (Sharna), respectively from the existing pattern. Two years mean data also showed that improved pattern provided about 18% higher REY compared to existing pattern. Sustainable yield index and production efficiency were also found maximum with improved cropping pattern. Burirhat, Rangpur during two consecutive seasons of 2004-05 and 2005-06, respectively, to find out suitable row arrangement of carrot with groundnut for higher yield and economic return. There were six treatments, such as sole groundnut, sole carrot, one row of carrot in between two normal rows of  groundnut, two rows of carrot in between two normal rows of groundnut, two  rows of groundnut alternated with two rows of carrot and three rows of  groundnut alternated with three rows of carrot. Results showed that monoculture  produced the highest yields of individual crops but in intercropping system the  highest groundnut equivalent yield (10.63 t/h and 11.10 t/ha) was obtained from two rows of carrot in between two rows of groundnut. The maximum land  equivalent ratio (1.67 and 1.74), the highest gross return (Tk.212600/ha and  Tk. 248400/ha) and net return (Tk.184881/ha and Tk.211680) were also obtained from the intercropping treatment with two rows carrot in between two normal rows of groundnut. But due to higher cost in this treatment, maximum benefit cost ratio (7.09 and 7.01) was obtained from the intercropping treatment    with one row carrot in between two normal rows of groundnut in both the years. The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during February to June 2017 to study the feasibility of different direct seeded rice based intercropping systems under varying fertilizer management. The experiment was conducted in afactorialrandomized complete block design with three replications. Four leafy vegetables viz., gimakalmi, Indian spinach, red amaranth andjute were intercropped with dry direct seeded boro rice (cv. BRRI dhan28) following three fertilizer dose such as 100, 75 and 125% of recommended fertilizer, and sole rice was also maintained as control. Rice yield was the highest (3.87t ha-1) in sole cropping, and intercroppingresulted insignificant rice yield reduction. Although inintercropping rice yielddecreased, but increased both gross margin and benefit cost ratio (BCR) as compared to rice sole cropping. Among the vegetables, gimakalmi performed the best followed by red amaranth in terms of yield and 125% recommended fertilizer was the best fertilizer dose. Gimakalmi intercropped with rice following 125% recommended fertilizer showed the highest gross return and BCR (2.53). Therefore, vegetables like gimakalmi and red amaranth couldbe recommended as intercrop with dry direct seeded winter rice with 125% recommended fertilizer for better productivity and higher economicreturn. A field trial on soil test based (STB) fertilizer doses was conducted during the year of 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 in Jashore region (AEZ-11) to find out the most suitable fertilizer doses for four crop based cropping pattern considering the agronomic feasibility and economic return of the system. The experiment consisted of eight different treatments viz. T1: 100% NPKSZnB (STB), T2: T1 + 25% N, T3: T1 + 25% NP, T4: T1 + 25% NK, T5:T1 + 25% PK, T6:T1 + 25% NPK, T7: 75% of T1, T8: Native fertility. Randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications was followed. Data revealed that seed yield of mustard was remarkably influenced by fertilizer treatments while grain yield of other components of the cropping system was not affected significantly by the treatments except control or native fertility. It was observed that 25% more NPK over 100% STB dose provided the highest yield of all the component crops. The highest rice equivalent yield (3.34 t ha-1) was recorded from T6 and the lowest (1.88 t ha-1) from T8 treatment. Maximum gross return (Tk. 420000/ha) and marginal benefit cost ratio (4.08) were also obtained from T6 treatment. A field experiment on intercropping of okra and leafy vegetables was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur and Agricultural Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur during Kharif-I season of 2010 and 2011 to find out suitable crop combination for higher productivity and economic return. Seven treatments viz., sole okra (50 cm × 40cm), okra 100% (in row) + red-amaranth 100% (broadcast), okra 100% (in row) + red-amaranth 75% (broadcast), okra 100% (in row) + leaf amaranth 100% (broadcast), okra 100% (in row) + leaf amaranth 75% (broadcast), okra 100% (in row) + jute as patshak 100% (broadcast), okra 100% (in row) + jute as patshak 75% (broadcast) were used. Intercropping reduced okra yield but total productivity increased due to additional yield of vegetables. In both the locations, sole okra produced the highest yields (15.82 t/ha at Joydebpur and 13.79 t/ha at Burirhat). Among the intercropping treatments, the highest okra yields (15.42 t/ha at Joydebpur and 12.64 t/ha at Burirhat) were obtained from okra 100%+ red amaranth 75% combination. The lowest okra yield (13.16 t/ha at Joydebpur and 11.75 t/ha at Burirhat) was recorded in okra 100% + jute as patshak 100% combination. The highest okra equivalent yield (23.00 t/ha) was recorded in okra 100% + red amaranth 100% at Joydebpur and in okra 100% + leaf amaranth 100% (21.79 t/ha) at Burirhat. These treatment combinations also gave the highest gross margin (Tk. 227180/ha at Joydebpur and Tk. 214600/ha at Burirhat) and benefit cost ratio (5.66 at Joydebpur and 5.58 at Burirhat). The results revealed that cent percent red amaranth (broadcast) or leaf amaranth intercropped with cent percent okra might be suitable combination for higher productivity and economic return at Joydebpur and Burirhat, respectively. Changing three crops pattern to four crops can play a potential role for achieving countries food security. With this view to increase crop productivity, production efficiency, land use efficiency, and economic return through intensifying cropping intensity as well as crop diversity by transforming three crops pattern to four crops, the experiment was conducted in High Ganges River Floodplain Soils under the Agro-Ecological Zone (AEZ) 11 at Pali, Durgapur, under the Multilocation Testing Site, Puthia, Rajshahi, for two consecutive years 2014-15 and 2015-16. Four crops pattern mustard-onion/maize-T. Aman rice was tested at on-farm condition over the existing three crops pattern mustard-onion-T. Aman rice. Maize was introduced here as a relay crop with onion to fit it in the four crops pattern. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with six dispersed replications. Two-year crop cycles were completed, and data regarding component crops yield were considered for assessing the performance of the two cropping patterns for making a sense of comparing productivity. Although there was no significant difference in component crops yield between four crops and three crops pattern, as an additional crop, maize tremendously increased the system productivity and economic return of the four crops pattern. Higher rice equivalent yield 28.96 t·ha−1 in 2013-14 and 30.95 t·ha−1 in 2014-15 was recorded from the four crops pattern with a mean rice equivalent yield (REY) 29.95 t·ha−1 over the existing pattern with a mean value 21.76 t·ha−1. However, four crops pattern resulted in higher cultivation cost due to growing maize as an additional crop; nevertheless, it gave the higher gross return, marginal return, marginal benefit cost ratio, and production efficiency. The four crops pattern resulted averagely 37.63% higher production (REY) compared to the existing three crops pattern. Production as well as land use efficiency were increased by 9.33% and 19.18%, respectively, from the intensified alternate pattern.

Intercropping affords an increase in productivity by optimising the area used, as well as maximising input use efficiency the financial return of intercroping systems was higher than that observed in the respective individual cultures. Here we show prominently that the financial return of the consortium systems was higher than that observed in the respective individual cultures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the agronomic parameters, biological and productive efficiency, and economic performance of arugula under a single and intercropped system. The study was conducted at the Teaching Garden of the Federal University of Ceará, Brazil, in a randomised block design, with four replications and seven treatments: T1 (single arugula), T2 (arugula intercropped with coriander), T3 (arugula intercropped with parsley), T4 (arugula intercropped with garlic chives), T5 (single coriander), T6 (single parsley) and T7 (single garlic chives). Phytotechnical evaluations were carried out. Biological efficiency was evaluated based on the following factors: land use efficiency index or land equivalent ratio (LER), relative contribution of the arugula crop to the LER (CRC), area time equivalent ratio (RAET) and system productivity index (IPS). For the economic analysis, the following were evaluated: operational production costs (OC; BRL ha-1), gross revenue (GR; BRL ha-1), gross profit (GP; BRL ha-1), rate of return (RR; %) and profitability index (PI;%). The system based on arugula intercropped with coriander showed the best agronomic performance and biological efficiency. Productivity and economic advantage under this intercropped system were also superior to the other treatments.

Sustainable agricultural practices like agroforestry systems are being advocated to overcome various problems of farming. A young malta (Citrus sinensis) orchard (3 years old) was transformed into a fruit tree-based agroforestry system in which the performances of summer (okra and Indian spinach) and autumn (mungbean and kangkong) crops and year-round spices (ginger and turmeric) were evaluated following randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replication each and eventually compared between agroforestry systems and respective sole cropping (control) from March 2018 to February 2019 at BSMRAU field. The experimental results revealed that the yields of the associated crops deprived when grown at the closest row position from the bed of malta tree and spices. Yields of okra, Indian spinach, mungbean, kangkong, turmeric and ginger were reduced by 7.57, 6.52, 14.86, 13.26, 9.70 and 16.23%, respectively under agroforestry system as compared to control. However, malta yield was increased by 5.35% in agroforestry system than control trees. The findings also indicated that the crops in agroforestry system was less hindered by the shade effect of malta trees due to less dense canopy of young malta trees. In comparison to sole cropping system, the higher benefit-cost ratio (BCR) (2.93) and land equivalent ratio (LER) (2.83) were obtained in the studied agroforestry system that explicated higher system productivity and land uses. Notable improvement of total nitrogen and organic matter were obtained in the soil under agroforestry system. Therefore, malta-based agroforestry system can be a promising alternative to provide higher economic benefits, boosting food and nutritional security, improving soil nutrient status and utilization of land.
