Abstract This chapter describes the common features determining the suitability of insects for small- and industrial-scale farming, the main insect species currently being produced on a large scale for feed production and other potential candidate species. Natural consumption of insects by animals and which insects are suitable for which animal feed is also briefly discussed.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the major technological changes related to the implementation of large-scale cogeneration and biofuel production in the sugar and alcohol industry. The reduction of the process steam consumption, implementation of new alternatives in driving mills, the widespread practice of high steam parameters use in cogeneration facilities, the insertion of new technologies for biofuels production (hydrolysis and gasification), the energy conversion of sugarcane trash and vinasse, animal feed production, process integration and implementation of the biorefinery concept are considered. Another new paradigm consists in the wide spreading of sustainability studies of products and processes using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the implementation of sustainability indexes. Every approach to this issue has as an objective to increase the economic efficiency and the possibilities of the sugarcane as a main source of two basic raw materials: fibres and sugar. The paper briefly presents the concepts, indicators, state-of-the-art and perspectives of each of the referred issues.

The increasing demands on natural resources to provide food and feed has led to increased global initiatives to improve production sustainability and efficiency. The use of insects as an alternate source of protein for human food and production-animal feed is one such avenue gaining attention. With there being a large variety of insect species endemic to each region, there is likely to be an ideal candidate for each specific production system and region. Insects require less land and water than do terrestrial animals, have high feed-conversion efficiency (FCE) and emit low levels of greenhouse gases (GHG). Insect species currently investigated for mass production include black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), mealworms and crickets. In western societies, it is less likely that wide-scale adoption of insects as a food source will occur, although speciality products with ‘hidden’ insects, such as cricket flour, are commercially available. It is likely to be more achievable for insects to be included into the diets of production and companion animals. While there has been significant investment in research and development of large-scale insect-production systems, such facilities are yet to start producing at a significant scale. The safety and efficacy of insects as a food or feed must be established in conjunction with the development of mass rearing facilities and the optimisation of insect-rearing substrates. Insects also have nutraceutical properties that may have beneficial impacts on animal health and growth, with scope for these properties to be exploited as feed or food additives. The present review will explore the following question: ‘are insects a future livestock industry for Australia?’.

A comparison of stillage treatment options for large-scale bioethanol plants was based on the data of an existing plant producing approximately 200,000 t/yr of bioethanol and 1,400,000 t/yr of stillage. Animal feed production – the state-of-the-art technology at the plant- was compared to anaerobic digestion. The latter was simulated in two different scenarios: digestion in small-scale biogas plants in the surrounding area versus digestion in a large-scale biogas plant at the bioethanol production site. Emphasis was placed on a holistic simulation balancing chemical parameters and calculating logistic algorithms to compare the efficiency of the stillage treatment solutions. For central anaerobic digestion different digestate handling solutions were considered because of the large amount of digestate. For land application a minimum of 36,000 ha of available agricultural area would be needed and 600,000 m3 of storage volume. Secondly membrane purification of the digestate was investigated consisting of decanter, microfiltration, and reverse osmosis. As a third option aerobic wastewater treatment of the digestate was discussed. The final outcome was an economic evaluation of the three mentioned stillage treatment options, as a guide to stillage management for operators of large-scale bioethanol plants.

Extant genomes are largely shaped by the global transposition, copy number fluctuation, and rearrangement of DNA sequences, rather than by the substitutions of single nucleotides. Although many of these large-scale mutations have low probabilities and are unlikely to repeat, others are recurrent or predictable in their effects, leading to stereotyped genome architectures and genetic variation in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Such recurrent, parallel mutation modes can profoundly shape the paths taken by evolution, and directly undermine the Wright-Fisher model of evolutionary genetics. Similar patterns are also evident at the smaller scales of individual genes or short genomic sequences. The scale and extent of this ‘non-substitution’ variation has only recently come into focus through the advent of new genomic technologies; however, it still not widely included in genotype-phenotype association studies. In this review, we identify the common features of these disparate mutational phenomena and comment on the importance and interpretation of these mutational patterns.

Over the last decades, maritime history has evolved into one of the most dynamic, self-standing disciplines among Greek historical studies. The production of books and papers that probe the multilevel human interaction with the sea has been prolific, while Greek maritime historians exhibit an ever-growing presence in the international fora. This paper argues that the roots of this unprecedented boom lie in a series of large-scale research projects funded both by international and national agencies. It underlines the common features of these schemes that formulated a methodology, or rather a ‘school’ of maritime history, and introduces to a wider audience the most significant projects that are currently underway.

The creation of small communities has been proposed as a way of enhancing the educational experience of students at large institutions. Using data from a survey of students living in large and small residences at a public research university, this study does not support the common assumption that small-scale social environments are more conducive to positive community life than large-scale social environments.
