Intensive culture of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus in North Vietnam.
Keyword(s):
Abstract Trials carried out with farmers on intensive culture of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in monoculture in ponds in north Vietnam indicated that tilapia could reach an average weight of 500 g after 6 months, with productivity up to 20 t ha-1 per 6-month cycle. The net income per ha of pond was VND 60,000,000 (about USD 4,000). Floating extruded feed with 26-28% protein was used when fish were smaller than 300 g, and 18% protein when fish were larger than 300 g. The culture season for tilapia is 7-8 months from April to the middle of November. Overwintered fingerlings are the best seed to stock early in the season in April-May.
