Native fish persistence is threatened by the establishment and spread of nonnatives. Identifying environmental and biotic factors associated with the success of co-occurring native fishes and nonnative taxa is central to identifying mechanisms responsible for native declines and nonnative expansion. We related physicochemical variables, food resources, and community composition to the success (secondary production) of native and nonnative fishes, tadpoles, and crayfish across six sites in three reaches (tributary, canyon, and valley) during 2008–2011 in the Gila River, New Mexico. Native fish success was greater than nonnative success across a range of physicochemical conditions, basal resource supply rates, and nonnative communities, although nonnative fish, tadpole, and crayfish success could approach or exceed that of native fishes in canyon habitats, a warm-water tributary, or in downstream valley sites, respectively. Native fish success was lowest in canyon reaches, when flathead catfish (Pylodictis olivaris) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) were highly productive. These results demonstrate the potential for native fish persistence in the presence of nonnatives in physically unmodified streams, highlighting the importance of habitat preservation for native conservation.

This chapter provides an introduction to various applications of correlative approaches used in ecological niche modeling, along with the theoretical principles on which the applications are based. It demonstrates how the methods can be applied to interesting challenges to yield highly useful results, provided that the researcher understands exactly what is being estimated based on which data. It also gives examples of types of model predictions that can yield useful information. Each of the following chapters describes key questions that the niche models address, for example, where unknown populations are likely to be present, or which areas are most susceptible to nonnative species invasions. Practical considerations for implementing each application are also taken into account, and future directions and challenges are discussed.

Environment degradation in Rawa Pening’s lake is caused of descend lake’s functions for some potentions and activities around the lake. Some problems in the Rawa Pening’s lake has emerged i.e : decrease water quality of lake, abundance of water hyacinth growth and increase sediment in the bottom lake. A research about infl uences of land ecosystem on Panjang and Galeh river corridors for Rawa Pening’s lake has been done. Two rivers named Galeh and Panjang are the largest water contribution in Rawa Pening’s lake. That caused the land characteristic ecosystem of that river corridors gives infl uences in the Rawa Pening’s lake.Key words: land ecosystem, river corridor, water contribution, Rawa Pening Lake.

Abstract Satellite data from Landsats 4 and 5 were utilized to delineate the seasonal variations of sediment transport zones in the Lac Saint-Pierre region of the St. Lawrence River corridor. A seasonally cyclic succession of patterns displaying persistent, mutually independent, and extensive (in both space and time) turbidity zones was clearly in evidence. Visible and thermal data in both imagery and digital formats were used to show the close relationships existing among the distinct zonal synoptic patterns, the bathymetry of lake and river, and the near surface aquatic temperatures.

AbstractThe knowledge of biotic and abiotic drivers that put non-native invasive fishes at a disadvantage to native ones is necessary for suppressing invasions, but the knowledge is scarce, particularly when abiotic changes are fast. In this study, we increased this knowledge by an analysis of the biomass of most harmful Prussian carp Carassius gibelio in a river reviving from biological degradation. The species' invasion followed by the invasion's reversal occurred over only two decades and were documented by frequent monitoring of fish biomass and water quality. An initial moderate improvement in water quality was an environmental filter that enabled Prussian carp’s invasion but prevented the expansion of other species. A later substantial improvement stimulated native species’ colonization of the river, and made one rheophil, ide Leuciscus idus, a significant Prussian carp’s replacer. The redundancy analysis (RDA) of the dependence of changes in the biomass of fish species on water quality factors indicated that Prussian carp and ide responded in a significantly opposite way to changes in water quality in the river over the study period. However, the dependence of Prussian carp biomass on ide biomass, as indicated by regression analysis and analysis of species traits, suggests that the ecomorphological similarity of both species might have produced interference competition that contributed to Prussian carp’s decline.
