Abstract A new model for calculation of circulation in shallow water basins is created based on the shallow water equations taking into account the Coriolis force and quadratic friction on the bottom. Wind effects are taken into account as forcing. The main feature of the model is a new numerical method based on regularized shallow water equations allowing one to construct the simple and sufficiently accurate numerical algorithms possessing a number of advantages over existing methods. The paper provides a detailed description of all construction steps of the model. The developed model was implemented for the water area of the Azov Sea. The paper presents the modelling of extreme surges in March 2013 and September 2014, the results of calculations are compared with observation data of hydrometeorological stations in Taganrog and Yeysk.

In a homoclinic bifurcation to infinity, a limit cycle blows up to infinite amplitude and disappears. Based on linearizations at infinity, we argue that this bifurcation occurs in models of the Kondratieff economic long wave. A formal proof of the existence of stable and unstable manifolds at infinity is given. A numerical method is proposed and applied to a new model in which regulation of consumer goods production is taken into account. The economic implications of the analysis are discussed.

Vibratory roller compaction is a well-known method in improving the mechanical properties of field rockfills. However, the meso mechanism of rockfill densification under vibratory roller compaction has not been understood clearly. This paper presents a discrete numerical method to simulate the vibratory roller compaction of field rockfills. Firstly, rockfill particles were modeled by irregular and stochastic clusters, which can be breakable. In addition, the segregation of field rockfills was replicated in a practical manner. Then, a new model of the vibratory roller was presented, in which the frame inertia was considered. Finally, the developed method was applied to simulate the vibratory roller compaction of field rockfills in the Shui Buya Project. Results show that (1) the numerical simulations of vibratory roller compaction of field rockfills agree well with the field experiments; thus, the feasibility and rationality of the developed simulation method are verified; (2) the dynamic response of field rockfills under vibratory roller compaction can be predicted by the presented numerical method with calibrated model and parameters; (3) the new roller model with frame inertia considered is much more accurate than the roller models in early studies. Thus, the developed discrete numerical method can be further adopted to explore the meso mechanism of rockfill densification under vibratory roller compaction in the future.

Stochastic dependence among cognitive processes can be modeled in different ways, and the family of multinomial processing tree models provides a flexible framework for analyzing stochastic dependence among discrete cognitive states. This article presents a multinomial model of multidimensional source recognition that specifies stochastic dependence by a parameter for the joint retrieval of multiple source attributes together with parameters for stochastically independent retrieval. The new model is equivalent to a previous multinomial model of multidimensional source memory for a subset of the parameter space. An empirical application illustrates the advantages of the new multinomial model of joint source recognition. The new model allows for a direct comparison of joint source retrieval across conditions, it avoids statistical problems due to inflated confidence intervals and does not imply a conceptual imbalance between source dimensions. Model selection criteria that take model complexity into account corroborate the new model of joint source recognition.
