The present research addressed the question: "Is there a relationship between individual differences in aptitude for processing musical information and individual differences in aptitude for processing linguistic information?" An extensive exploration of linguistic and musical theory, aptitude studies, and the literature on the processing of language and music, led the author to believe that a relationship between linguistic and musical forms of aptitude could be found in aspects of working memory. Four tests were designed to measure an individual's working memory spans for linguistic and musical processing. The results of 70 participants from a secondary school on these tests and on a French listening examination were compared. Significant correlations were indeed found between the scores on these five measures. Furthermore, the complexity of the information to be processed, the musical experience of the participants and other factors were found to have an effect on correlations. Especially at higher levels of processing, musical and linguistic processing capacity seem to be associated. No definitive conclusions could be drawn, among other thing because of the 1OW reliability of two of the tests, but the results do encourage further research into this relatively new area in second language acquisition.

Abstract. Playing a musical instrument professionally has been shown to lead to structural and functional neural adaptations, making musicians valuable subjects for neuroplasticity research. Here, we follow the hypothesis that specific musical demands further shape neural processing. To test this assumption, we subjected groups of professional drummers, professional woodwind players, and nonmusicians to pure tone sequences and drum sequences in which infrequent anticipations of tones or drum beats had been inserted. Passively listening to these sequences elicited a mismatch negativity to the temporally deviant stimuli which was greater in the musicians for tone series and particularly large for drummers for drum sequences. In active listening conditions drummers more accurately and more quickly detected temporally deviant stimuli.

Considering the advantages of trapezoid fuzzy two-dimensional linguistic variables (TrF2DLVs), which can not only accurately describe the qualitative evaluation but also use qualitative linguistic variables (LVs) to describe the confidence level of this evaluation in the second dimension, this paper proposes a novel method based on trapezoidal fuzzy two-dimensional linguistic information to solve multiple attribute decision-making (MADM) problems with unknown attribute weight. First, a combination weight model is constructed, which covers a subjective weight determination model based on the proposed trapezoidal fuzzy two-dimensional linguistic best-worst method (TrF2DL-BWM) and an objective weight determination model based on the proposed CRITIC method. Then, in order to accurately rank the alternatives, an extended VIKOR-QUALIFLEX method is proposed, which can measure the concordance index of each ranking combination by means of group utility and individual maximum regret value of each evaluation alternative. Finally, a practical problem of lean management assessment for industrial residential projects is solved by the proposed method, and the effectiveness and advantages of the method are demonstrated by comparative analysis and discussion.
