Comparing Pansexual- and Bisexual-Identified Participants on Demographics, Psychological Well-Being, and Political Ideology in a New Zealand National Sample

Background: Solo—being intentionally solitary in nature—is receiving growing attention as a valuable outdoor education program component. Its practice and history have been researched in the context of experiential learning, but few studies have explicitly examined how solo experiences can affect dimensions of well-being. This study investigated a broad range of well-being pathways provided by being solo, based on data from Norway, Germany, and New Zealand. Methods: Using qualitative content analysis (QCA), the solo debrief responses of 40 participants (26 females, age: 19–64 years) were analysed, applying the PERMA-V framework (emotions, engagement, relationship, meaning, achievement, and vitality). Variations in the reports were explored as a function of the national sample, gender, age, prior solo experiences and expectations. Results: The study suggests that hedonic and eudemonic well-being pathways, represented by the six PERMA-V pillars, interrelate strongly. The experience of a range of positive emotions and connecting process during solo highlights two of the most frequent findings related to well-being pathways. The secondary findings suggest minor variations in the well-being pathways for the different national samples, gender and age. Expectations and prior experiences with solo were identified as context factors with minor impact. Further, the data-driven analysis identified specific physical activities, landscape features, sense-activation, perception of time and ‘good’ weather as relevant to the specific experience. Conclusions: Solo experiences provide for well-being-related pathways in a multitude of ways, which highlights the well-being potential of solo implementation across practical fields beyond outdoor education, such as wilderness therapy, and environmental and planetary health initiatives. Future studies should continue to explore solo’s well-being potential in different settings, especially in the context of non-Western samples.

BACKGROUND Many face-to-face and digital therapeutic supports are designed for adolescents experiencing high levels of psychological distress. However, promoting psychological well-being among adolescents is often neglected despite significant short-term and long-term benefits. OBJECTIVE This research has 3 main objectives: (1) to assess the acceptability of Match Emoji, a casual video game with psychological well-being concepts among 13-15-year-olds in a New Zealand secondary school (2) to identify the feasibility of the research process (3) to explore the preliminary well-being and therapeutic potential of Match Emoji. METHODS Approximately 40 participants aged 13–15-years from a local secondary college in Wellington, New Zealand will be invited to download and play Match Emoji 3-4 times a week for 5-15 minutes over a 2-week period. Participants will complete 4 assessments at baseline, post intervention and 3 weeks later to assess psychological well-being and therapeutic changes. Statistical analysis will be used to synthesize data from interviews and triangulated with assessment changes and game analytics. This synthesis will help to assess the acceptability and feasibility of the Match Emoji. RESULTS The key outputs from the project will include the acceptability, feasibility, and therapeutic potential of Match Emoji. CONCLUSIONS Data from the study is expected to inform future research on Match Emoji including a randomized control trial and further adjustments to the design and development of the game. CLINICALTRIAL This study received ethics approval from the New Zealand Health and Disability Ethics Committee (21/NTA/34) on the 28th of May 2021

Abstract Racial minorities and educationally disadvantaged experienced more housing loss, unemployment, and financial strain during the 2007-2009 Great Recession. These hardships may heighten stress and amplify persistent and growing health inequities, which were further worsened by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. It is therefore essential to identify factors that contribute to individual differences in vulnerability so that more effective interventions can be implemented, especially in older adult populations who may face unique economic hardships tied to age discrimination. According to the reserve capacity model, higher levels of psychosocial resources, including psychological well-being, can protect against the negative health outcomes related to heightened stress exposure. This study tested the intersections between recession hardship, pre-existing vulnerability defined as racial and educational disadvantage, and psychological well-being as predictors of biological indicators of chronic allostatic load. Chronic allostatic load was assessed with cardiovascular reactivity and recovery to acute mental stress and systemic inflammation (basal indicators of C-reactive protein and interleukin 6). Biological data came from a national sample of adults known as the Midlife in the US Study ( MIDUS; age = 25-75, N=863) that completed assessments after the recession. Multiple regression models revealed that more widespread recession hardship predicted greater biological dysregulation. Tests of three-way interactions revealed that the association between recession hardship and biological dysregulation was strongest among respondents with combined disadvantages of low educational status and low levels of psychological well-being. This study connected a major economic event to individual variation in health vulnerability and identified potential biological pathways to future disease outcomes.
