Do cyanobacterial blooms alter community structure of cladoceran zooplankton?

Abstract Toxic cyanobacterial blooms frequently develop in eutrophic freshwater bodies worldwide. Microcystis species produce microcystins (MCs) as a cyanotoxin. Certain bacteria that harbor the mlr gene cluster, especially mlrA, are capable of degrading MCs. However, MCs-degrading bacteria may possess or lack mlr genes (mlr+ and mlr− genotypes, respectively). In this study we investigated the genotype that predominantly contributes to biodegradation and cyanobacterial predator community structure with change in total MCs concentration in an aquatic environment. The two genotypes co-existed but mlr+ predominated, as indicated by the negative correlation between mlrA gene copy abundance and total MCs concentration. At the highest MCs concentrations, predation pressure by Phyllopoda, Copepoda, and Monogononta (rotifers) was reduced; thus, MCs may be toxic to cyanobacterial predators. The results suggest cooperation between MCs-degrading bacteria and predators may reduce Microcystis abundance and MCs concentration.

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms pose a risk to human health worldwide. To enhance understanding on the bloom-forming mechanism, the spatiotemporal changes in cyanobacterial diversity and composition in two eutrophic lakes (Erhai Lake and Lushui Reservoir) of China were investigated from 2010 to 2011 by high-throughput sequencing of environmental DNA. For each sample, 118 to 260 cpcBA-IGS operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were obtained. Fifty-two abundant OTUs were identified, which made up 95.2% of the total sequences and were clustered into nine cyanobacterial groups. Although the cyanobacterial communities of both lakes were mainly dominated by Microcystis, Erhai Lake had a higher cyanobacterial diversity. The abundance of mixed Nostocales species was lower than that of Microcystis, whereas Phormidium and Synechococcus were opportunistically dominant. The correlation between the occurrence frequency and relative abundance of OTUs was poorly fitted by the Sloan neutral model. Deterministic processes such as phosphorus availability were shown to have significant effects on the cyanobacterial community structure in Erhai Lake. In summary, the Microcystis-dominated cyanobacterial community was mainly affected by the deterministic process. Opportunistically dominant species have the potential to replace Microcystis and form blooms in eutrophic lakes, indicating the necessity to monitor these species for drinking water safety.

Microcystin (MC), a hepatotoxin that is associated with cyanobacterial blooms in freshwater lakes, threatens the quality of drinking water resources. Biodegradation of MC using biofiltration is emerging as a cost-effective solution for drinking water treatment. This study reports isolation of five MC-degrading microbial consortia and investigation of their community structure and kinetics in the presence or absence of a readily-bioavailable organic carbon source. The results indicated that the presence of a bioavailable organic carbon source caused: (1) the proliferation of community members previously unobserved in each consortium cultured without ethanol; (2) a shift in abundance of representative taxa; (3) a fluctuation in genera affiliated with MC-biodegradation; and, (4) a unique response in simulated diversity among consortia. These changes to each microbial consortium were paralleled by a significant decline in MC degradation kinetics. Overall, this study highlights the importance of integrating environmental conditions into the design and operation of biofiltration systems for MC biodegradation.

The 2011–2012 data on the hydrochemical mode of the transboundary River Viliya (Neris) and two of its tributaries in the territory of the Republic of Belarus and on structure of the phytoplankton community therein are presented. High phytoplankton biomass was determined in the summer period. For the first time, the presence of microcystin synthase genes (mcyE) was detected in the River Viliya (Neris), and four variants of microcystins were determined employing the MALDI-TOF method. Similarities in the species composition (including toxic species) of cyanobacteria from the River Viliya (Neris) and from the Curonian Lagoon of the Baltic Sea were noted. It can be assumed that the phytoplankton community structure of rivers can influence algal community formation in the downstream areas as well as in the coastal estuarine lagoons that eventually receive water from these rivers.

Bulang districts Batam Islands of  Riau province (Riau Islands), its consists of many islands with as well as having the potential diversity of coastal marine life in particular kinds of macro algae or seaweed. Conducted research aimed to determine the structure of macro- algal communities in the intertidal zone islands. The results of the identification of algal species found 16 species are: the Order of Chlorophyceae as 6 spesies; Order Phaeophyceae as 2 spesies; and Order Rhodophyceae as 8 spesies. The community structure at the five stations showed the highest values were found in the island of dominance Cicir (D ' = 0.79) , uniformity index values on Tengah Island (E ' = 0.99) , while the island Balak had the highest diversity index (H ' = 0.88) , with the abundance patterns of population structure on the island is pretty good Central . Results of correlation analysis of regression between IVI types of algae with the conditions of environmental quality suggests that there is a significance (Fhit ˃ F table and the value of r = > 90 %) between IVI algae Halimeda sp and Cryptarachne polyglandulosa at each station with a temperature parameter surface (⁰C) , depth temperature (⁰C) and pH values. Keywords : Algae, Community Structure, Important Value Index.
