Cobalt(II) and zinc(II) complexes of ethyl carbazate (ECZ), [Co(ECZ)3](NO3)2 and [Zn(ECZ)3] (NO3)2, were synthesized. Single crystals of these two compounds were grown from aqueous solutions using a slow evaporation method. Their structures have been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Both of them are monoclinic with space group P21/n. The complexes are further characterized by element analysis and IR measurements. Their thermal stabilities are studied by using TG-DTG, DSC techniques. When heated to 350 °C, only metal oxide was left for both complexes.

A novel complex has been prepared using the (E)-4-nitro-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethylidene)aniline bidentate Schiff base ligand and PtCl2, namely, dichlorido[(E)-4-nitro-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethylidene)aniline-κ2 N,N′]platinum(II) acetonitrile hemisolvate, [PtCl2(C12H9N3O2)]·0.5CH3CN, 1. According to the X-ray measurements of the crystal structure, the PtII ion adopts a PtCl2N2 square-planar coordination. The coordination of the Schiff base ligand to the PtII ion occurs in a cyclic bidentate fashion, as a result of which a five-membered metallacycle is formed. Furthermore, in the structure of 1, the neutral molecules form a one-dimensional chain structure through C—H...Cl and C—H...O hydrogen bonds. The characterization of the complex was performed via single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis, and the antioxidant activity of the complex was evaluated using spectrophotometry by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method.

A aroylhydrazone Schiff-base ligand (1, 4-Bis(2’-formylphenyl)-1,4-dioxabutane isonicotinoylhydrazone) and its Zn (II) complex were synthesized by hydrothermal method. The ligand was characterized by IR spectrum, MS spectrum and X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis. The luminescent properties of the ligand and Zn (II) complex material have been investigated in solid and in organic solvents. The results show that the ligand has strong luminescent emission at ca. 454 nm and the fluorescence of Zn (II) complex is very weak.

Two homochiral coordination polymers based on a chiral reduced Schiff base ligand, namely poly[(μ5-4-{[(NR,1S)-(1-carboxylato-2-phenylethyl)amino]methyl}benzoato)zinc(II)], [Zn(C17H15NO4)]n, (1), and poly[(μ5-4-{[(NR,1S)-(1-carboxylato-2-phenylethyl)amino]methyl}benzoato)cobalt(II)], [Co(C17H15NO4)]n, (2), have been obtained by hydrothermal methods and studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analyses, powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, IR spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. Compounds (1) and (2) are isostructural and crystallize in theP212121space group. Both display a three-dimensional network structure with a one-dimensional channel, with the benzyl group of the ligand directed towards the channel. An investigation of photoluminescence properties shows that compound (1) displays a strong emission in the purple region.

The syntheses and structure investigations of four new 3d transition metal complexes (1–4) with a flexible N4O2-donor hexadentate Schiff-base ligand are described; three complexes (1, 2, and 4) of FeIII, CoIII, and CuII metal ions have been investigated by UV-vis, FT-IR, high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS), and scanning electron microscopy–electron dispersive spectroscopy, as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction. The X-ray structure of NiII complex 3 is also reported. The molecular structures of the complexes (1–3) demonstrate distorted octahedral coordination geometry, each exhibiting 1 : 1 (M : L) ratios and the CuII complex 4 shows a trinuclear structure with a CuII : L ratio of 3 : 2 in the solid state, which has been proven by X-ray diffraction. On the other hand, a mononuclear species of the CuII complex is formed in solution, which has been identified by electrospray ionization HR-MS.

The crystal structure of the binuclear copper(II) complex. [Cu2(L)(2-pyridonato)] was determined by X-ray diffraction, where H3(L) represents the Schiff base ligand derived from 1,3-diaminopropane-2-ol and acetylacetone. Two copper(II) ions are bridged by alkoxide and 2-pyridonate groups with a Cu-Cu separation of 3.249(2) Å . Ferromagnetic interaction is found to be operating in this complex, which is attributed to the small dihedral angle (121°) between the two planes containing the copper(II) ion.
