SummarySubject and purpose of work: The article explores the issue of protected areas in the Podlaskie Province with particular reference to Natura 2000 areas. Its purpose is to investigate the familiarity of those areas as well as the perception of their attractiveness among the inhabitants of the Podlaskie Province.Materials and methods: Surveys conducted in the study involved 275 adult inhabitants of the Podlaskie Province. The selection of the research sample was accidental.Results: The meaning of the Natura 2000 concept was widely known among the respondents. These areas were considered to be attractive to tourists and quite often visited by the respondents. The most popular were the Bialowieza, Augustow and Knyszyn Forests. Hiking, cycling and canoeing were held most often in those areasConclusions: Natura 2000 areas in the Podlasie Province constitute a valuable and popular tourist destination. What they need is proper tourism organization so as to give visitors an opportunity to get acquainted with their most important values, as well as ensure sustainable tourism and area protection.

Many human-shaped landscapes support viable amphibian populations due to the habitats created and/or maintained as a consequence of human actions. The challenges and approaches required to achieve the persistence of amphibians in human-shaped landscapes are markedly different from approaches commonly applied in protected areas. Contrary to protected areas or natural landscapes where amphibian conservationists can have direct control over management, in human-shaped landscapes, management options are best approached through understanding local communities’ values and socio-economic aspirations. However, consideration of the social aspects of amphibian conservation are vastly under-represented in the amphibian conservation literature. We propose that amphibian conservationists should: (i) assess the controllability of their mitigation actions for achieving long-term sustainability, (ii) understand the values and attitudes of individual landowners towards amphibians and amphibian-friendly management (local scale) and land stewardship on which amphibian conservation initiatives can be built (landscape scale), and (iii) understand the social and economic drivers of land-use change operating at regional levels, which is crucial for building adaptive potential in conservation programs. Since targeted amphibian conservation initiatives are limited in many human-shaped landscapes, consideration of the socio-economic context conducive to amphibian persistence is crucial.

Qual é o papel do Turismo sustentável e do Ecoturismo nas áreas protegidas? Quais devem ser os preparativos para eventos de grande porte como a Copa do Mundo e os Jogos Olímpicos? Como a Biologia da Conservação pode contribuir para o manejo do Turismo ambiental? Para lidar com essas questões, alguns importantes aspectos da Biologia da Conservação são global e regionalmente contextualizados. São discutidos os conceitos de “biodiversidade”, “espécies comuns e raras”, “população mínima viável”, a necessidade de grandes espaços naturais para alguns organismos, bem como outros aspectos que levam a Conservação da Natureza a ser uma das questões mais importantes para a humanidade nos dias de hoje. The conservation of natural areas and the Ecotourism The role of sustainable tourism and ecotourism in protected areas will become of increased importance for the preparation of upcoming events like the Football World Cup and Olympic Games. Therefore, specific understanding of Conservation Biology should contribute to the management of environmental tourism. To address these issues, some important aspects of Conservation Biology in global and regional scales are contextualized. This paper discusses the concepts of “biodiversity”, “common and rare species”, “minimum viable population”, the need for large natural areas for some organisms, as well as other aspects that make Conservation of Nature one of the most important issues for humanity today. A presente análise objetivou avaliar as ações de planejamento e gestão do Turismo em áreas naturais protegidas da Região Metropolitana da Baixada Santista (RMBS) no Estado de São Paulo (Brasil), identificando em que nível estas ações foram influenciadas por conceitos e métodos propostos em dois programas mundiais da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU): os Objetivos do Desenvolvimento do Milênio (ODM) e a Convenção sobre Diversidade Biológica (CDB). Enquanto a CDB já é amplamente difundida em programas de manejo e gestão do Turismo em áreas protegidas no Brasil, os ODM tiveram pouca penetração nesta temática. Subdivididos em oito metas globais, quatro delas têm amplo potencial para contribuir na elaboração de novas metodologias na gestão do Turismo em áreas naturais protegidas: o ODM 01 (redução da fome e da miséria); o ODM 03 (promoção da igualdade de gênero); o ODM 07 (respeito ao meio ambiente) e o ODM 08 (estabelecimento de parcerias para o desenvolvimento sustentável). Como resultado, a pesquisa demonstrou haver influência apenas indireta das metodologias propostas pelos ODM no que tange ao planejamento e gestão de atividades turísticas sustentáveis nas áreas naturais protegidas da RMBS, enquanto a influência da CDB foi facilmente identificável nas políticas e ações de planejamento e gestão do Turismo. Foram alcançadas algumas conclusões, como por exemplo, a de que os ODM passaram por uma clara adaptação ao contexto brasileiro por meio de políticas públicas, preferencialmente com relação ao ODM 01 (redução da pobreza). Quanto ao ODM 07, no qual o Turismo Sustentável insere-se como atividade econômica a ser incentivada na elevação do nível de renda das populações locais e em prol da conservação ambiental, este carece fortemente de políticas públicas assertivas. Sendo colocado pela ONU como primordial para o sucesso dos ODM em países em desenvolvimento, o Turismo Sustentável com base nos ODM e na CDB pode proporcionar significativos ganhos a áreas como a RMBS, permeada por complexas configurações urbanas, ambientais e sociais. Influence of global programs on the sustainability of tourism in protected areas of the metropolitan area of Baixada Santista (SP, Brazil) ABSTRACT This analysis aims to evaluate the action planning and management of tourism in protected natural areas of the Santos Metropolitan Region (RMBS) in the State of São Paulo (Brazil), whilst identifying at what level these actions were influenced by concepts and methods proposed in two global programs of the United Nations (UN): the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). While the CBD is already widespread in management programs and management of tourism in protected areas in Brazil, the MDGs have had little penetration on this theme. Subdivided into eight global goals, four of them have vast potential to contribute to the development of new methodologies in the management of tourism in protected natural areas: the ODM 01 (reducing hunger and poverty); MDG 03 (promoting gender equality); MDG 07 (respect for the environment) and the MDGs 08 (establishment of partnerships for sustainable development). As a result, the survey showed that there was only indirect influence of methodologies proposed by the MDGs with regards to planning and management of sustainable tourism activities in protected natural areas of RMBS. While the influence of the CBD was easily identifiable in policy and action planning and tourism management, some conclusions were reached, including the MDGs passing by a clear adaptation to the Brazilian context through public policies, preferably in relation to the MDGs 01 (poverty reduction). As for the MDGs 07, in which Sustainable Tourism is inserted as an economic activity to be encouraged in raising the income level of local populations while conserving the environment, this strongly lacks assertive public policy. It has been placed by the UN as paramount to the success of the MDGs in developing countries Sustainable Tourism based on the MDGs and the CBD can provide significant gains in areas such as RMBS, permeated by complex urban, environmental and social settings. Tourism in protected natural areas is one of the main economic drivers of rural economies in Europe, and Spain is the European country with the highest number of protected areas awarded as sustainable destinations by the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas. The involvement of both local businesses and tourists is vital to the effective management of sustainable tourism, and social media is increasingly becoming a relevant tool to this task. Taking these considerations into account, this chapter has two goals: first is to examine the online activities performed by tourists in Facebook pages of local tourist businesses, aiming to enhance customer engagement with sustainable tourism; second is to perform a comparative analysis on the impact and degree of engagement achieved of firms from different Spanish regions. Findings will contribute significantly to our understanding of the influence of social media in fostering citizen engagement with sustainable tourism.

Despite considerable interest by Australian farmers in precision agriculture (PA), its uptake has been low. Analysis of the possible financial benefits of alternative management options that are based on the underlying patterns of observed spatial and temporal yield variability in a paddock could increase farmer confidence in adopting PA. The cost and difficulty in collecting harvester yield maps have meant that spatial yield data are generally not available in Australia. This study proposes a simple, economical and easy to use approach to generate simulated yield maps by using paddock-specific relationships between satellite normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the farmer’s average paddock yield records. The concept behind the approach is illustrated using a limited dataset. For each of 12 paddocks in a property where a farmer’s paddock-level yield data were available for 3–5 years, the paddock-level yields showed a close to linear relationship with paddock-level NDVI across seasons. This estimated linear relationship for each paddock was used to simulate mean yields for the paddock at the subpaddock level at which NDVI data were available. For one paddock of 167 ha, for which 4 years of harvester yield data and 6 years of NDVI data were available, the map of simulated mean yield was compared with the map of harvester mean yield. The difference between the two maps, expressed as percentage deviation from the observed mean yield, was <20% for 63% of the paddock and <40% for 78% of the paddock area. For 3 seasons when there were both harvester yield data and NDVI data, the individual season simulated yields were within 30% of the observed yields for over 70% of the paddock area in 2 of the seasons, which is comparable with spatial crop modelling results reported elsewhere. For the third season, simulated yields were within 30% of the observed yield in only 22% of the paddock, but poor seasonal conditions meant that 40% of the paddock yielded <100 kg/ha. To illustrate the type of financial analysis of alternative management options that could be undertaken using the simulated yield data, a simple economic analysis comparing uniform v. variable rate nitrogen fertiliser is reported. This indicated that the benefits of using variable rate technology varied considerably between paddocks, depending on the degree of spatial yield variability. The proposed simulated yield mapping requires greater validation with larger datasets and a wider range of sites, but potentially offers growers and land managers a rapid and cost-effective tool for the initial estimation of subpaddock yield variability. Such maps could provide growers with the information necessary to carry out on-farm testing of the potential benefits of using variable applications of agronomic inputs, and to evaluate the financial benefits of greater investment in PA technology.
