The topic of this article is up-to-date due to the fact that the problems of adequate Russian interpretation of My Daghestan book by Rasul Gamzatov are not completely solved yet. Moreover, the urgency of further solvation of this problem is complicated by the fact that all translations of this book into other languages are done on the basis of its Russian version. Thus all the flops in the Russian interpretation are kept in the translations into other languages as well. The main objective of the article is to claim attention to the importance of original ethnic context for proper reflection of the cultural peculiarities. The source for research is taken from My Daghestan book by R. Gamzatov in the original (Avar), as well as from its Russian interpretation done by V. Soloukhin. The main approach in the research is the method of comparative analysis of the original text and its interpretation. The given research results in the conclusion that lack of ethnic cultural knowledge of the Avar language world picture as well as the differences between ethnic and cultural values led to some certain mistakes in Russian interpretation of the text. In some cases the interpreter doesnt perform literary images corresponding to the original and to Daghestan mentality, instead leading to lack of original artistic and emotional impressions in the translation. The interpreter has also some difficulties with transmission of the original text by Rasul Gamzatov from one linguistic and cultural sphere into other, not though on the reason that it is unknown, but because it is strange for him. We should admit that while interpreting the text it is inevitable for the interpreter to use some of his individual thinking. But the best adequate interpretation needs maximum keeping to the characteristic features of the original. The individualism of the interpreter must not interfere.

At present, the official business style of the Yakut language is more developed in comparison with the translations of the twentieth century, when this style was just beginning to be practiced. Along with this, the translation of official-business style texts is also developing. As state and municipal services are an integral part of our life and understanding the strengths and merits, which adds the translation to society, it is very important to translate the Yakut language information, regulatory documents of the population of our Republic and members of the institutions, namely the Standard of applicants to the State autonomous institution Multifunctional center for the provision of state and municipal services in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Rules of applicants. The aim of this work is to analyze the difficulties of transmission clich official-business style of Russian into Yakut language and the search approach solutions to these difficulties. The methodological basis of this study is the comparative and descriptive methods based on the data obtained by the continuous sampling method. As a result of the analysis, we identified lexical and grammatical difficulties in translating official-business style cliches from Russian into Yakut. Lexical words include borrowing words, words without equivalent correspondence and abbreviations in the cliche, where the first ones are most often transmitted to the Yakut language by transcription or remain by themselves, the second ones are translated by an adequate replacement, paraphrasing or description, and the third ones with the Russian version in a bracket. Grammatical difficulties include complex sentences with passive constructions and participial turns, which directly affect how the cliche will be translated into them. Cliches in complex sentences occur frequently, sometimes several times in the same sentence.

Andrey A. Winius (1641–1716) was born in Moscow in the family of Andrey D. Winius (1605–1662), Dutch merchant and manufacturer who lived in Russia from 1632 until his death. Winius junior was a high-ranking statesman who contributed a lot to Peter the Great’s reforms, which made Russia a Europe-oriented power. In 1674 he translated Vondel’s Vorsteliicke warande der dieren (1617) into Russian, supplementing this collection of fables with several texts from the Theatrum Morum by Aegidius Sadeler (1608). The Russian text, entitled The Theatre of Human Life, was distributed in handwritten form. In 1712, The Theatre was published in Moscow. In this article we analyze the Russian version of four fables in order to identify similarities with the sources and the changes Winius made. Besides shortening the original, he also sometimes supplemented the fables with his own moralistic thoughts. In these additions he urged readers to live honestly, respect each other, and not drink too much alcohol. In this way he tried to transfer humanistic ethical values that were common in Western Europe to the Russian society of the 17th century.

Abstract. It has been just for more than thirty years that the English-language version of the detachable structural-morphological globe of the Earth with 40 cm diameter produced by the Cartographia Enterprise won the prize of the best demonstration aid (Anson and Gutsell 1989) at the Budapest conference of the International Cartographic Association in August 1989. This success was the result of the cooperation between two education institutions (Kossuth Lajos University and Eötvös Loránd University /ELTE/) and two Hungarian firms (Cartographia Enterprise and School Equipment Producing and Marketing Company). This unique product has been the only thematic earth globe designed and published in Hungary and which was duplicated in a relatively large number. It is a rarity today. This is one of the reasons why this globe has been placed in the Virtual Globes Museum (VGM) (http://terkeptar.elte.hu/vgm). This paper gives an overview of the history of these thematic globes: the Hungarian versions made in 1986 (VGM ID 8, 9, 10) and the English versions published in 1988 (VGM ID 66, 67, 68). It introduces the immediate scientific antecedents of their birth and – being a demonstration aid – the process of publishing. The paper also presents the work with the Russian version of the globe carried out at the Institute of Cartography and Geoinformatics, ELTE (VGM ID 154, 155, 156). This will lead to the expansion of the number of globes in the VGM. The close relationship between the new product and the former two editions is also pointed out.

Introduction. Levels of alexithymia and psychosocial adaptation can influence on the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with substance use disorders. The investigation of the state of the adaptation system is often used to examine these patients, despite its complexity and multilevel character. It is still unclear what characteristics of psychosocial adaptation may indicate increasing level of alexithymia. Therefore the aim of this study is to investigate their association for future prediction of alexithymia level in men with substance use disorders. Methods. We examined 28 men who took the treatment at the detoxication therapy stage. We studied severity of alexithymia by Russian version of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale and analyzed peculiarities of psycho-social adaptation by C.R. Rogers and R.F. Dymond methods. To analyze the dependence between variances, multiple linear regression with Akaike information criteria and stepwise variable method was used. Results. The average level of alexithymia in the subjects was 57.6 ± 14.1 scores: it points out an elevated severity of the condition. The patients have “difficulty identifying feelings” at 18.9±6.6 scores, “difficulty describing feelings” at 13.7±4.9 scores and “externally oriented thinking” at 25.04±5.4 scores. The average levels of the subscales of the psychosocial adaptation questionnaire demonstrate no difference from normal values, but integral indices were increased. After stepwise variable method we selected the minimum set of factor characteristics associated with the original variable. Two factors related to the level of alexithymia were identified: internality and emotional comfort. The analysis shows the adequacy of the linear two-factor model for predicting the level of alexithymia in men with substance use disorders that based on values of internality and emotional comfort. Conclusion. We found that increased level of internality and emotional comfort in men with substance use disorders can predict an elevating level of alexithymia.

Background: Patients’ expectations are an important determinant in their decision to undergo lumbar spinal surgery—particularly their expectations of recovery after surgery. The Hospital for Special Surgery Lumbar Spine Surgery Expectations Survey (HSS-LSSES) is one tool used to assess this; however, the original version was only available in English. Objective: We sought to evaluate the reliability and validity of a translated and adapted Russian-language version of the HSS-LSSES. Methods: This was a prospective study of 91 patients with degenerative disc disease who underwent lumbar spine surgery with instrumented fixation at a single institution in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Patients were recruited between December 2019 and February 2021 and asked about their expectations of surgery with a translated and adapted Russian version of the HSS-LSSES. To analyze construct validity, participants also completed disease-specific and general quality-of-life scales (Oswestry Disability Index, European Quality of Life–5 Dimensions, and 36-item Short-Form Health Survey). Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs; 2-way random effects model, absolute agreement) were used to determine test-retest reliability of the total score of the Russian HSS-LSSES. Internal consistency was evaluated through the estimation of Cronbach’s alpha between the test and retest response of the questionnaire. Results: The test-retest stability of the Russian HSS-LSSES evaluated through the estimation of ICC was found to have good stability. The instrument was shown to have high internal consistency. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that a translated and adapted Russian version of HSS-LSSES had good internal consistency, reliability, construct validity, and no floor and ceiling effects. Therefore, we recommend its use as a tool for evaluating Russian-speaking patients’ expectations before lumbar spine surgery.

The paper provides a study of religious lexis excerpted from the Russian translation of the encyclical letter Laudato si’. The Russian version of the encyclical was translated and published by Russian Franciscan Publishing House. The analyzed material consisting of single words, as well as compound multi-word expressions, related to the Catholic denomination (264 lexical items – 1000 uses, which accounts for 14% of the entire encyclical), was grouped into semantic fields. The vocabulary was described in terms of the semantics and its functioning and codification, both in the contemporary Russian religious language and in general Russian language. It was assumed that the encyclical is addressed not only to the representatives of the Church hierarchy but also to all the faithful. Hence, there was the need to draw attention to the pragmatic aspects of the religious language, including the balance between comprehensibility and the use of specialist theological terminology in the translated text. It was demonstrated that the majority of the lexical items of religious terminology is coded by the explanatory dictionary of the contemporary Russian language, except for 14 lexical items related to the Catholic denomination that enhance the lexis of the contemporaryRussian language.

The Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21) is one of the most common instruments for assessing psychological distress [2]. The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Russian DASS-21. The participants were 1,153 Russian-speaking adults aged 18 to 84 years. In addition to the Russian DASS-21, the participants completed the Symptom Check List-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) and Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). A series of confirmatory factor analyses showed the bifactor structure of the Russian DASS-21, full invariance by gender and partial invariance by age. The Russian DASS-21 scores were negatively correlated with the SF-36 scores and positively associated with the SCL-90-R scores, suggesting the convergent validity. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were 0.90, 0.85 and 0.91 for the depression, anxiety, and stress subscales, and 0.95 for the general psychological distress score, indicating the internal reliability. Thus, the Russian DASS-21 is a valid and reliable instrument and can be used for screening and monitoring psychological distress in Russian-speaking respondents.
