Since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations, sustainability has been a key priority for European governments. While previous studies have investigated the associations between indicators of sustainable development, few have directly considered a multidimensional approach to assess and compare the performance of regions in terms of sustainable development. As such, a comprehensive assessment of regional sustainable performance is thus still needed. In this paper, the concept of sustainability relies on the construction of six composite indices (environment and natural resources, energy transition, sustainable mobility, economic dynamism, social cohesion and solidarity, and governance and citizenship) with the aim to provide an evaluation framework for empirically comparing the performance of the 96 metropolitan French Departments. Each dimension is explored by spatial autocorrelation analysis and Hierarchical Ascending Classification (HAC) to classify French Departments providing five different regional profiles of sustainable development. The findings make it possible to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the departments in the implementation of sustainable development. This approach provides the bases for a systematic monitoring of sustainable development policies at the regional scale.

Bioenergy is expected to play a key role in achieving a future sustainable energy system. Sweet sorghum-based fuel ethanol, one of the most promising bioenergy sources in China, has been receiving considerable attention. However, the conflict between sweet sorghum development and traditional water use has not been fully considered. The article presents an integrated method for evaluating water stress from sweet sorghum-based fuel ethanol in China. The region for developing sweet sorghum was identified from the perspective of sustainable development of water resources. First, the spatial distribution of the water demand of sweet sorghum-based fuel ethanol was generated with a Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) model coupled with Geo-Information System (GIS). Subsequently, the surplus of water resources at the provincial scale and precipitation at the pixel scale were considered during the growth period of sweet sorghum, and the potential conflicts between the supply and demand of water resources were analyzed at regional scale monthly. Finally, the development level of sweet sorghum-based fuel ethanol was determined. The results showed that if the pressure of water consumption of sweet sorghum on regional water resources was taken into account, about 23% of the original marginal land was not suitable for development of sweet sorghum-based fuel ethanol, mainly distributed in Beijing, Hebei, Ningxia, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Tianjin. In future energy planning, the water demand of energy plants must be fully considered to ensure its sustainable development.

Abstract Introduces what Creative Tourism Network is, the paper also presents how creative tourism is important. Creative tourism is important in two main ways: it meets a growing and irreversible demand that reflects social changes more than a marketing gimmick, and it is, above all, perceived by the territories as a lever for sustainable development. Indeed, far from being considered as a danger for local communities as mainstream tourism used to be; creative tourism is valued for its capacity to create a value chain at the local and regional scale, by turning weaknesses and negative externalities into a virtuous ecosystem. In addition to this, assets such as communities' empowerment, inclusiveness, seasonality, resilience, intangible heritage recovery, social cohesion, and governance (just to mention a few) are applicable to any kind of destination and are particularly beneficial for the rural areas that cannot rely on other industrial sectors. The destinations that are part of the Creative Tourism Network ® are labelled 'CreativeFriendly' for guaranteeing both the quality and authenticity of the creative experiences they are promoting, as well as for the value chain generated through the project design.

The main purpose of this study is to explore the impact of analysis scale on the performance of a quantitative model for landslide susceptibility assessment through empirical analyses in the northern Peloponnese, Greece. A multivariate statistical model like logistic regression (LR) was applied at two different scales (a regional and a more detailed scale). Due to this scale difference, the implementation of the model was based on two landslide inventories representing in a different way the landslide occurrence (as point and polygon features), and two datasets of similar geo-environmental factors characterized by a different size of grid cells (90 m and 20 m). Model performance was tested by a standard validation method like receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis. The validation results in terms of accuracy (about 76%) and prediction ability (Area under the Curve (AUC) = 0.84) of the model revealed that the more detailed scale analysis is more appropriate for landslide susceptibility assessment and mapping in the catchment under investigation than the regional scale analysis.
