The Delayed Stimulus Suffix Effect following Arhythmic Stimulus Presentation

In auditory memory span experiments an extra word presented at the end of the list impairs performance on the last few items even though it is completely redundant; delaying this stimulus suffix past the time when an additional memory item would have occurred–-so that the rate of presentation is retarded for the suffix–-reduces the magnitude of the performance impairment. One account of this pattern of results is that during presentation of the items the subject adjusts periodic bursts of attention to the regular cadence of new information. Since an immediate suffix is in time with this cadence and a delayed suffix not, the larger effect of the former is explained without appeal to any process dependent on real time. In the present study the stimulus items were presented in an arhythmic manner with interstimulus intervals ranging from 100 to 900 ms on a random basis. Under these conditions the same effect of delaying the suffix was observed as is typical of rhythmic stimulus presentation; therefore, the rhythm hypothesis for the effect is not supported.

Ten children with high scores on an auditory memory span task were significantly better at imitating three non-English phones than 10 children with low auditory memory span scores. An additional 10 children with high scores on an oral stereognosis task were significantly better at imitating two of the three phones than 10 children with low oral stereognosis scores. Auditory memory span and oral stereognosis appear to be important subskills in the learning of new articulations, perhaps explaining their appearance in the literature as “etiologies” of disordered articulation. Although articulation development and the experimental acquisition of non-English phones have certain obvious differences, they seem to share some common processes, suggesting that the sound learning framework may be an efficacious technique for revealing otherwise inaccessible information.

Perimeter control is used to regulate transfer flows between urban regions. The greedy control (GC) method takes either the minimum or the maximum for the control inputs. Although it has the advantage of simplicity for real-time feasibility, a few existing studies have shown that it can sometimes have negative impacts because of unnecessary transfer flow restrictions. To reduce unnecessary restrictions, this study provides a method that gives flexibility to ease the strict conditions of the conventional GC. First, we propose a modification as a way of granting exceptions to the flow restriction under specific conditions. Second, we develop an algorithm to determine the threshold dynamically for accepting the exception, by comparing the possible outflow loss of the subject region and the possible outflow gain of its neighboring regions. The test results show that this flexible greedy control can handle the balance between the transfer demands and the greed of regions for securing the supply level, while increasing the performance in both vehicle hours traveled and trip completion.

The title of this talk is really just a different phrasing from one I have used at several IAU meetings on the subject of numbers and kinds of variables in globular clusters. To furnish this material, I have finished the Third Catalogue of Variables in Globular Clusters. Since many of you are coming to this Colloquium with new information, the Catalogue is in draft form with a request that corrections and additions be given me by October 2, after which the draft will go to the printer.The First Catalogue of Variables in Globular Clusters was published at this observatory in 1939 and the Second Catalogue in 1955. In 1966 appeared the excellent Catalogue of Variables South of Declination—29° by Fourcade, Laborde and Albarracin, with splendid large prints of identification charts.

Abstract This paper describes the combination of strategies deployed to optimize horizontal well placement in a 40 ft thick isotropic sand with very low resistivity contrast compared to an underlying anisotropic shale in Semoga field. These strategies were developed due to previously unsuccessful attempts to drill a horizontal well with multiple side-tracks that was finally drilled and completed as a high-inclined well. To maximize reservoir contact of the subject horizontal well, a new methodology on well placement was developed by applying lessons learned, taking into account the additional challenges within this well. The first approach was to conduct a thorough analysis on the previous inclined well to evaluate each formation layer’s anisotropy ratio to be used in an effective geosteering model that could better simulate the real time environment. Correct selections of geosteering tools based on comprehensive pre-well modelling was considered to ensure on-target landing section to facilitate an effective lateral section. A comprehensive geosteering pre-well model was constructed to guide real-time operations. In the subject horizontal well, landing strategy was analysed in four stages of anisotropy ratio. The lateral section strategy focused on how to cater for the expected fault and maintain the trajectory to maximize reservoir exposure. Execution of the geosteering operations resulted in 100% reservoir contact. By monitoring the behaviour of shale anisotropy ratio from resistivity measurements and gamma ray at-bit data while drilling, the subject well was precisely landed at 11.5 ft TVD below the top of target sand. In the lateral section, wellbore trajectory intersected two faults exhibiting greater associated throw compared to the seismic estimate. Resistivity geo-signal and azimuthal resistivity responses were used to maintain the wellbore attitude inside the target reservoir. In this case history well with a low resistivity contrast environment, this methodology successfully enabled efficient operations to land the well precisely at the target with minimum borehole tortuosity. This was achieved by reducing geological uncertainty due to anomalous resistivity data responding to shale electrical anisotropy. Recognition of these electromagnetic resistivity values also played an important role in identifying the overlain anisotropic shale layer, hence avoiding reservoir exit. This workflow also helped in benchmarking future horizontal well placement operations in Semoga Field. A new type of case study, called the real-time case (RTC), was produced in the fall of 2001 and distributed via the Internet to business classes at four universities in the US and Canada. The real-time case presented the story of one company's growth and development throughout a 14-week semester. A case writer stationed full-time at the subject company published case installments weekly on the Web, allowing students to view the company-building process as it happened. The 14-week coverage of RTC enabled students to study the subject company in unprecedented depth and detail. RTC's real-time interactivity allowed students to share their analyses and best thinking with the company leadership during the company’s decision-making process.A major objective in producing the case was to heighten student engagement with the case material. To evaluate whether this objective was achieved, a survey and a focus group discussion were conducted with one of the participating MBA classes. Results from the survey and the focus group showed a high degree of engagement, plus many other benefits from the new type of case study.

Introduction. Objective and regular students’ knowledge monitoring in technical subjects can be implemented by means of special tests allowing for the required mastering level of the matter and the reliable consolidation of the acquired knowledge. Various aspects of the application of tests in the academic activity were considered. Materials and methods. Tests used in practical studies should meet specific requirements, such as: validity, definiteness, simplicity, unambiguity, reliability. The identification of mastering levels makes it possible to “troubleshoot” and to improve the academic activity and the mastering degree of the competences by the students. Based on the assessment of the studying pattern of the forthcoming activity, one could point out four mastering levels of the subject matter. Level I tests include recognition, discrimination and classification. Level II tests monitor the mastering of the subject in the level of “reproduction” allowing for retrieval of information from the memory and its analysis, for routine assignment solutions. Level III tests impose special assignments challenging a student with quests for which no ready algorithms are catered, whereas the solutions found lead to obtaining of subjectively new information. Level IV tests reveal students’ capability to take decisions in new problematic situations, the solutions found, being a result of creative activity, are followed by obtaining of objectively new information. Results. To establish an efficient system of monitoring tests in a certain subject, a number of basic prerequisites is required, such as a data base, a sample group of with the required number of assignments, at least 30 and maximum 70, a time limit in accordance with the required labor intensity, assessment of the assignments and its criteria, the output of the results. Conclusions. If there is a required number of computers of at least one PC per two students, correctly arranged computer testing considerably reduces time demand of a monitoring event, increases the responsibility and the progress of the students, guarantees the objectiveness of the knowledge monitoring and helps to avoid conflicts.

Point of subjective simultaneity and simple reaction time were compared for stimuli with different rise times. It was found that these measures behave differently. To explain the result it is suggested that in the case of temporal-order judgment the subject takes into account not only the stimulus onset but also other events connected with stimulus presentation.

According to Nonaka & Takeuchi (1995), the majority of the organizational knowledge comes from interactions between people. People tend to reuse solutions from other persons in order to gain productivity. When people communicate to exchange information or acquire knowledge, the process is named Collaboration. Collaboration is one of the most important tasks for innovation and competitive advantage within learning organizations (Senge, 2001). It is important to record knowledge to later reuse and analysis. If knowledge is not adequately recorded, organized and retrieved, the consequence is re-work, low productivity and lost of opportunities. Collaboration may be realized through synchronous interactions (e.g., exchange of messages in a chat), asynchronous interactions (e.g., electronic mailing lists or forums), direct contact (e.g., two persons talking) or indirect contact (when someone stores knowledge and others can retrieve this knowledge in a remote place or time). In special, chat rooms are becoming important tools for collaboration among people and knowledge exchange. Intelligent software systems may be integrated into chat rooms in order to help people in this collaboration task. For example, systems can identify the theme being discussed and then offer new information or can remember people of existing information sources. This kind of systems is named recommender systems. Furthermore, chat sessions have implicit knowledge about what the participants know and how they are viewing the world. Analyzing chat discussions allows understanding what people are looking for and how people collaborates one with each other. Intelligent software systems can analyze discussions in chats to extract knowledge about the group or about the subject being discussed. Mining tools can analyze chat discussions to understand what is being discussed and help people. For example, a recommender system can analyze textual messages posted in a web chat, identify the subject of the discussion and then look for items stored in a Digital Library to recommend individually to each participant of the discussion. Items can be electronic documents, web pages and bibliographic references stored in a digital library, past discussions and authorities (people with expertise in the subject being discussed). Besides that, mining tools can analyze the whole discussion to map the knowledge exchanged among the chat participants. The benefits of such technology include supporting learning environments, knowledge management efforts within organizations, advertisement and support to decisions.
