In this paper, an interlayer contact bonding model according to the Coulomb friction model was developed by contact element and target element to accurately simulate the bonding condition between the adjacent layers of semi-rigid base asphalt pavement. The interlayer contact bonding model can be used to not only simulate the partial bond condition between adjacent layers but also imitate the phenomenon of bonding failure between adjacent layers. Semi-rigid base asphalt pavement structure, finite element mesh, material property with temperature, kinds of interlayer bonding failure, and moving load were explained in detail, and the responses of the semi-rigid base asphalt pavement structure were calculated and analyzed by this model at the room temperature and the higher temperature. The results indicated that the disengaging area between the asphalt concrete layer and the base layer can negatively affect the strain responses of asphalt pavement, especially at the higher temperature, and it can also weaken the asphalt pavement performance with the increase of the disengaging area. The deformation of semi-rigid base asphalt pavement is intensified under the action of the high temperature and the overloads, which would be easy to result in potential pavement structural deficiency. At the higher temperature, the adverse effect of moving loads on asphalt pavement is greater than that of roadbed, and the responses of the asphalt pavement decrease with the increase of the vehicle speed.

In order to analyze the dynamic response of asphalt pavement under vehicle load, the random characteristic of pavement roughness was considered and the vehicle was simplified into 1/2 model with four freedom degrees when establishing the dynamic load model. Then the sequence of the random dynamic load coefficient was obtained by developing a MATLAB program based on the incremental Newmark-β method. Based on the plane strain assumption, a two-dimensional layered finite element model of asphalt pavement was established by ABAQUS software. Then the dynamic load coefficient was used to modify tire pressure that would be applied on the ABAQUS model. Then dynamic response rule of the model and how it was effected by vehicle speed were studied under random load. The results show that under the condition of random load, dynamic response of the pavement structure exhibiting a fluctuation trend as vehicle speed increases and the dynamic response characteristics of each point is different.

In order to study the dynamic response law of semi-rigid base of asphalt pavement under heavy load traffic, the viscoelastic system model under heavy load was established based on measured loading pattern and axle load distribution with the finite element software ANSYS12.0. Heavy load traffic effect on the dynamic response of semi-rigid base of asphalt pavement was discussed . The results show that semi-rigid asphalt pavement structure dynamic response value changed with the increase of axle load; time varying regularity of stress and strain was not the same in different directions.

As vehicle flow on arterial highway in Inner Mongolia sharply increased, the originally designed natural increase rate of 8% per year has been exceeded on the vehicle flow in some sections. According to statistics, monthly average vehicle flow on major section of G6 expressway has reached a standard flow of 67478 vehicles per day and night, of which in 70-80% are large ones for coal transportation. Therefore, pavement load and road capacity have exceed the designed expressway load capacity. At present, semi-rigid base asphalt pavement structure is still widely used for high-grade highway pavement in Inner Mongolia. With years of construction for such pavement structure, a great deal of valuable experience has been gained on construction technology. However, there are still a few deficiencies in the quality of raw materials, gradation control of asphalt mixture and adjustment of equipment, etc. Hohhot circle expressway connects with the G6 and G7 expressways, suffering from problems such as large vehicle flow and load overweight. This paper introduced a key technique that should be properly controlled during construction of such pavement structure, emphasized technique control and management of the following aspects, i.e. ballast sizes and gradation control, asphalt concrete mixture, adjustment of pavers, validation of mixing proportion in production and reasonable arrangement of process, and summarized corresponding technical measures taken during construction of asphalt pavement in this project.

With the constant increasing of traffic flow and axle load, the early failure of semi-rigid base asphalt pavement is increasingly serious in China. The bad durability and short service life of pavement have become main obstacles in road construction development. Based on the experience of successful application, the early failure of semi-rigid base asphalt pavement is solved, and the service life of pavement is increased by using of the composite asphalt pavement. To solve the design problem of the composite asphalt pavement , its mechanical properties influence results of are obtained by the factors, such as shear strain, shear stress, compression strain on top of subgrade, etc, by a lot of calculation using Shell pavement design software. These provide theoretical basis for durable asphalt pavement design based on rut-resistance property.
