In this study, the relationship between fluid and crystallised intelligence and vocabulary size was investigated among Iranian students learning French as a foreign language. Studies emphasised on the importance of vocabulary size and language comprehension and tried to discover mental and intelligence factors related to this issue. To administer the present quantitative study, the Persian Adaptation of Baddeley’s (1968) Grammatical reasoning Test for Fluid Intelligence, Persian Test of Baghaei & Tabatabaee (2015) for Crystallised intelligence, and Nation’s (2012) Test of Vocabulary Size were instrumented. Population of the study was 100 intermediate learners of French language from three branches of Safir institute in Tehran. Data was analysed using SPSS and correlational tools to specify the variables correlation. Result showed that there is a significant relationship between crystallised intelligence and size of vocabulary (p<0.1), while there was no significant relationship between fluid intelligence and vocabulary size (p>0.5). It was concluded that fluid intelligence does not predict learners’ vocabulary size, but crystallised intelligence as grows gradually determines learners’ vocabulary size.

What is comparative literature? Not a theory or a methodology, certainly (which raises the question of why this article should appear in a series so entitled), though theories and methodologies aplenty occur as part of its typical business. Is there, or can there be, an object of knowledge identifiable as “comparative literature”?When I began hearing about comparative literature in the middle 1970s, there was a fairly straightforward means of distinguishing comparative literature on the university campuses where it was done. The English department pursued knowledge of language and literature in one language; the foreign language departments pursued similar studies in two languages (typically English, assumed to be most students' native language, plus the foreign tongue); and comparative literature committees, programs, or departments carried out literary analysis in at least three languages at once.

Abstract: Philip Melanchthon is a practically unknown thinker in Brazil, especially in the realm of philosophical studies. Being one of the main representatives of the ideals of the Protestant Reformation in the 16. Century, he is generally remembered only as Luther’s right-hand man. Nevertheless, Melanchthon was a multidisciplinary intellectual. Shaped in the humanistic ideals of the Renaissance, he abundantly published in many fields, from language studies (particularly Latin and Greek), literary analysis of classical antiquity works, astrology, astronomy, history, education, to rhetoric and philosophy (particularly ethics and logic). In addition, he idealized and promoted a deep reformulation of the German school and university system, for which he was awarded the title of praeceptor germaniae. This besides his engagement with the religious movement of the Reformation, his theological elaboration, and the doctrinal controversies as well as the practical organization of church life which such engagement implied. This paper will examine some contemporary studies on the role philosophy played in Melanchthon’s thought, particularly its contribution to the philosophical understanding of religion. Ernst Troeltsch had already shown how Melanchthon’s peculiar conception had become the basis for the organization of university studies during the period known as Protestant orthodoxy that preceded the Age of Enlightenment. The state of research on one of the paradigmatic modes through which the relationship between religion and rationality was founded shows Melanchthon’s significance for understanding the development of the philosophy of religion.

After five years of discussions and extensions, Congress has passed and the president has signed the first reauthorization of the Higher Education Act (HEA) since 1998. Although most of the HEA deals with federal student aid, the legislation also includes many federal programs affecting colleges and universities, including support for international education and foreign language studies and graduate education. The new law also has a number of provisions reflecting some of the policy controversies affecting higher education.
