This paper details a systematic investigation of the formation of Al-based bulk metallic glasses, expanding on an earlier brief report.[] We discuss an approach for designing and predicting the best glass-forming composition in the Al–TM–RE systems, based on the atomic cluster packing model for the internal structure of the glass. The effects of additional elements in quaternary and quinary systems on the glass-forming ability and thermal stability of the glasses are also discussed. Three new compositions, Al86Ni6Y4.5Co2La1.5, Al86Ni7Y5Co1La1 and Al86Ni7Y4.5Co1La1.5, are capable of forming fully glassy rods of 1 mm in diameter; their glass transition and other thermal properties are systematically characterized.

Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) alloys (Fe71.2B24Y4.8)96Nb4-xZrx (x = 1-4 at.%) with a maximum diameter of 5 mm were synthesized with low purity materials by copper mold casting technique. The effect of Zr substitution for Nb on the structure, thermal stability and the magnetic properties has been studied. It was found that the substitution of an appropriate amount of Zr for Nb can improve the glass forming ability. The wide supercooled liquid region ∆Tx (exceeding 123 K) and a high Tg (exceeding 868 K) demonstrated a high thermal stability of the present Fe-based BMGs. In addition, these BMGs also exhibit good soft magnetic properties with relatively high saturation magnetization of 88 emu/g, and low coercivity of 20 Oe.

Nanoindentation and thermomechanical experiments on three types of metallic glasses with different glass forming ability were carried out. The nanoindentation behaviour at room temperature was associated with the creep at elevated temperatures. Different discontinuity populations and their shape observed on the nanoindentation loading curves were compared with morphology of plastic deformed indent regions. The influence of the differences in thermal stability of studied alloys on the nanoindentation in these alloys were studied as well.
