Climate change, social policy, and global governance

This paper considers the challenge to global social policy posed by global climate change. It sets side by side global social policies and global climate change policies, and surveys the governance of each. The first part summarises global social policy in recent years, distinguishing (1) the policies and practices pursued in the global arena, and (2) the structures of global governance and the role of significant global actors. The second part repeats this at a greater length for global climate change. The third part then considers the relationship between these two sets of policies/practices and governance structures, in particular the potential conflicts between the pursuit of social justice and environmental sustainability. It identifies two possible responses – compensation and co-benefits – and maps these onto current global actors, before concluding with a radical vision of eco-social policy.

What kinds of issues does the global crisis of climate change present to aesthetics, and how will they challenge the field to respond? This paper argues that a new research agenda is needed for aesthetics with respect to global climate change (GCC) and outlines a set of foundational issues which are especially pressing: (1) attention to environments that have been neglected by philosophers, for example, the cryosphere and aerosphere; (2) negative aesthetics of environment, in order to grasp aesthetic experiences, meanings, and dis/values in light of the catastrophic effects of GCC; (3) bringing intergenerational thinking into aesthetics through concepts of temporality and ‘future aesthetics’ (4) understanding the relationship between aesthetic and ethical values as they arise in regard to GCC.

Global climate change is one of the most important challenges and threats to economic, social and environmental sustainability.. Reducing electrical power demand is an important and necessary step in lessening global climate change and preserving our energy resources for future generations. The objective of this work is the development and demonstration of a quantitative thermographic system to rapidly and noninvasively determine in-use electrical motor efficiency. The development has included testing of four motors in a controlled laboratory setting. This setting permits the complete and steady measurement of electrical power draw, mechanical load applied in addition to the thermal imaging. It provides a reliable means to validate the quantitative thermographic system. The thermographic technique proved to be reliable for all motors at 60% or more of full load.

Wetlands (WLs) in the landscapes are important for the GHGs production, ingesting, and exchange with the atmosphere. In this chapter, the authors illustrated how the WLs influence climate change, even though it is typical for determining the climatic role of WLs in the broader perspective. The conclusions might be wary based on the radiative balance as the radiative forcing since the 1750s or climatic roles are continuously changing in the wetlands. Degradation of WLs leads to reducing their functioning, and GHG fluxes might change and alter the climatic roles of the WLs. The chapter demonstrated that WL disturbances might cause global warming for a longer duration even though the WLs are restored or managed by replacing them with the mitigation WLs. Thus, activities that cause disturbance in the WLs leading to carbon oxidation in the soils should be avoided. Regulating the climate is an ecosystem service in the WLs; during the planning of the WLs, protection, restoration, and creation, environmental management should be considered.
