A new species of Terebellidae, Pistacolinisp. n., has been identified from the harbour of Banyuls-sur-Mer, north-western Mediterranean Sea. This new species was found in very high densities, exclusively in gravelly sand deposited manually, and was not found in the original source habitat of the gravel. This species is characterized by the colour of the ventral shields with pinkish anterior part and a blood red posterior part in live specimens, a pair of unequal-sized plumose branchiae inserted on segment II and anterior thoracic neuropodia with long-handled uncini. The presence of long-handled uncini even in the smallest specimens constitutes the major difference between Pistacolinisp. n. and other Pista species with a single pair of branchiae such as P.lornensis and P.bansei.

Benthic monitoring of the marine shallow bottoms off Menorca (Balearic Islands, western Mediterranean) has yielded several specimens of the leptostracan genus Paranebalia Claus, 1880. This finding constitutes the first report of the genus from European latitudes and the Mediterranean Sea and therefore the third leptostracan genus known from the Mediterranean. Specimens are described, illustrated and compared to other known species; they might represent a new species but their state of maturity and the lack of an appropriate diagnosis for the type species of the genus, Paranebalia longipes (Willemöes-Suhm, 1875), did not allow to confirm its taxonomic status.

Lumbrinerids are amongst the most abundant and diverse polychaete families in worldwide continental shelves, and have received attention recently through the description of several new species and new occurrences. Herein, a total of four lumbrinerid species are firstly reported in the eastern and southern Spanish continental shelf, extending their biogeographic distribution to the western Mediterranean Sea and increasing up to 25 the number of species known in the Iberian Peninsula coasts. New insights on taxonomy, ecological and biogeographic preferences and an updated taxonomic key for Iberian coasts and surrounding areas are also provided.

A new species of Gammarella Bate, 1857 is described from shallow water, inhabiting the interstitial system in soft bottoms of the Chafarinas Archipelago (western Mediterranean,N. Africa). The relationships of Gammarella with the genera Nuuanu and Cottesloe are briefly discussed. Numerical taxonomic methods are utilized to differentiate between the morphologically related species and the intermediate species. In a table the principal differentiating characters of Gammarella species are presented. Gammarella garciai n. sp. is characterized by its intermediate position between Gammarella, Nuuanu and Cottesloe, showing an intergradation of characters. Gammarella garciai n. sp. and G. merringannee show ecologically intermediate characters between the larger species, probably nestling, with preference for lightless environments, and the smaller species. The group of smaller species, with eyes poorly developedor absent, show interstitial preferences. A map of the world distribution and a key to the 11 known Gammarella species are presented.

This study recognises five species of Onuphis and four species of Aponuphis from southwestern Europe, represented in the Bay of Biscay, the Atlantic coasts of Iberia and the western Mediterranean Sea. One species, Onuphis anadonae sp. nov., is newly described and another species, Aponuphis willsiei Cantone & Bellan, 1996 is a new record for the Iberian Peninsula waters. Aponuphis ornata (Fauvel, 1928) and A. willsiei are shown to be tube brooders and the development of the juveniles is described. The usefulness of some Onuphis characters, as well as the size-dependent distribution of branchiae and chaetae, complicating Aponuphis species identification, are discussed. We are presenting descriptions and photographs of the distinctive Aponuphis colour pattern which we recommend as an identificatory tool instead. A dichotomous key to all species is included.
