It seems well established that during normal lactation there passes a slight but well defined quantity of blood protein into the udder. When a specific serum precipitin is applied to diluted milk the reaction occurs at a relatively uniform level of dilution. This line may well be considered the normal level of blood protein elimination. In the main the serum protein level is the same when mastitis streptococci are present as when they are absent, provided they are not too numerous. On the other hand it has been shown that when streptococci are present in large numbers the milk while apparently normal reacts at dilutions considerably higher than the normal. In the non-lactating udder, particularly during the latter end of gestation, serum proteins accumulate. Little and Orcutt have shown that certain antibodies tend to become greatly concentrated within the udder. Howe and others have shown that the colostrum of cows is rich in blood proteins. It is to be noted, however, that colostrum while rich in serum proteins usually reacts with serum precipitin to about one-half the titer of the blood serum itself. It may well be that certain proteins of the blood passing into the acini are reabsorbed, leaving a portion of the antigen within the udder. Thus a gradual accumulation of antigen may occur. Shortly after parturition the udder may be drained with a consequent marked fall in serum content. There, however, apparently exists for the next few days considerable permeability of the capillaries for serum proteins. This is borne out by the reaction of the milk to the serum precipitin, since it may react above the normal level for as long as 10 days or 2 weeks after parturition. During the course of inflammation there may occur a considerable outpouring of blood protein. In the severe cases the exudate may give a titer at as great a dilution as the blood serum. In other milder cases where the inflammation may be confined only to the mucosa of the milk cystern, there is usually little that is abnormal in the appearance of the milk. The precipitin test, however, indicates that serum proteins are present in definitely greater concentration than in normal milk. Of practical interest is the effect of heating the milk on the reaction of serum precipitin. Milk heated to a temperature as high as 66°C. for 20 minutes will react at the same dilutions as the raw milk. Milk pasteurized at 68–69°C. for 20 minutes will no longer react. The precipitin test, then, affords a ready means of detecting milk heated above 68–69°C. It is assumed that the precipitin test may have some further practical application. The evidence presented indicates a well defined serum proportion in the milk which may be increased during inflammation of the udder. The experiments in which mastitis exudate was mixed with varying quantities of market milk indicate that such mixtures can readily be detected with serum precipitin. It seems not improbable that some such procedure might be applied as a presumptive test to the product of small herds or to the mixed milk of a number of cows.

The intoxication which develops as the result of a simple obstruction or a closed intestinal loop is accompanied by definite changes in the coagulable proteins of the blood serum. These changes consist essentially in an alteration in the normal albumin-globulin ratio; the globulin fraction is greatly increased and at times the normal relation of the two fractions may show a complete inversion. The increase in the globulin content of the blood serum is most marked in the animals which show some of the complications met with in loop animals,—rupture of the loop and peritonitis. In the latter conditions especially, the globulin increase is rapid and large. We believe this reaction to be of diagnostic value in acute infections attended by the sudden liberation and absorption of a toxic exudate. Infections and intoxications produced by inflammatory irritants are also accompanied by a rise in the blood globulins. This observation suggests that tissue disintegration with absorption of toxic products is responsible for the changes noted, and that bacterial invasion is important only in as far as it gives rise to toxic substances. Animals which have developed a tolerance to proteose intoxication following the periodic injection of small doses of proteose do not show a globulin increase. These experiments do not support the view that the rise in globulins observed in these experimental conditions is an expression of a resistance or tolerance developed by the animal. From the experimental evidence it seems more probable that the alteration in the partition of the blood protein fractions is one of the results of the metabolic disturbance which has been shown to occur in these conditions.

Aedes aegypti is the major vector of dengue, yellow fever and chikungunya viruses that put millions of people in endemic countries at risk. Mass rearing of this mosquito is crucial for strategies that use modified insects to reduce vector populations and transmission of pathogens, such as sterile insect technique or population replacement. A major problem for vector mosquito mass rearing is the requirement of vertebrate blood for egg production since it poses significant costs as well as potential health hazards. Also regulations for human and animal use as blood source can pose a significant obstacle. A completely artificial diet that supports egg production in vector mosquitoes can solve this problem. In this study, we compared different blood fractions as dietary protein sources for mosquito egg production. We also tested artificial diets made from commercially available blood proteins (bovine serum albumin (BSA) and hemoglobin). We found that Ae. aegypti performed vitellogenesis and produced eggs when given whole bovine blood, serum, or an artificial diet containing BSA. Conversely, egg production was impaired after feeding of the red blood cell fraction or an artificial diet containing only hemoglobin. Our results indicate that serum proteins, not hemoglobin, may replace vertebrate blood in artificial diets for mass mosquito rearing.

This review informs about the chemical composition of plasma proteins majorly albumin and globulin. Blood proteins, also called plasma proteins, are found in blood plasma. While, serum proteins are present in the human body in very high quantities for other proteins. Hundreds of proteins are dissolved in the plasma but only two major protein groups are present i.e. Albumin and Globulin. Albumin is a very important component (55% of blood proteins) and it is made by the liver. There is an immediate correlation between albumin turnover and body size. Globulin is formed from different proteins called alpha, beta, and gamma types (38% of blood proteins) but a number of the globulins are mainly made by the liver, while others are made by the immune system. The average serum protein level existing in the human body is 6 to 8g/dl but 3.5 to 5.0g/dl is making up only albumin and globulin makes up 2/3gl. Different aspects of the proteins are discussed below.

SummaryNatural coagulation inhibitor factors were studied in sera, or in fractions of sera, from patients with congenital partial deficiency of antithrombin and from normal persons. In the patients’ sera the progressive antithrombin (antithrombin III) and heparin cofactor (antithrombin II) had both been measured around 50 per cent of normal level.No decreased activity could be demonstrated in the patients’ sera as to antiprothrombinase, the inhibitor against blood intrinsic prothrombinase activity.For anticonvertin, the inhibitor against the tissue convertin complex, the activity was found decreased to about the same level as that demonstrated for antithrombin III and II. The results lend strong support to the hypothesis that the activities measured as anticonvertin, antithrombin III and antithrombin II represent functions of the same blood protein, which on the other side appears to be distinct from antiprothrombinase. In accordance with this explanation, an antithrombin III concentrate had also antithrombin II and anticonvertin activity, and further, adsorption of a normal human serum with convertin appeared to specifically reduce its antithrombin III activity.The inhibitor against activated antihemophilic C factor (AHC’ = activated f. XI) was studied in sera adsorbed with BaS04 and celite. The inhibitor activity was found at normal level in the patients’ sera, consistent with the view that anti-AHC’ is distinct from antithrombin III, II and from anticonvertin. No acceleration of the anti-AHC’ activity could be demonstrated after addition to the inhibition mixture of weak solutions of heparin.The results are discussed.

Abstract Feeding pigs with very low-protein (VLP) and low-phosphorous (P) diets may be useful for decreasing the nutrients excretion to the environment; however, this practice negatively impacts the animals’ growth performance. A beneficial effect of corn-expressed phytase (CEP) on growth performance of pigs fed with VLP diets was shown by our group recently. Little is known whether this improvement is related with alterations in profile of blood proteins and amino acids (AA). The objective of this study was to investigate whether supplementation of VLP, low-calcium (Ca) and low-P diets with a CEP can influence the serum AA and proteomics profiles in pigs. Forty-eight weaned barrows were subjected into one of the following groups (n = 8/group) for 4 weeks: positive control (PC), negative control-reduced protein (NC), NC+low-dose CEP, i.e 2,000 FTU/kg (LD), NC+high-dose CEP, i.e. 4,000 FTU/kg (HD), LD with reduced Ca/P (LDR), and HD with reduced Ca/P (HDR). At week 4, blood samples were collected from all pigs. Compared to PC, NC reduced the serum leucine and phenylalanine concentrations; however, LD recovered their levels. Using trypsinolysis and mass spectrometry, 703 serum proteins were identified and quantified, wherein 25 were found to be differentially expressed among groups. Hierarchical clustering showed a clear separation in proteins identified among dietary groups. Compared to NC, 23 and 24 proteins were found to be differentially expressed in serum of LD and HD groups, respectively, with some important proteins in growth regulation such as SELENOP being upregulated and the IGFBP family being downregulated in these groups. A positive correlation was detected between growth and abundance of BGN, TLN1, PDLIM1 and COL1A2 that are involved in bone mineralization and muscle structure development. Thus, CEP improved the serum profile of some essential AA and affected the expression of proteins involved in regulation of growth in pigs fed with VLP diets.
