Galaxy outflows are a vital mechanism in the regulation of galaxy evolution through feedback and enrichment. NGC 2146, a nearby infrared luminous galaxy (LIRG), presents evidence for outflows along the disk minor axis in all gas phases (ionized, neutral atomic and molecular). We present new far-IR Herschel imaging and spectroscopy of this galaxy from the Key Insights on Nearby Galaxies: a Far-Infrared Survey with Herschel (KINGFISH) project, as well as new optical integral field unit spectroscopy, to map the kinematics and gas excitation in the central 5 kpc and trace the dust distribution (Kreckel et al.2014). We observe an increased velocity dispersion in the [OI] 62 um, [OIII] 88 um, [NII] 122 um and [CII] 158 um fine-structure lines that is spatially coincident with shocked gas above and below the disk.

Abstract Space Infrared Telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA), the cryogenic infrared space telescope recently pre-selected for a ‘Phase A’ concept study as one of the three remaining candidates for European Space Agency (ESA's) fifth medium class (M5) mission, is foreseen to include a far-infrared polarimetric imager [SPICA-POL, now called B-fields with BOlometers and Polarizers (B-BOP)], which would offer a unique opportunity to resolve major issues in our understanding of the nearby, cold magnetised Universe. This paper presents an overview of the main science drivers for B-BOP, including high dynamic range polarimetric imaging of the cold interstellar medium (ISM) in both our Milky Way and nearby galaxies. Thanks to a cooled telescope, B-BOP will deliver wide-field 100–350 $\mu$ m images of linearly polarised dust emission in Stokes Q and U with a resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, and both intensity and spatial dynamic ranges comparable to those achieved by Herschel images of the cold ISM in total intensity (Stokes I). The B-BOP 200 $\mu$ m images will also have a factor $\sim $ 30 higher resolution than Planck polarisation data. This will make B-BOP a unique tool for characterising the statistical properties of the magnetised ISM and probing the role of magnetic fields in the formation and evolution of the interstellar web of dusty molecular filaments giving birth to most stars in our Galaxy. B-BOP will also be a powerful instrument for studying the magnetism of nearby galaxies and testing Galactic dynamo models, constraining the physics of dust grain alignment, informing the problem of the interaction of cosmic rays with molecular clouds, tracing magnetic fields in the inner layers of protoplanetary disks, and monitoring accretion bursts in embedded protostars.

This paper is based on photometry from two different observational approaches. Both are of an explorative character and act as feasibility studies. For the future we plan to use these methods to study Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars in nearby galaxies.First, we present results on broad-band photometry in Bessell V and I, as well as narrow-band measurements in the Wing 778 nm and 812 nm filters of a galactic globular cluster using the new Austrian Oe-FOSC (Oesterreich Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera), a copy of the ESO Instrument EFOSC mounted on our 1.5 m-telescope.The second part of the contribution deals with the possibilities of using Gunn I, J and KS measurements originating from the DENIS (DEep Near Infrared Survey of the Southern Sky) project on similar objects. A few southern dwarf spheroidals already observed within DENIS (covering now some 40% of the southern hemisphere) are selected.

AbstractWe present the spectral energy distributions (SED) of the 323 galaxies of the Herschel Reference Survey. In order to provide templates for nearby galaxies calibrated on physical parameters, we computed mean SEDs per bin of morphological types and stellar masses. They will be very useful to study more distant galaxies and their evolution with redshift. This preliminary work aims to study how the most commonly used libraries (Chary & Elbaz 2001, Dale & Helou 2002 and Draine & Li 2007) reproduce the far-infrared emission of galaxies. First results show that they reproduce well the far-infrared part of mean SEDs. For single galaxies the Draine & Li (2007) models seem to reproduce very well the far-infrared emission, as does the Dale & Helou (2002).

AbstractThe infrared astronomical satellite AKARI performed an all sky survey at six infrared bands. We report here on the calibration of the all-sky image data, observed in the four long wavelength bands with the FIS instrument (AKARI Far-infrared All Sky Survey : AFASS). The preliminary image attains a calibration uncertainty and sensitivity of better than ~ 30% and ~ 10 MJy str−1, respectively, for all four bands. The point spread function (PSF) is obtained via a stacking technique. The data are shown to be useful for exploring the internal structure and dust spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of nearby galaxies.
