Abstract Spondias tuberosa Arr., a fructiferous tree endemic to the northeast Brazilian tropical dry forest called Caatinga, accounts for numerous benefits for its ecosystem as well as for the dwellers of the Caatinga. The tree serves as feed for pollinators and dispersers as well as fodder for domestic ruminants, and is a source of additional income for local smallholders and their families. Despite its vantages, it is facing several man-made and natural threats, and it is suspected that S. tuberosa could become extinct. Literature review suggests that S. tuberosa suffers a reduced regeneration leading to population decrease. At this juncture S. tuberosa cannot be considered threatened according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List Categories and Criteria, as it has not yet been assessed and hampered generative regeneration is not considered in the IUCN assessment. The combination of threats, however, may have already caused an extinction debt for S. tuberosa. Due to the observed decline in tree density, a thorough assessment of the S. tuberosa population is recommended, as well as a threat assessment throughout the entire Caatinga.

The removal of organic pollutants using green environmental photocatalytic degradation techniques urgently need high-performance catalysts. In this work, a facile one-step hydrothermal technique has been successfully applied to synthesize a Nb2O5 photocatalyst with uniform micro-flower structure for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) under UV irradiation. These nanocatalysts are characterized by transmission and scanning electron microscopies (TEM and SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method, and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). It is found that the prepared Nb2O5 micro-flowers presents a good crystal phases and consist of 3D hierarchical nanosheets with 400–500 nm in diameter. The surface area is as large as 48.6 m2 g−1. Importantly, the Nb2O5 micro-flowers exhibit superior catalytic activity up to 99.9% for the photodegradation of MO within 20 mins, which is about 60-fold and 4-fold larger than that of without catalysts (W/O) and commercial TiO2 (P25) sample, respectively. This excellent performance may be attributed to 3D porous structure with abundant catalytic active sites.

Wiesneria triandra (Dalzell) Micheli is an unusual annual plant of the Alismataceae with spike-like inflorescences bearing unisexual flowers. Shoot development follows the sympodial pattern of other Alismataceae, but the cycle is so condensed that initiation of each foliage leaf is followed by inflorescence formation. The plant develops a tufted habit by the formation of an unusual accesory bud adjacent to each inflorescence. Male flowers have three sepals, three petals, three stamens, and usually three carpellodes; female flowers have a similar perianth, three staminodes, and three or more carpels. Up to the first three carpels, floral parts are arranged in alternating trimerous whorls. Additional carpels may occur above and between those of the first whorl. The androecium is particularly unusual for the Alismataceae since it has conventional alternation of stamens with petals rather than the antipetalous pairs of stamens commonly perceived in the family, but the phylogenetic postion of Wiesneria within the family (as revealed by other studies) indicates that the apparently conventional androecium of Wiesneria represents a derived state rather than a primitive one. The unisexual flowers also represent a derived state.

Data on pollination ecology of Araceae are still scarce and most concern species belonging to the subfamily Aroideae (García-Robledo et al. 2004, Gibernau 2003, Ivancic et al. 2004, 2005; Maia & Schlindwein 2006). In this subfamily, inflorescences consist of unisexual flowers: female flowers are located in the lower portion and the male flowers are in the upper portion of the inflorescence (Mayo et al. 1997). In the documented neotropical Aroideae, pollinators are nocturnal beetles and pollination mechanisms take place within a floral chamber during a short flowering cycle (generally 24–48 h) with floral rewards (sterile flowers rich in proteins and/or lipids) for the beetle pollinators, the secretion of resin to secure pollen on the pollinator, and the production of heat and odours (Chouteau et al. 2007, García-Robledo et al. 2004, Gibernau & Barabé 2002, Gibernau et al. 1999, 2000, 2003; Maia & Schlindwein 2006, Young 1986).

O umbuzeiro (Spondias tuberosa Arruda), espécie nativa do semi-árido brasileiro, é um dos recursos genéticos mais importantes para a produção de frutos destinados ao consumo in natura e à industrialização. No melhoramento de espécies perenes, o uso de técnicas de avaliação genética com base em modelos mistos do tipo REML/BLUP (máxima verossimilhança restrita /melhor predição linear não viciada) é fundamental para a predição de valores genéticos aditivos e genotípicos de indivíduos com potencial para seleção, tanto em nível intrapopulacional como interpopulacional. Este procedimento vem sendo aplicado com sucesso no Brasil, no melhoramento de várias espécies frutíferas e florestais. O presente trabalho teve como objetivos estudar a variabilidade genética, estimar parâmetros genéticos e realizar a predição de valores genéticos dos indivíduos, utilizando a metodologia REML/BLUP a partir da avaliação de procedências e progênies de umbuzeiro. O ensaio foi instalado em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com arranjo hierárquico desbalanceado, constituído de três procedências e 42 progênies. Foram avaliados os caracteres altura de plantas (ALP), maior diâmetro de copa (MAC), menor diâmetro de copa (MEC), diâmetro do colo (DIC) e número de ramos primários (NRP), os quais são correlacionados à produção de frutos. Os resultados obtidos permitem afirmar que, no umbuzeiro, aos nove anos de idade, a maior parte da variabilidade genética encontrada concentra-se dentro de populações. Os caracteres MEC e MAC apresentaram, respectivamente, valores de herdabilidade individual no sentido restrito de 0,08 e 0,14 e ganhos de 6% e 9%, respectivamente, com a seleção dos dez melhores genitores.

Realizou-se um estudo na Embrapa-Centro de Pesquisa Agropecuária do Trópico Semi-Árido (CPATSA), Petrolina-PE, objetivando identificar os mecanismos, através dos quais o umbuzeiro (Spondias tuberosa Arr. Cam.) mantém o balanço hídrico interno durante as estações de seca e chuvosa. Os resultados obtidos basearam-se em observações do potencial hídrico e de seus componentes, utilizando-se da câmara de pressão e câmaras higrométricas / microvoltímetro. Sob condições de seca, os valores mais baixos de potencial hídrico e potencial osmótico foram observados em torno das 8 h, atingindo, respectivamente --0,97 MPa e --1,17 MPa, resultando em uma pressão de turgor de 0,2 MPa. A pressão mais baixa ocorreu às 16 h, atingindo 0,16 MPa. Entretanto, a recuperação hídrica não foi observada, até o final dia. Durante a estação chuvosa, os valores de mais baixos de potencial hídrico foram obtidos às 14 h , quando foram detectados, respectivamente --1,55 MPa. Neste momento, o potencial osmótico atingiu --1,57 MPa , culminando com uma pressão de turgor de 0,02 MPa. Entretanto, até o final do dia, a condição hídrica da planta foi similar à observada no início do dia. Estes resultados sugerem que o umbuzeiro apresenta duas estratégias para manter, durante o dia, um balanço hídrico interno favorável, dentro das condições ambientais estudadas. Sob condições de sequeiro, o balanço seria mantido através da utilização da água armazenada nas túberas e uma baixa transpiração. Durante a estação das chuvas, o balanço hídrico pode ter sido mediado por um ajuste osmótico, a julgar pelas variações observadas à tarde entre níveis de potencial hídrico e potencial osmótico.
