Pelargonium hammansbergense and P. roseopetalum are described as new species. Both are deciduous geophytes with turnip-shaped tubers belonging to P. section Hoarea. These two species share spathulate petals with narrow cuneate claws.  However, they differ in leaf shape, flower colour and markings on the petals. Their flower structure corresponds to that of P. aridicola, P. hirtipetalum, P. pubipetalum, P. reflexipetalum and P. tripalmatum. The seven species are compared with regard to the flower and leaf morphology, palynology and chromosome numbers. They all occur in the winter rainfall region along the west coast of South Africa. The two new species described here are illustrated and a key for the identification of the seven species with a P. aridicola flower type is included.

The removal of organic pollutants using green environmental photocatalytic degradation techniques urgently need high-performance catalysts. In this work, a facile one-step hydrothermal technique has been successfully applied to synthesize a Nb2O5 photocatalyst with uniform micro-flower structure for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) under UV irradiation. These nanocatalysts are characterized by transmission and scanning electron microscopies (TEM and SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method, and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). It is found that the prepared Nb2O5 micro-flowers presents a good crystal phases and consist of 3D hierarchical nanosheets with 400–500 nm in diameter. The surface area is as large as 48.6 m2 g−1. Importantly, the Nb2O5 micro-flowers exhibit superior catalytic activity up to 99.9% for the photodegradation of MO within 20 mins, which is about 60-fold and 4-fold larger than that of without catalysts (W/O) and commercial TiO2 (P25) sample, respectively. This excellent performance may be attributed to 3D porous structure with abundant catalytic active sites.

The digital elevation model and the earthquake focal mechanism are utilized to define the geological structure of the Pho Lu area, northwestern Vietnam. The results allow the identification of lineaments and recognition of the correlation between the lineaments and geological structures directed in the study area. The digital elevation model (DEM) was used in the methodology of interpretation trends of lineaments derived from various enhancing techniques to show that the most lineament trend in the NW‒ SE direction. Further more, the interpreted lineament map demonstrates the NW‒SE system is correlated with the Red River fault zone, which is interpreted as a positive flower structure combined with the focal mechanism of earthquake. The results also demonstrate the capacity to used the digital elevation model and focal mechanism of the earthquake to identify deep geological structures.

In this study, biometrics assessment of flower structure, cluster-, and berry-related traits were evaluated in a population of 90 muscadine grape genotypes for three consecutive years. This population consisted of 21 standard cultivars, 60 breeding lines, and 9 Vitis x Muscadinia hybrids (VM hybrids). Cluster length (CL) and width (CWI) characteristics exhibited slight differences among the population, with a range estimated at 7.1 and 4.6 cm, respectively. However, cluster weight (CWE), number of berries/cluster (N.B/C), and cluster compactness (CC) traits showed more diversity between individuals with a calculated range of 205.6 g, 32.6 B/C, and 24.1, respectively. Interestingly, all berry-related traits greatly varied between individuals, excluding the number of seeds/berry (N.S/B) character. The N.S/B trait displayed a narrow range of 5.6 seeds within the population. However, characters of berry length (BL), width (BWI), weight (BWE), the weight of seeds/berry (W.S/B), firmness (FF), and dry scar pattern (SP) demonstrated a wide estimated range of 21.2 mm, 21.7 mm, 25.4 g, 0.71 g, 0.21 N, and 82%, respectively. Normal distribution analysis for each trait suggested different distribution patterns extended between unimodal to multimodal behavior. Hierarchical mapping analysis was able to classify the population into several clades based on physical cluster- and berry-related attributes. The PCA suggested that hermaphroditic (perfect) flower structure is associated with compact clusters exhibiting small berries in size and weight (i.e., muscadine genotypes suitable for wine production). However, female flower structure is associated with clusters displaying large berries in size and weight (i.e., muscadine genotypes appropriate for fresh consumption). These patterns occurred independently of cluster size and weight characters. This research is the first study evaluating muscadine biometrics characters at a population level, providing valuable information for market demand and muscadine breeding programs.

The Middle Devonian lacustrine sediments of Orkney, off the northeast Scottish mainland, are composed largely of the Lower and Upper Stromness Formations and overlying Rousay Formation. These three formations have been subdivided and defined by vertebrate biostratigraphic biozones with recent division of the Rousay Formation into three further units based on characteristic fish fossils. The division of the Rousay Formation has enabled a map to be constructed of the solid geology of the island of Westray, Orkney, based on fish identification, detailed logging of sedimentary cycles throughout the Rousay succession, parameters of divisional boundaries, and a survey of faults marking sinistral transtensional movement parallel to the Great Glen Fault. Post-Carboniferous shortening and basin inversion led to uplift, folding and reactivation of normal faults as reverse faults, to form a positive strike-slip flower structure in Westray. A suite of Permian igneous dykes intruded across Orkney include three minor offshoots in Westray. The resulting map is the first to make use of biostratigraphic units within the Rousay Flagstone which are now regarded as Members.

Plant-pollinator interactions significantly influence reproductive success (RS) and drive the evolution of pollination syndromes. In the context of RS, mainly the role of flower morphology is touched. The importance of nectar properties is less studied, despite its significance in pollination effectiveness. Therefore, the aim of this study was to test selection on flower morphology and nectar chemistry in the generalistic orchid Neottia ovata. In 2019–2020, we measured three floral displays and six flower traits, pollinaria removal (PR), female reproductive success (FRS), and determined the soil properties. The sugars and amino acids (AAs) were analyzed using the HPLC method. Data were analyzed using multiple statistical methods (boxplots, ternary plot, one-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test, and PCA). Variation of flower structure and nectar chemistry and their weak correlation with RS confirms the generalistic character of N. ovata. In particular populations, different traits were under selection. PR was high and similar in all populations in both years, while FRS was lower and varied among populations. Nectar was dominated by glucose, fructose, and included 28 AAs (Ala and Glu have the highest content). Sugars and AAs influenced mainly FRS. Among soil parameters, carbon and carbon:nitrogen ratio seems to be the most important in shaping flower structure and nectar chemistry.
