BACKGROUD: Reliable scapular upward rotation and anterior-posterior tilt data are required for patients with subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS). Only a few studies have explored the reliability of such measurements derived using a modified inclinometer. OBJECTIVES: To determine the relative and absolute reliability of scapular upward rotation and anterior-posterior tilt measurements derived using a modified digital inclinometer in patients with SIS. METHOD: Seventeen SIS patients were assessed twice within 1 week. We determined the relative and absolute measurement reliability by calculating the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), and minimal clinically important difference (MCID). Both intra- and interrater reliability were determined. RESULTS: The intra-rater reliability (both measurements) was high (0.72–0.88), and the interrater ICC was high to excellent (0.72–0.98). Clinically acceptable SEM and MCID values were obtained for scapular upward rotation (SEM: 4.28–9.33∘, MCID: 5.1–11.3∘) and anterior-posterior tilt (SEM: 3.72–7.55∘, MCID: 2.5–10.8∘). CONCLUSIONS: Measurements of scapular upward rotation and anterior-posterior tilt using a modified digital inclinometer reliably reveal scapular position and kinematics in patients with SIS.

Abstract The development and use of new thermal insulation products in many industrial sectors, ranging from building insulations to power generation or satellite applications, requires the accurate knowledge of the radiative properties of the investigated material, i. e. its emissivity. A major objective of the research project “Improvement of emissivity measurements on reflective insulation materials” within the framework of the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research was to improve and validate reference techniques for the measurement of the total hemispherical emissivity of low emissivity foils with an absolute measurement uncertainty below 0.03. The calibration and measurement procedures developed within this project shall lead to a significant benefit for industrial manufacturers of reflective foils as well as for the end-users of the industrial instruments used to characterize them.

AbstractThe automotive industry is turning to advanced high strength steels (AHSS) to reduce vehicle weight and increase fuel efficiency. However, the zinc coating on AHSS can cause liquid metal embrittlement (LME) cracking during resistance spot welding. To understand the problem, the severity of the cracking must be measured. Typically, this is done from the weld cross-section. Currently, there is no standard procedure to determine which plane through the weld must be examined to gauge cracking severity, leading to a variety of practices for choosing a cutting plane. This work compares the magnitude and variability of LME severity measured from the plane of exhibiting the most severe surface cracking to arbitrarily chosen planes. The plane exhibiting the most severe cracks had more and longer cracks on the cross-section than the arbitrarily chosen plane, resulting in a higher crack severity measurement. This higher absolute measurement increased the relative accuracy of the examination, allowing for fewer welds to be examined to precisely determine the effect of LME mitigation methods on cracking severity, how welding parameters affect LME cracking severity and the predicted LME affected strength of a particular weld.
