Approximate field measures for ionic polymer-metal composite Materials and a simplified Order-of-magnitude actuator model

Abstract As the field of soft robotics grows and new applications for this technology are discovered, the use of simplified models for the soft actuators found in these devices will be critical. In this study we explore arguments based on the magnitude of field gradients that arise in the ionic polymer-metal composite under large applied voltages and their use for approximating measures of the fields inside the polymer. Using the order-of-magnitude based arguments provides exceptional results for quantifying the field measures of maximum ionic concentration and electric potential within the bulk of the polymer. These measures are leveraged to reconstruct the fields themselves in such a way that the internal bending moments generated inside the actuator may be approximated. With the internal moments, a simplified kinematic model may be used to formulate the steady-state actuator response of the IPMC. This actuator model shows a great deal of accuracy as compared to a full multiphysics model, and we discuss the prospects for future development of this model to account for dynamic actuation.

Unlike well-investigated polymer-based soft actuators such as gel, Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite, conducting polymer, a CFRP-based polymeric laminate possesses quite distinguished properties. It was previously reported that a CFRP-PVC laminate exhibited two-way deflection in accordance with environmental temperature, but it was asymmetric deflection due to the asymmetric laminate structure. In this study, we successfully fabricated a new CFRP-based polymeric laminate which can exhibit symmetric deflection. Despite such a successful outcome, there was large room to improve the degree of its deflection. Improvement of temperature control method for the newly fabricated CFRP-based polymeric laminate resulted in enhancement of the degree of its deflection.

Biomimetic is the field of engineering in which biological creatures and their functions are investigated and are used as the basis for the design and manufacturing of machines. Ionic Polymer Metal Composite (IPMC) is a smart material which has demonstrated a meaningful bending and tip force after the application of a low voltage. It is light-weighted, flexible, easily actuated, multi-directional applicable and requires simple manufacturing. Resultantly, IPMC has attracted scientists and researchers to analyze it further and consider it for any industrial and biomimetic applications. Presently, the research on IPMC is bi-directional oriented. A few groups of researchers are busy to find out the causes for the weaknesses of the material and to find out any remedy for them. The second class of scientists is exploring new areas of applications where IPMC material can be used. Although, the application zone of IPMC is ranging from micropumps diaphragms to surgical holding devices, this paper provides an overview of the IPMC application in biomimetic and biomedical field.
