Performance Monitoring of the Barrel Time-of-Flight Supermodule for the PANDA Experiment at FAIR

Abstract The PANDA experiment at FAIR in Darmstadt will use proton-antiproton collisions, with momenta ranging from 1.5 GeV/c to 15 GeV/c, on a fixed target to study open questions in hadron physics. The Barrel Time-of-Flight detector for this experiment is a scintillating tile hodoscope based on 16 identical and independent subdetectors called Super-Modules arranged in a cylindrical configuration. We have conducted performance studies on one such Super-Module to prove the feasibility of the Barrel Time-of-Flight detector design. Time resolution, signal delay and amplitude drop along the length of the detector were measured and analyzed as a function of the position on the individual scintillator tiles. A time resolution of about 50 ps has been achieved, which is very important for event timing and particle identification.

Abstract ND280 is a near detector of the T2K experiment which is located in the J-PARC accelerator complex in Japan. After a decade of fruitful data-taking, ND280 is scheduled for upgrade. The time-of-flight (ToF) detector, which is described in this article, is one of three new detectors that will be installed in the basket of ND280. The ToF detector has a modular structure. Each module represents an array of 20 plastic scintillator bars which are stacked in a plane of 2.4 × 2.2 m2 area. Six modules of similar construction will be assembled in a cube, thus providing an almost 4π enclosure for an active neutrino target and two TPCs. The light emitted by scintillator is absorbed by arrays of large-area silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs) which are attached to both ends of every bar. The readout of SiPMs, shaping and analog sum of individual SiPM signals within the array are performed by a discrete circuit amplifier. An average time resolution of about 0.14 ns is achieved for a single bar when measured with cosmic muons. The detector will be installed in the basket of ND280, where it will be used to veto particle originating outside the neutrino target, improve the particle identification and provide a cosmic trigger for calibration of detectors which are enclosed inside it.

AbstractConsiderable progress has been made over the past years to better understand the genetic nature and pathophysiology of brain AVM. For the actual review, a PubMed search was carried out regarding the embryology, inflammation, advanced imaging, and fluid dynamical modeling of brain AVM. Whole-genome sequencing clarified the genetic origin of sporadic and familial AVM to a large degree, although some open questions remain. Advanced MRI and DSA techniques allow for better segmentation of feeding arteries, nidus, and draining veins, as well as the deduction of hemodynamic parameters such as flow and pressure in the individual AVM compartments. Nonetheless, complete modeling of the intranidal flow structure by computed fluid dynamics (CFD) is not possible so far. Substantial progress has been made towards understanding the embryology of brain AVM. In contrast to arterial aneurysms, complete modeling of the intranidal flow and a thorough understanding of the mechanical properties of the AVM nidus are still lacking at the present time.

Abstract In recent years, interest in the psychology of fake news has rapidly increased. We outline the various interventions within psychological science aimed at countering the spread of fake news and misinformation online, focusing primarily on corrective (debunking) and pre-emptive (prebunking) approaches. We also offer a research agenda of open questions within the field of psychological science that relate to how and why fake news spreads and how best to counter it: the longevity of intervention effectiveness; the role of sources and source credibility; whether the sharing of fake news is best explained by the motivated cognition or the inattention accounts; and the complexities of developing psychometrically validated instruments to measure how interventions affect susceptibility to fake news at the individual level.

Small-angle scattering methods have become routine techniques for the structural characterization of macromolecules and macromolecular assemblies like polymers, (block) copolymers or micelles in the spatial range from a few to hundreds of nanometres. Neutrons are valuable scattering probes, because they offer freedom with respect to scattering length density contrast and isotopic labelling of samples. In order to gain maximum benefit from the allotted experiment time, the instrumental setup must be optimized in terms of statistics of scattered intensity, resolution and accessible range in momentum transferQ. The new small-angle neutron scattering instrument V16/VSANS at the Helmholtz-Zentrum in Berlin, Germany, augments neutron guide collimation and pinhole optics with time-of-flight data recording and flexible chopper configuration. Thus, the availableQrange and the respective instrumental resolution in the intermediate and high momentum transfer regions can be adjusted and balanced to the individual experimental requirements. This renders V16/VSANS a flexible and versatile instrument for soft-matter research.

This article probes into the performative dimensions embedded in Arnold Van Gennep’s book Les rites de passage. Focusing on the tripartite structure of Van Gennep’s ritual scheme, I argue that its current reigning interpretations underestimate what “Performance Studies” heightens: not the ritual and its consequences, but the dynamic passage—the durational procession—delineates the affiliation of the individual to society and outlines the transformative actions a community must undergo in order to secure its survival through time. Thus, rather than focusing on liminality as the pivot of rites of passage, this article addresses the agency of the passage between the three phases of Van Gennep’s ritual model. I offer three central dimensions essential to Performance Studies, through which performativity in Les rites de passage is re-examined: the incursion of the fictional into the social sphere, compulsive repetition, and embodied dynamics are inextricably interrelated dimensions of the processual formation of a tightly knit community through rituals.
