Cost-effectiveness, food utilization and proximate composition of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings fed locally formulated (sinking) and commercial (floating) diets in tarpaulin tanks were observed for 56 days. Ninety (90) C. gariepinus fingerlings with initial mean weight (72.99 g ± 3.09) per treatment were observed during the period with three replicates at a stocking density of 15 fish per m2. The fish were fed 5% body weight three times daily. Results showed that C. gariepinus fingerlings fed floating diet had significantly lower (p<0.05) feed conversion ratio (0.83 ± 0.03) than sinking diet (3.23 ± 0.40). Protein efficiency ratio was significantly (p<0.05) higher in fish fed commercial diet (2.69 ± 0.09) than locally formulated (0.80 ± 0.11). Specific growth rate was significantly (p<0.05) higher in floating (3.29 ± 0.07) than sinking diet (0.97 ± 0.20). Incidence cost was lower (₦1,989.65) in fish fed commercial diet than locally formulated (₦3,819.63). The profit index was higher in C. gariepinus fed floating diet (0.74) than sinking (0.19). From these findings, floating (commercial) feed is recommended for feeding C. gariepinus fingerlings since it showed better food utilization, better proximate composition of the carcass, higher profit index and consequently lower incidence cost.Keywords: Clarias gariepinus, cost-effectiveness, sinking feed, floating feed, incidence cost.

Maize cultivation is the one the major farm activities among Nepalese farmers. Basically, in the rural hills of Nepal like Okhaldhunga, it dominates any other crop production. The study was conducted for comparative assessment of economics, marketing and identification of major problems of maize seed and grain production in the hilly eastern district, Okhaldhunga during June of 2017. The data were obtained through the interview of 66 producers (33 each of maize grain and seed producers) with a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and parametric tests (-test, t-test) were applied. Both the grain and the seed producers were similar in terms of socio-demographic characteristics, marketing accessibilities but the seed producers were significantly benefited from the training, the extension services, credit facilities despite having 0.14 ha lesser landholding than grain producers. The inputs (manures, fertilizers and the seed) contributed 48% and 50% of the total cost incurred for grain and seed production respectively and the pre-sowing and sowing activities contributed more than 77% of cost in both cases. Despite higher cost for seed production (NRs. 24,969 more than grain production), the benefit-cost ratio of seed production was found higher (1.31) than grain production (1.05). Only 24% of the total harvest was processed and marketed as seed and using optimum quantity (66% middle portion of the cob) for seed production could further increase the income by 23.35%, the improved B:C ratio being 1.51 . The major production problems were scarce farm labor followed by lack of infrastructures while low seasonal price followed by low volume of production ranked the first and second most important marketing related problems.

The biofloc technology can control water quality under negligible water exchange. The aim of this study was to evaluate the  effects of stocking density on production and blood performance of catfish (Clarias gariepinus [Burchell, 1822]). The catfish were reared in biofloc system (heterotrophic bacteria and addition of sugar for a period of 10 wk and used three levels of density i.e. (500, 1 000, and 1 500) fish per m2. The production increased with the increasing of stocking density, relative growth rate decreased with the increasing of that. The stocking density of 1 500 fish per m2 on the biofloc technology can support maximum catfish production, health and proper water quality.

Potentials and prospects of pond fish farming in improving aquaculture system in Kaliakair upazila under Gazipur district, Bangladesh were investigated. Data were collected from 60 selected fish farmers through questionnaire survey and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) during June to November, 2014. The research revealed that a highest number of pond fish farmers (61.67%) were out of training facilities and a good portion (23.33%) had no education. Pond water was found turbid seasonally (71.66%) and farmers did not exchange water during culture periods (66.67%). As a result water quality deteriorates day by day and depletion of oxygen occurs during pond farming. The average stocking density of fish was higher in the study area and the highest was found in monoculture of Climbing perch (Anabas testudineus ) (1200 individual/decimal) and lowest in carp polyculture system (195 individual/decimal). Fish production was higher in Pangus monoculture system (17.89 MT/ha/yr) and lower in Climbing perch monoculture system (10.78 MT/ha/yr), but profit was higher in Climbing perch monoculture produced 1318100 Tk./ha/yr and lower in Tilapia monoculture 397886 Tk./ha/yr. Benefit Cost Ratio was higher in Climbing perch (2.32) and lower in Pangus culture (1.34). The problems faced by the fish farmers were broadly categorized as financial, natural, technical and social. Therefore, necessary training facilities with institutional and organizational supports, credit facilities, extension services and awareness development are essential to improve aquaculture system as well as the fishers’ livelihoods in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur district.Res. The study was conducted with three catagories of seed producers, namely BADC farms at Dattanagar, Jhenaidah and Tabunia, Pabna as public agency, LAL TEER Seed Company in Lalmonirhat district as private company and BRAC farm in Bogra district as NGO during Rabi season of 2007-08 to know the present status and profitability of hybrid maize seed production. A total of 60 hybrid maize seed contract growers and 120 maize (Non-seed) growers were selected randomly for the study. The cost of production was found higher for NGO (Tk. 66472/ha) than the public agency (64836/ha) and private company (Tk. 59352/ha). The yield of hybrid seed was highest under NGO (3780 kg/ha) than that of public agency and private company. Net return of hybrid seed production for contract growers was higher under public agency (Tk. 78204/ha) compared to private company (Tk. 39088/ha) and NGO (Tk. 33246/ha). Benefit cost ratio (BCR) was higher for the contract growers of public agency (2.21) Net return of hybrid maize seed production was 50% higher than that of non-seed production. An experiment was conducted to develop a culture system for producing brackishwater shrimp, Penaeus monodon, at a management strategy affordable for marginal to medium farmers. Shrimp was produced by two cropping patterns viz., short cycle (60 days) double crops and long cycle (120 days) single crop each at three stocking densities viz., 3, 5, 7 nos./m2. The analysis of results revealed that production of shrimp of 913.57 - 1429.38 kg/ha in long cycle single crop was higher than that of 804.42 - 1296.87 kg/ha in aggregate of short cycle double crops at 3 - 5 nos./m2 density, but at 7 nos./m2 density, production of shrimp of 1899.39 kg/ha was higher in short cycle double crops than that of 1857.31 kg/ha in long cycle single crop. The differences in production between two cropping patterns at different densities were not significant. Gross margin was higher in high stocking ponds in both short and long cycle cropping pattern and it was 1.75 - 2.24 times higher in long cycle culture than that short cycle culture. However, considering higher benefit cost ratio and requirement of supply of oxygen for the production management, it can be surmised that production of shrimp in short cycle double crops at 5 nos./m2 densities will be better affordable for marginal to medium farmers having limited resource.Bangladesh J.
