Cost-effectiveness, food utilization and proximate composition of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings fed locally formulated (sinking) and commercial (floating) diets in tarpaulin tanks were observed for 56 days. Ninety (90) C. gariepinus fingerlings with initial mean weight (72.99 g ± 3.09) per treatment were observed during the period with three replicates at a stocking density of 15 fish per m2. The fish were fed 5% body weight three times daily. Results showed that C. gariepinus fingerlings fed floating diet had significantly lower (p<0.05) feed conversion ratio (0.83 ± 0.03) than sinking diet (3.23 ± 0.40). Protein efficiency ratio was significantly (p<0.05) higher in fish fed commercial diet (2.69 ± 0.09) than locally formulated (0.80 ± 0.11). Specific growth rate was significantly (p<0.05) higher in floating (3.29 ± 0.07) than sinking diet (0.97 ± 0.20). Incidence cost was lower (₦1,989.65) in fish fed commercial diet than locally formulated (₦3,819.63). The profit index was higher in C. gariepinus fed floating diet (0.74) than sinking (0.19). From these findings, floating (commercial) feed is recommended for feeding C. gariepinus fingerlings since it showed better food utilization, better proximate composition of the carcass, higher profit index and consequently lower incidence cost.Keywords: Clarias gariepinus, cost-effectiveness, sinking feed, floating feed, incidence cost.

The biofloc technology can control water quality under negligible water exchange. The aim of this study was to evaluate the  effects of stocking density on production and blood performance of catfish (Clarias gariepinus [Burchell, 1822]). The catfish were reared in biofloc system (heterotrophic bacteria and addition of sugar for a period of 10 wk and used three levels of density i.e. (500, 1 000, and 1 500) fish per m2. The production increased with the increasing of stocking density, relative growth rate decreased with the increasing of that. The stocking density of 1 500 fish per m2 on the biofloc technology can support maximum catfish production, health and proper water quality.

. Antibacterial proteins/peptides are important parts of the innate immune system in Clarias gariepinus. To examine potential antibacterial proteins/peptides in organs and mucus of C. gariepinus, crude protein/peptide extracts were isolated with ammonium sulfate precipitation from mucus, skin, gill, suprabranchial organ and intestine. Following further extraction using Sephadex G-50 gel filtration chromatography, the proteins/peptides associated with two absorption peaks (AP1 and AP2) were pooled, respectively, and assayed for their antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli, Aeromonas hydrophila and Edwardsiella tarda. The results showed that AP1 and AP2 from all the sampled tissues and mucus at concentration of 100 mg mL-1 exhibited antibacterial activity against the tested bacterial strains. Differences in antibacterial activity were observed among sample extracts. The protein profiles of AP1 obtained by Tricine-SDS-PAGE gel showed a broad range of peptides/proteins, and molecular weight of the mutual abundant peptide obtained was about 27 kDa. Antibacterial activity of AP2 extracted from intestine was due to peptide with molecular weight of 5.5 kDa.

Monoculture is the rearing of single species of fish in a pond while polyculture is the farming of two or more species in the same physical space. This study aims to compare the growth parameters of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings in monoculture and polyculture, using concrete and earthen ponds in a randomized complete block design. The polyculture, comprised of Clarias gariepinus and Oreochromis niloticus. 480 fingerlings were used; the stocking density was 40fish in a 3x2x1.5m depth with initial weight (4.84±0.11547) for C. gariepinus in monoculture and 40 each in polyculture with an initial pooled weight of O. niloticus (50g) replicated thrice, it was fed for eight weeks with commercial feed (40% crude protein). Weekly, random sampling was done to measure the growth and adjust the feeding rate. The results revealed that polyculture has the best mean final weight (160.07±0.18559g) and weight gain of 155.29, while the highest total length (45.666±3.179) was recorded in monoculture for Clarias gariepinus reared in an earthen pond. The polyculture had the highest specific growth rate (2.46), Relative growth rate (246.49), and condition factor (0.184). There was a significant difference (P<0.05) in monoculture of both concrete and earthen ponds.
