Based on the current methods of damage detection, a new detection damage model was proposed in order to search a more efficient detection method for reinforced concrete high-rise building damage induced by earthquake. This model is based on the regularity of change in the damping ratio of high-rise buildings, and the high order modes, mode participation coefficient and measure method of natural frequency, together with the type of structures, are taken into account in the model. The shaking test results for a model of reinforced concrete high-rise buildings show that the damage detection results based on the proposed model are close to the test results.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a systematic approach for the evaluation and selection of curtain wall systems for medium-high rise building construction. Design/methodology/approach – The authors have identified the different types of curtain wall systems that are commonly used in the building construction industry in Saudi Arabia; examined the various performance as well as financial and non-financial criteria affecting the evaluation and selection of these systems; and subjected the identified different types of curtain wall systems to several filtering processes, namely feasibility ranking, evaluation by comparison and weighted evaluation to facilitate making a decision on the most suitable system to select. Findings – The analysis of the collected data indicated that the precast concrete curtain wall system is considered to be the first choice. The second choice is the prefabricated brick panel curtain wall system. Originality/value – Curtain walls are the most recognized elements of contemporary structures today. There exists ample variety of materials and designs that could be utilized for the development of these building elements. This paper is of practical value to project owners, architects and design professionals endeavoring on the process of selecting and specifying curtain wall systems in their projects.

Buildings are generally designed to withstand against gravity load for expected life and resist extent of lateral loads by satisfying the codal provision. Main objective of structural elements is to transfer the load safely to the ground, which depends on structural system adopted. Generally, structural system can be adopted depending on the demand of client/building needs/use of structure, environmental condition, performance optimization, economic condition etc. For high rise building moment resisting frame system, structural wall systems, dual system, flat slab-structural wall systems can be employed. A residential ground with ten upper floors high rise building situated in zone-III has been taken under reference, where MRF with RC structural wall system is used. Structural parameters are compared in the study for various location and orientation of RC wall. Linear static and dynamic analysis is performed on the structure based on the IS 1893 Part-I on ETABS software.
