LOPES, M. A. A.SALINE WATER AND SUBSTRATES ON INITIAL GROWTH IN MELON  2 ABSTRACT The aim was to study the production of melon seedlings for different substrates irrigated with saline water. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in the city of Pombal, Paraíba, PB, in the period April-May 2015. We adopted a completely randomized design in a factorial 4 x 3 x 2 design, consisting of four levels of irrigation water salinity (0.3, 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 dS m-1) and three substrates [S1= ground; S2= soil + organic compound (2:1); and S3= soil + manure (2:1)] , and two varieties of melon (V1 = Gaúcho Casca de Carvalho; V2 = Hales Best Jumbo), with four replications and three plants per repetition. Plants were kept in containers with a capacity of 0.5 dm3 for 32 days after sowing, when they were evaluated for growth and accumulation of dry matter. Growth and dry matter accumulation of both varieties were reduced with increasing irrigation water salinity. The growth and accumulation of dry mass of the Hales Best Jumbo variety in the substrate composed of soil with organic compost was less affected by salt stress. The Gaúcho Casca de Carvalho variety is the most sensitive to salt stress regardless of the substrate used. Keywords: Cucumis melo L., salt stress, organic compound

The effects of boron and effluent (treated sewage water) on vegetative growth, fruit yield, and boron uptake of grafted and nongrafted melons (Cucumis melo L. cv. Arava) were studied. Nongrafted melon plants and melon plants grafted onto the commercial Cucurbita maxima Duchesne × Cucurbita moschata Duchesne rootstock ‘TZ-148’ were grown in pots filled with perlite in a heated greenhouse and were irrigated with fresh water or effluent. The two irrigation waters contained boron in five concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 10.4 mg·L−1. The boron concentration in the plants increased linearly with that in the irrigation water. The highest boron concentrations were found in old leaves, the lowest in the fruit, and intermediate concentrations were noted in the roots. The boron concentrations were, in general, significantly lower in grafted than nongrafted plants, possibly because the root system of the former had higher selectivity and lower boron absorption than that of the latter. Fruit yield and dry weight accumulation in shoots and roots decreased linearly as the boron concentration in the irrigation water increased, the nongrafted plants were more sensitive than grafted ones to the boron level, and both were more sensitive under fresh water irrigation than under effluent irrigation. It is suggested that the higher boron sensitivity of the root systems of the nongrafted plants probably decreased their capability to absorb water and nutrients, which in turn sharply reduced their fruit yields.

UNITERMOS: pós-colheita, subsuperficial, Cucumis melo L.  D’ ALBUQUERQUE JÚNIOR, B. PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL QUALITY OF MELON FRUITS UNDER DIFFERENT SET OF CO2 APPLICATION THROUGH IRRIGATION WATER    2 ABSTRACT Melon is turning into a big business for the northeast of Brazilthat starts to stand out in the international scenery, although there has been a decrease in exportation in the last years.  It is known that in the last 100 years the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is increasing. Thinking about what that could represent for plants, in the last decades studies of CO2 application in plants through atmosphere and water have been intensified.  Increases were frequently observed in production growth under high CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere.  Studies with CO2  have become usual in melon production in order to make the cost/benefit relation viable, and to try to reduce the number of CO2 applications and volume per cultivated area, but keeping productivity when CO2  is applied during the whole cycle. The objective of this work was to study the effect of one single CO2 rate, applied at different crop stages through water by a subsurface drip irrigation system, under post harvest quality in net melon fruits cultivated in greenhouse. Results showed that CO2 application did not alter fruit quality (Brix and pH), but treatment 3 resulted in  smaller acidity. Obtained data showed that CO2 application through irrigation water for the fruiting (T3) and flowering (T1) treatments provided yield increases, respectively,  when compared to untreated (T4); the lowest yield increment was obtained by flowering plus fruiting T2  when compared to T4. KEYWORDS: post harvest, dripping, Cucumis melo L.

At the stage of water treatment for irrigation systems, the efficiency capture coarse and fine mechanical impurities, as well as oil products and organic compounds affects the reliability of the equipment of the irrigation network and the safety of energy exchange processes in irrigated agricultural landscapes. The violation of work irrigation system can cause disruptions in irrigation schedules of agricultural crops, crop shortages, degradation phenomena on the soil and ecological tension. For the combined irrigation system, a water treatment unit has been developed, representing a hydrocyclone apparatus with a pipe filter in the case. For the capacity of 250 m3/h the main geometrical dimensions of hydrocyclone have been calculated. To organize the capture petroleum products and organic compounds, it has been proposed a modernization of a hydrocyclone unit, consisting in dividing the cylindrical part of the apparatus into two section. The first is section is for input irrigation water, the second one is for additional drainage of clarified irrigation water after sorption purification by the filter, placed on the disk and installed coaxially with the drain pipe and the pipe filter.
