BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunction is one of the characteristics of schizophrenia traditionally experienced by elderly patients. In the past 25 years, studies have proven that the cognitive dysfunction is an early characteristic of this disease, besides introversion, drug abuse, suicidal behavior, and depressive symptoms. The mini-mental state examination is a test designed to identify functional and organic disorders in psychiatric patients. North Sumatera is often considered as “small Indonesia” due to the variety of tribes live in the province; therefore, a study in relation with the cognitive profile of patients with schizophrenia (PwS) is needed. AIM: We aimed to analyze cognitive function in PwS in the North Sumatera. METHODS: The study was a descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach of cognitive profile of PwS stressing in the age, sex, education, and illness duration of the patients. RESULTS: The results of the study using 200 subjects found that the most affected gender were male (62.5%), between the ages of 25–34 years (46%), with secondary school education background (55.5%), and with an illness duration >1 year (64.0%). The results showed that cognitive function in schizophrenic patients was probable cognitive dysfunction (56.5%). CONCLUSIONS: From the results of this study, it was found that the most affected subjects were men, between 25 and 34 years, with high school education, and the illness lasted more than 1 year. Most of the schizophrenic patients experienced probable cognitive dysfunction.

To investigate the effects of leisure activities on cognitive performance of healthy older subjects, an innovative intervention program was developed. Frequent participation in cognitively stimulating activities (i.e., reading, playing chess, or playing music) is associated with reduced risk of dementia. AKTIVA (active cognitive stimulation – prevention in the elderly) is an intervention program designed to enhance cognitive stimulation in everyday life by increasing cognitive stimulating leisure activities. The present study determines the effects of AKTIVA on cognitive function, mood and attitude toward aging in a sample of older participants from the general population. Several measurement instruments were used including the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS-Cog), the Trail-Making Test (TMT), and the Memory Complaint Questionnaire (MAC-Q). Initially, the sample consisted of 307 older persons (170 female, 72 ± 7 years). The intervention was evaluated with a randomized, controlled pre-post follow-up design. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: AKTIVA intervention (n = 126), AKTIVA intervention plus nutrition and exercise counseling (n = 84), no-intervention control group (n = 97). The AKTIVA intervention consisted of 8 weekly sessions and two booster sessions after a break of 4 months. Participation in the group program resulted in positive effects on cognitive function and attitude toward aging for subassembly groups. Older persons (≥ 75 years) showed enhanced speed of information processing (by TMT Version A) (F = 4.17*, p < .05); younger participants (< 75 years) showed an improvement in subjective memory decline (by MAC-Q) (F = 2.55*, p < .05). Additionally, AKTIVA enhanced the frequency of activities for leisure activities for subassembly groups. The results of this study suggest that the AKTIVA program can be used to increase cognitively stimulating leisure activities in the elderly. Further research is necessary to identify the long-term effects of this intervention particularly with respect to the prevention of dementia.

Abstract. Background: People who feel they have become a burden on others may become susceptible to suicidal ideation. When people no longer feel capable or productive, they may assume that friends and family members would be better off without them. Aim: The present study was designed to assess preliminary psychometric properties of a new measure, the Perceived Burdensomeness (PBS) Scale. Method: Depressed psychiatric patients (N = 173) were recruited from a veterans affairs medical center. Patients were assessed with a structured diagnostic interview and self-report measures assessing perceived burdensomeness, depression severity, hopelessness, and suicidal ideation. Results: The present study supported preliminary evidence of reliability and concurrent validity of the PBS. Additionally, perceived burdensomeness was significantly associated with higher levels of hopelessness and suicidal ideation. Conclusion: It is hoped that with the aid of the PBS clinicians may be able to intervene more specifically in the treatment of suicidality.
