Abstract Aim The Postgraduate Virtual Learning Environment (PGVLE) is a digital platform developed by HEEWM in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to deliver a virtual teaching programme to surgical trainees. The programme is delivered through the BigBlueButton; an integrated virtual classroom. All teaching sessions are recorded and archived to allow trainees to review content at their convenience. We performed a contemporaneous study to review the effectiveness and quality of the platform in delivering teaching and suggest its future role in the surgical curriculum. Method Anonymised feedback was gathered of trainee’s perspective of the platform experience, the quality of teaching and the archived content. All trainees were General Surgery higher trainees (HST) (ST3-ST8). The data from sequential teaching days was analysed. Results Of 90 HST, on average 40 attended each monthly training day (consistent with pre-COVID attendance). 122 trainee responses were completed. 68% of respondents were between ST3-ST5. 91% rated the administration and delivery of the teaching sessions as excellent or very good. 16% of trainees watched the archived sessions after the teaching day of which 46% felt it met their educational expectations. Conclusions The PGVLE is an effective platform for the delivery of a virtual surgical teaching programme. It met with high levels of trainee satisfaction in the context of the pandemic. The archived content provides advantages to consolidation of learning. It is thought that the PGVLE platform will become a key feature of the surgical training programme in a hybrid learning model, related to relevant curricula, in the future.

Palavras-chave: Educação a distância e tutoria. Student engagement is intrinsically linked to two important metrics in learning: student satisfaction and the quality of the student experience. One of the ways that engagement can be influenced is through careful curriculum design. Using the knowledge that many students are ‘assessment-driven’, a low-stakes continuous weekly summative e-assessment was introduced to a module. The impact this had on student engagement was measured by studying student activity within the module virtual learning environment. It was found that introduction of the e-assessments led to a significant increase in virtual learning environment activity compared to the virtual learning environment activity in that module the previous year, and also compared to the virtual learning environment activity of two other modules studied by the same student cohort. As many institutions move towards greater blended or online deliveries, it will become more important to ensure that virtual learning environments encourage high levels of student engagement in order to maintain or enhance the student experience.

It has become an urgent problem to be solved for the education world to strengthen cultural education, transmit and develop excellent regional culture and enhance cultural quality of middle school students and the new generation. In the traditional Web-based learning environments used for transmitting regional cultures, there is not strong immersion, flexible interaction methods, interests and entertainments. In response, the basics of the cone of experience and constructivism learning theory are analyzed, a virtual learning environment about Yiwu regional culture is designed, and the system model, framework and the realization processes of key parts are stated.

This paper evaluates associations across the dimensions included in students’ surveys and virtual activities for applying educational models within e-learning graduate programs. Firstly, we focus on the outcomes derived from teachers’ and students’ participation in virtual classroom forums and, secondly, on the determinants of students’ satisfaction in the graduate program. Data analyses show that teachers’ and students’ participation in forums as dynamic educational activities are positively correlated with students’ general satisfaction. To study the determinants of students’ satisfaction, we perform a regression analysis that considers as explanatory variables educational planning, teaching qualifications and development of learning, as well as of a number of controls related to the virtual learning environment and participation in the academic program. According to the obtained results, teaching skills and learning environments are associated with higher students’ satisfaction in a virtual learning environment. This type of analysis is of great interest in a social environment characterized by increasing communication via electronic networking. We find that dynamic educational activities and dimensions taken on board on students’ surveys are related to students’ satisfaction in e-learning graduate programs.

Purpose Cloud computing technology is advancing and expanding at an explosive rate. These advancements have further extended the capabilities of the virtual learning environment (VLE) to provide accessibility anywhere, anytime where educational resources can be saved, modified, retrieved and shared on the cloud. The purpose of this paper is to examine the predictors of instructional effectiveness of cloud computing VLE by extending the Self Determination and Channel Expansion Theory with external constructs of VLE interactivity, content design, school support, trust in website, knowledge sharing attitude and demographic variables. Design/methodology/approach Random sampling data were collected in two waves of nation-wide survey and analyzed with artificial neural network approach. Findings SDT, CET, content design, interactivity, trust in website, school support and demographics significantly predict instructional effectiveness. Research limitations/implications The study has provided a new paradigm shift from investigating the behavioral intention and continuance intention to the effectiveness of an information system. It advocates that quality of research may be improved by adhering to the basic research methodology starting from rigorous instrument development and validation to future research direction. Practical implications The research provides implications to Ministry of Education, the VLE content and service providers, scholars and practitioners. Social implications The findings of the study may further improve the quality of living of the society when the instructional effectiveness of the cloud-based VLE is further enhanced. Originality/value Existing grid computing VLE studies have focussed on the acceptance of students and teachers and not its instructional effectiveness. Unlike existing studies that examined extrinsic motivational factors (e.g. TAM, UTAUT), this study uses intrinsic motivational factors (e.g. relatedness, competence and autonomy) as well as perceived media richness. Malaysia is the first nation to implement the VLE at a national scale and the findings from this study will provide a new insight on the determinants of instructional effectiveness of the VLE system.

A virtual learning environment is conceived as an interaction space that ease the realization of mediated activities by technology, in this case the internet; besides using multimedia materials, learning objects, social networks, among others; which have changed imminently the traditional education. In this article an instrument is proposed in a checklist format, to evaluate any platform that has interaction spaces such as a Virtual Learning Environment, in this case responding to four spaces or general indicators: information Space, Mediation / Interaction Space, Instructional Design Space and Exhibition Space. Criteria are used according to the interactions and activities carried out by the consultant and virtual student. These, in turn, come up from the analysis and interaction of the advisers achieved in the discussion forums and portfolio activities through collaborative work. It was situated as a qualitative research, with a descriptive nature since it is not limited to data collection only, but also it refers and analyzes the interaction of the advisers achieved in the discussion forums and portfolio activities through the collaborative work of the workshop course "Virtual Learning Environments" developed in a virtual learning environment.
