Abstract Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted research activities. Large international research collaboratives have successfully produced high quality COVID-related research. We aimed to investigate factors that influence trainee engagement in collaborative research and quantify engagement in our local area to propose methods to ensure all trainees have the opportunity to take part in impactful research. Methods This is a mixed methods study consisting of a survey to trainees regarding their experiences in research and an assessment of engagement in COVID-related research. The survey was circulated to undergraduates and trainees of all grades in February 2020. Results Engagement with the survey was poor, with a < 10% return rate. 43% of respondents stated that they had no experience of research. Engagement with collaborative research was popular, with responders declaring involvement with at least 7 other collaboratives. Reasons for participating in research were improving patient care (23%), producing high quality research (19%) and CV building (19%). Barriers included perceived lack of time (23%) and lack of knowledge about research (23%). The CASSH collaborative co-ordinated the local response to COVIDSurg, COVIDSurg|Cancer and the COVER study, involving 20 trainees contributing data on 368 patients. Conclusions All research collaboratives rely on the enthusiasm of participants in order to succeed. We have presented some of the motivators and barriers to participation in our region and outlined how we have built on national projects to improve engagement on a local level. Further projects are planned to capitalise on this improved engagement.

This study analyzes the patterns of university co-authorship networks in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. It also examines the quality and subject distribution of co-authored articles within these networks. Social network analysis is used to outline the structure and evolution of the networks that have produced co-authored articles at universities in the Greater Bay Area from 2014 to 2018, at both regional and institutional levels. Field-weighted citation impact (FWCI) is used to analyze the quality and citation impact of co-authored articles in different subject fields. The findings of the study reveal that university co-authorship networks in the Greater Bay Area are still dispersed, and their disciplinary development is unbalanced. The study also finds that, while the research areas covered by high-quality co-authored articles fit the strategic needs of technological innovation and industrial distribution in the Greater Bay Area, high-quality research collaboration in the humanities and social sciences is insufficient.

Abstract Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has severely impacted the Italian healthcare system, underscoring a dramatic shortage of specialized doctors in many disciplines. The situation affected the activity of the residents in neurology, who were also offered the possibility of being formally hired before their training completion. Aims (1) To showcase examples of clinical and research activity of residents in neurology during the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy and (2) to illustrate the point of view of Italian residents in neurology about the possibility of being hired before the completion of their residency program. Results Real-life reports from several areas in Lombardia—one of the Italian regions more affected by COVID-19—show that residents in neurology gave an outstanding demonstration of generosity, collaboration, reliability, and adaptation to the changing environment, while continuing their clinical training and research activities. A very small minority of the residents participated in the dedicated selections for being hired before completion of their training program. The large majority of them prioritized their training over the option of earlier employment. Conclusions Italian residents in neurology generously contributed to the healthcare management of the COVID-19 pandemic in many ways, while remaining determined to pursue their training. Neurology is a rapidly evolving clinical field due to continuous diagnostic and therapeutic progress. Stakeholders need to listen to the strong message conveyed by our residents in neurology and endeavor to provide them with the most adequate training, to ensure high quality of care and excellence in research in the future.

Organic chemistry education is one of the youngest research areas among all chemistry related research efforts, and its published scholarly work has become vibrant and diverse over the last 15 years. Research on problem-solving behavior, students' use of the arrow-pushing formalism, the investigation of students' conceptual knowledge and their cognitive skills have shaped our understanding of college students' understanding in organic chemistry classes. This review provides an overview of research efforts focusing on student's perspectives and summarizes the main results and pending questions that may guide subsequent research activities.

Abstract Background Surgeons are frequently compared in terms of their publication activity to members of other disciplines who publish in journals with naturally higher impact factors. The time intensity of daily clinical duties in surgery is yet not comparable to that of these competitor disciplines. Purpose Here, we aimed to critically comment on ways for improving the academic productivity of university surgerons. Conclusions To ensure high-quality science in surgery, it is imperative that surgeons actively ask for and generate the time for high-quality research. This necessitates coordinated and combined efforts of leading university surgeons at the political level and effective presentation of the magnificent studies performed by young and talented university surgeons.
