AbstractWe report the oldest fossil condor (Vulturidae) from South America and the first from the Pisco Formation (14.0–2.0 Ma) of Peru, described herein as Perugyps diazi new genus and species. The Pisco Formation, exposed on the southern coast of Peru, has produced well-preserved and abundant marine and terrestrial vertebrate fossils from the late Miocene/early Pliocene (6.0–4.5 Ma) Montemar and Sacaco Sur localities, from where P. diazi was recovered. The new condor adds to our knowledge on the evolution and biogeographic distribution of New World vultures. The age of this new species supports the hypothesis that condors probably evolved in North America and entered South America by the late Miocene/early Pliocene. We believe it is likely that the first condors to reach South America probably did so via a coastal corridor along the western side of the Andes where they became part of the diverse coastal fauna in southern Peru.Un Nuevo Cóndor (Ciconiiformes, Vulturidae) del Mioceno Tardío-Plioceno Temprano de la Formación Pisco, PerúResumen. Se reporta el cóndor más antiguo de América del Sur y el primero para la Formación Pisco (14–2 Ma), y se describe como Perugyps diazi. De esta formación, situada en la costa sur del Perú, provienen gran cantidad de aves marinas en muy buen estado de conservación, en especial de los niveles Montemar y Sacaco Sur (Mioceno tardío/Plioceno temprano, 6.0–4.5 Ma), justamente de donde procede Perugyps. Este nuevo cóndor añade importante información sobre la evolución y distribución biogeográfica de estas aves, pues su edad apoya la hipótesis de que los cóndores probablemente evolucionaron en América del Norte y entraron a América del Sur entre el Mioceno tardío y el Plioceno temprano. Sugerimos que su llegada pudo realizarse por el corredor costero del lado occidental de los Andes, en donde pasaron a formar parte de la diversa fauna del sur del Perú.

A new genus and species of sloth ( Eionaletherium tanycnemius gen. et sp. nov.) recently collected from the Late Miocene Urumaco Formation, Venezuela (northern South America) is herein described based on a partial skeleton including associated femora and tibiae. In order to make a preliminary analysis of the phylogenetic affinities of this new sloth we performed a discriminate analysis based on several characters of the femur and tibia of selected Mylodontoidea and Megatherioidea sloths. The consensus tree produced indicates that the new sloth, E. tanycnemius , is a member of the Mylodontoidea. Surprisingly, the new taxon shows some enigmatic features among Neogene mylodontoid sloths, e.g. femur with a robust lesser trochanter that projects medially and the straight distinctly elongated tibia. The discovery of E. tanycnemius increases the diversity of sloths present in the Urumaco sequence to ten taxa. This taxon supports previous studies of the sloth assemblage from the Urumaco sequence as it further indicates that there are several sloth lineages present that are unknown from the better sampled areas of southern South America.

The new genus Herminespina comprises extinct South American species of “Thais”-like ocenebrine gastropods with prominent colabral folds and a labral spine. Geographic range extensions into Peru are reported for the late Pliocene H. mirabilis and the late Miocene to Pliocene H. philippii, both previously known only from Chile. A new early Pliocene species, H. saskiae, is described from the Sacaco Basin of southern Peru and compared with an early Miocene muricid from Peru and Chile, Acanthina katzi. Herminespina is one of several genera of Neogene muricids in western South America that bear labral spines.

A fragmentary specimen of pterosaur originally assigned to the genus Pterodaustro Bonaparte, 1970 is reassessed. The presence of a sagittal dorsal cranial crest on a fragment of nasopreorbital arcade with linear vertical trabeculae and the occurrence of alveolar protuberances on the os dentale indicate the new specimen has similarities with crested pterodactyloid pterosaurs of the family Ctenochasmatidae, and with members of the Dsungaripteridae. The presence of alveolar protuberances allows us to assign the specimen to the Dsungaripteridae. It forms the basis of a new genus and species, Domeykodactylus ceciliae.

Detailed investigation of the essentially complete uppermost Miocene through Lower Pleistocene sequence in Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Hole 603C, western North Atlantic, has revealed the presence of the new dinoflagellate cyst speciesLejeunecysta hatterasensis, Lejeunecysta interrupta, Corrudinium devernaliae, andPyxidinopsis vesiculata, as well as the acritarchsLeiosphaeridia rockhallensisHead new species andLeffingwellia costatanew genus and species. Independent magnetobiostratigraphic control of DSDP Hole 603C constrains the ranges of these new species.Lejeunecysta interruptan. sp. appears to range no higher than lowermost Pliocene at 5.2 Ma,Pyxidinopsis vesiculatan. sp. has a range top at about 4.5 Ma in the Lower Pliocene,Corrudinium devernaliaen. sp. has a well-defined range of 4.7–4.1 Ma within the Lower Pliocene, andLeiosphaeridia rockhallensisn. sp. has a similarly well-defined range of 4.4–3.9 Ma within the Lower Pliocene. The presence ofLeiosphaeridia rockhallensisn. sp. in the Ramsholt Member of the Coralline Crag Formation, eastern England, supports an Early Pliocene age for this member.

Germanostenolestes lutzi, new genus and species of Sieblosiidae is described from the Middle Miocene of Öhningen (Germany). It probably belongs to the clade (Paraoligolestes + (Parastenolestes (Germanolestes + Stenolestes))) sensu Nel et al. (2005). It is the third representative of the Sieblosiidae described from this outcrop, showing that this family was still quite diverse in the Middle-Late Miocene.

Selamorpha variegata gen. et sp. nov. is described from Coquimbo Region, Chile. It is characterized by the body dorsally saddle-shaped, brachypterous, tegmina with moderate reticulation, metope elongate, and terga caudally elevated. The new taxon is the second genus of Elicini in Chile and the third of South America. It was found associated with Calceolaria polifolia Hook. (Calceolariaceae).

Abstract A new genus and species of Molineinae (Nemata: Trichostrongyloidea) is described. It is similar to Molineus but differs in ray 4 being longest instead of shortest. In addition, a new species of Parastrongyloides is described that is characterized by a short digitiform appendix on the tail and spicule tips with fine points. It is the second species known with two morphotypes of the females. Resumen Se describe un nuevo género y especie de Molineinae (Nemata: Trichostrongyloidea). Es similar a Molineus pero difiere en que el rayo 4 es el más largo en lugar del más corto. Además, se describe una nueva especie de Parastrongyloides que se caracteriza por un apéndice digital breve en la cola y las puntas de las espículas con puntas finas. Es la segunda especie conocida con dos morfotipos de las hembras.
