Evaluation of the Color of Some Spanish Unifloral Honey Types as a Characterization Parameter

Abstract The color of 7 types of Spanish unifloral honey from rosemary, orange blossom, lavender, eucalyptus, sunflower, heather, and honeydew was Investigated for Its potential use as a characterization parameter. Colors were estimated by visual comparison with a Lovlbond 1000 Instrument, the readings of which were transformed Into Pfund units. As an alternative method, the transmittances of liquid samples at selected wavelengths were measured, trlstlmulus values were calculated, and chromatic coordinates In the CIE-1931 (x,y,L) and CIE-1976 (L*a*b*) color spaces were determined. The correlation coefficient between x and the Pfund grading was 0.958, but visual comparisons proved to be less objective and precise than CIE parameters; yet, analysis by visual comparison can be used by unskilled dealers and beekeepers because of Its great simplicity. A stepwise discriminant analysis revealed that CIE-1976 (L*a*b*) coordinates yield an overall proportion of accurately classified samples slightly better than that afforded by CIE-1931 coordinates (76 vs 71%). However, rosemary and lavender honeys were more accurately classed by using the CIE-1931 system. The results show that color determinations make a useful tool for helping to classify honeys.

The personality profile of successful prison warders. In an attempt to develop a personality profile for successful prison warders, scores on CattelFs 16-PF (SA92-form) were obtained from 361 warders employed by the South African Department of Correctional Services. Independent criterion information (tempo of promotion) was also obtained and used as indicator of job success. Using Hotelling's T2, it was found that the first order factor profiles of successful and unsuccessful warders differed significantly. There was no difference in their second order profiles. By means of stepwise discriminant analysis with personality as independent and success (expressed as a dichotomy) as the dependant variable, four first order factors were identified and formulae derived which predicted 14,8 better than chance whether a warder would be correctly classified as successful or not on the dichotomous success criterion. Abstract The aim of this study was to examine possible discriminant physical and physiological characteristics between elite male handball players from elite teams with different league rankings. Players from three teams (A, B and C), which competed in the first league of the Greek championship during the season 2011-2012 participated in the study. Team A finished first, B came second and C came eighth out of eleven clubs. Teams A and B also participated in European Cups, and team A won the European Challenge Cup. The players (n=44) were examined for anthropometric characteristics and performed a series of physical fitness tests. Players from teams A and B were taller (6.2 cm (0.7;11.7), mean difference (95% CI) and 9.2 cm (4.0;14.5), respectively), and had a higher amount of fat free mass (6.4 kg (1.1;11.8) and 5.4 kg (0.2;10.5)) compared to those of team C. Players from team A performed better than players from team C in the squat jump (5.5 cm (1.0;10.0)), the countermovement jump without (5.5 cm (0.4;10.6)) and with armswing (6.0 cm (0.7;11.3)) and in the 30 s Bosco test (5.7 W.kg-1 (1.2;10.2)). Also, players from team A outperformed team B in mean power during the Wingate anaerobic test (WAnT, 0.5 W.kg-1(0;0.9)) and in the Bosco test (7.8 W.kg-1 (3.4;12.2)). Overall, players from the best ranked team performed better than the lowest ranked team on WAnT, vertical jumps and the Bosco test. Stepwise discriminant analysis showed that stature and mean power during the Bosco test were the most important characteristics in TH players, accounting for 54.6% of the variance in team ranking. These findings indicate the contribution of particular physical fitness components (stature, fat free mass and anaerobic power) to excellence in TH. In addition, the use of the Bosco test as an assessment tool in talent identification and physical fitness monitoring in this sport is further recommended.

This work presents a study on the use of wood and plastic wastes generated in abundance in Merida, Mexico, to help to reduce them in order to mitigate environmental deterioration. The use of these wastes is proposed to obtain a low-cost building material. So, the escalation process (i.e., extrusion) at the pilot level to obtain a prototype of a wood–plastic composite (WPC) corrugated sheet to evaluate the technical feasibility to make a low-cost product is reported. A corrugated sheet with recycled high-density polyethylene (R-HDPE) was produced. The R-HDPE was collected from Merida’s Separation Plant. The wood came from the trimmings of different varieties of trees and shrubs that are periodically pruned. WPC sheets with virgin HDPE were prepared to assess its effect on the materials’ mechanical performance. The wood/HDPE weight ratio was 40/60. The performance of the WPC sheets was compared with that of commercial products with similar characteristics, namely acrylic and polyester sheets reinforced with fibreglass, and black asphalt-saturated cardboard sheets. Thus, the effect of natural weathering on the maximum tensile tearing force and on the maximum flexural load of the different types of sheets was evaluated. Although the mechanical performance of the WPC sheets was lower than that of the acrylic and polyacrylic sheets, their performance was much better than that of the cheap black asphalt-saturated cardboard sheets. So, they are a good option to be used as low-cost temporary roofing.

Discriminant Analysis can best be defined as a technique which allows the classification of an individual into several dictinctive populations on the basis of a set of measurements. Stepwise discriminant analysis (SDA) is concerned with selecting the most important variables whilst retaining the highest discrimination power possible. The process of selecting a smaller number of variables is often necessary for a variety number of reasons. In the existing statistical software packages SDA is based on the classic feature selection methods. Many problems with such stepwise procedures have been identified. In this work the new method based on the metaheuristic strategy tabu search will be presented together with the experimental results conducted on the selected benchmark datasets. The results are promising.

Background. Although a number of studies have examined sociodemographic, psychosocial, and environmental determinants of the level of physical activity (PA) for older people, little attention has been paid to the predictive power of cognitive strategies for independently living older adults. However, cognitive strategies have recently been considered to be critical in the management of day-to-day living. Methods. Data were collected from 243 men and women aged 55 years and older living in France using face-to-face interviews between 2011 and 2013. Results. A stepwise discriminant analysis selected five predictor variables (age, perceived health status, barriers’ self-efficacy, internal memory, and attentional control strategies) of the level of PA. The function showed that the rate of correct prediction was 73% for the level of PA. The calculated discriminant function based on the five predictor variables is useful for detecting individuals at high risk of lapses once engaged in regular PA. Conclusions. This study highlighted the need to consider cognitive functions as a determinant of the level of PA and, more specifically, those cognitive functions related to executive functions (internal memory and attentional control), to facilitate the maintenance of regular PA. These results are discussed in relation to successful aging.

With the continuous availability of massive experimental medical data has given impetus to a large effort in developing mathematical, statistical and computational intelligent techniques to infer models from medical databases. Feature selection has been an active research area in pattern recognition, statistics, and data mining communities. However, there have been relatively few studies on preprocessing data used as input for data mining systems in medical data. In this chapter, the authors focus on several feature selection methods as to their effectiveness in preprocessing input medical data. They evaluate several feature selection algorithms such as Mutual Information Feature Selection (MIFS), Fast Correlation-Based Filter (FCBF) and Stepwise Discriminant Analysis (STEPDISC) with machine learning algorithm naive Bayesian and Linear Discriminant analysis techniques. The experimental analysis of feature selection technique in medical databases has enable the authors to find small number of informative features leading to potential improvement in medical diagnosis by reducing the size of data set, eliminating irrelevant features, and decreasing the processing time.

Shape memory polymers represent a class of polymers that can recover its original shape under stimulus. This paper presents the preliminary results of a broader research programme that investigates the potential use of polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG), a glycol modified version of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), for the fabrication of smart bone tissue engineering scaffolds. PETG. A full characterization analysis is carried out, including chemical analysis, mechanical analysis and shape recovery characteristics. Chemical analysis show the presence of terephthalic acid (TPA), ethylene glycol (EG) and cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM) in the polymer structure. Mechanical analysis, considering a quasistatic tensile test, shows that PETG presents better than PET. Shape recovery is assessed using a cyclic thermomechanical experiment where stress and temperature are controlled during the programming and recovery phases and demonstrates that PETG is able to change and recover its initial shape.
