BACKGROUND Benign breast diseases (BBDs) are a common cause of breast problems in up to 30 % of women. The pathogenesis of BBD involves disturbances in the breast physiology. There is a necessity for thorough comprehensive, prompt diagnosis and management of the benign conditions to reduce the physical and psychological illness of the patients who are anxious about the possibility of the disease being a malignant one. METHODS This was a prospective study conducted in the Department of Surgical Oncology, GSL medical college from October 2016 to July 2018. Females presenting with breast lump, confirmed with fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), aged between 12 – 55 years and fit for surgery were included in the study. Those who did not submit the informed consent were excluded. Statistical analysis was performed by SPSS version-21 and MS Excel 2013. RESULTS Most (74 %) of the patients were between 20 and 40 years of age, 56 % were diagnosed to be fibroadenoma. In the study group, 82 % (41) participants with BBD were married. The most common presenting complaint in the study group was lump (50 %) in the breast followed by lump associated with pain (28 %). Patients with fibroadenoma mass had well defined features. CONCLUSIONS Lump was the most common clinical presentation followed by lump with pain. Based on the FNAC report, decision is made for management. Comprehensive and prompt preoperative diagnosis and management of the benign conditions is necessary to reduce the physical and psychological burden on the patients who are anxious about the possibility of malignancy. Introduction: Plasma cell mastitis is a rare benign suppurative disease of the breast based on the dilatation of mammary ducts and infiltration of plasma cells. Modern medicine focuses on surgical treatment. It is easy to recur after operation. Xiaojin Pill with natural musk is a oral traditional Chinese medicine and plays a role in benign breast diseases. There are very few reports on the use of Xiaojin Pill with natural musk in treating plasma cell mastitis yet. Cases: This paper reports 3 cases of plasma cell mastitis who received Xiaojin Pill with natural musk treatment. Patients were successfully treated after accepting Xiaojin Pill with natural musk for several weeks.

Biopsy material of patients with malignant and benign breast diseases was examined. HRG mRNA expression was detected in 70% of cases in biopsy material obtained from patients with nonspecific invasive carcinoma and in 66.7% of cases in biopsy material of patients with benign breast diseases. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed expression of collagen II, the beta-1 integrin, and E-cadherin – markers of epithelial–mesenchymal transition. The use of RT-qPCR combined with immunohistochemical study made it possible to identify atypical cells, which can be regarded as precancerous changes, in individual patients.

Benign breast disease constitutes any abnormality that upon further workup is found to be noncancerous and does not establish premalignant potential. Benign breast diseases can present in various ways, such as breast pain, a palpable breast lump, nipple discharge, or an imaging abnormality. Appropriate workup is essential to ensure that the new change is benign. This may entail additional imaging, biopsy, or surgery if necessary. Surgeons need to be able to recognize the presentation, appropriate workup, and treatment recommendations for the various benign breast diseases. This review addresses the broad range of benign breast lesions and their management recommendations.  This review contains 7 figures, 5 tables and 54 references Key words: benign breast disease, breast cyst, breast mass, breast pain, idiopathic granulomatous mastitis, nipple discharge, papilloma, periductal mastitis, sclerosing adenosis
