The book provides a new conceptual framework to explain the interaction of complex systems, specifically humans and their environment. It proposes that human physiology and the environment do not “connect” with each other in a direct, unidirectional manner, like a beaker pouring water into a cup. Rather, the authors propose the Biodynamic Interface Conjecture with the central axiom that complex systems cannot interact directly or exist in isolation due to temporally embedded functional interdependencies within and between systems. The authors propose that human physiology and the environment contribute to the formation of an interface, and by doing so they give rise to an intermediary that guides the interaction by letting some influences pass between the systems while restricting others. This proposition counters many structural approaches that assume that complex systems, such as the environment and humans, can transfer information directly between them while remaining discrete entities. Although developed for environmental health sciences, the conjecture has broader implications for the study of complex system interactions across various levels of organization, and the central role of time and temporal dynamics in system-to-system information exchange. This conjecture also argues against causal paradigms that (incorrectly) assume that systems are distinct entities interacting directly and ignore boundary conditions, and organizational levels, and complexity inherent in biological and environmental systems.

Complex systems are usually high-dimensional with intricate interactions among internal components, and may display complicated dynamics under different conditions. While it is difficult to measure detailed dynamics of each component, proper macroscopic description of a complex system is crucial for quantitative studies. In biological systems, each cell is a complex system containing a huge number of molecular components that are interconnected with each other through intricate molecular interaction networks. Here, we consider gene regulatory networks in a cell, and introduce individual entropy as a macroscopic variable to quantify the transcriptional dynamics in response to changes in random perturbations and/or network structures. The proposed individual entropy measures the information entropy of a system at each instant with respect to a basal reference state, and may provide temporal dynamics to characterize switches of system states. Individual entropy provides a method to quantify the stationary macroscopic dynamics of a gene set that is dependent on the gene regulation connections, and can be served as an indicator for the evolution of network structure variation. Moreover, the individual entropy with reference to a preceding state enables us to characterize different dynamic patterns generated from varying network structures. Our results show that the proposed individual entropy can be a valuable macroscopic variable of complex systems in characterizing the transition processes from order to disorder dynamics, and to identify the critical events during the transition process.

Although much of the evidence is anecdotal and circumstantial, there are mounting concerns that environmental health risks are borne disproportionately by members of the population who are poor and nonwhite. We examine the central role of environmental health research in defining the dimensions of the problem, understanding its causes, and identifying solutions. Environmental health sciences, including epidemiology, exposure analysis, pharmacokinetics, toxicology, and surveillance monitoring, must be employed to determine the extent to which society has achieved “equity” and “justice” in safeguarding the health and safety of its citizens. By improving our ability to identify, evaluate, prevent, and/or reduce risks for all members of society, environmental health research can contribute directly to fair and equitable protection for everyone, regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, race, or socioeconomic status.

The article investigates the role of communicative-functional approach in the translation of scientific and technical literature, when the translation itself is seen as a tool to accomplish purposeful activity of communicators, representatives of different interlingual groups. In practical terms, the difficulties of translating scientific and technical texts are due to the peculiarities of scientific style, insufficient understanding of the terminology of a particular field of knowledge, which complicates the choice of adequate translation solutions. In this context, an important role is played by the translation strategy, where the communicativefunctional approach dominates. The translation is implicitly included in the communication structure between the author and the recipient. The relevance of the article is determined by the necessity of studying the problems of scientific and technical literature translation, taking into account the current realities of interlanguage information exchange. Although previous researchers have demonstrated that people often prefer potential rather than achievement when evaluating other people or products, few have focused on the boundary conditions on this effect. We proposed that the preference for potential would emerge when individuals’ perception of economic mobility was high, but the preference for achievement would emerge among individuals with low perceptions of economic mobility. Our results showed that people paid more attention to the future (vs. the present) when their perception of economic mobility was high; this, in turn, promoted more favorable reactions toward potential (vs. achievement). Thus, we suggested circumstances under which highlighting a person’s potential for future success is effective and those when it is not effective. Moreover, we revealed the important role of individual perceptions regarding economic mobility in driving this effect.

Purpose This paper aims to systematically investigate the direct and indirect effects of four types of support – peer instrumental support, peer emotional support, platform business support and platform communication support – on seller trade volume in social commerce. It also aims to uncover the path of support-to-sales of the seller from a platform perspective and provides a more complete picture of the social commerce phenomenon. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses multi-source data including primary survey data and secondary data on trade volume to test the hypotheses. PROCESS mediation model is used to analyze the multi-source data set. Findings This study finds that the positive effects of peer instrumental support, platform business support and platform communication support on seller trade volume are fully mediated by seller collaborative information exchange. Also, peer emotional support has a significant negative effect on seller trade volume and collaborative information exchange can serve as a buffer to mitigate the negative effect. Research limitations/implications The authors provide new insights into what types of support are or are not conducive to improving transaction volume of individual sellers and highlight the mediating role of seller information exchange in this value generation process in social commerce. These findings advance current knowledge of how seller interactions increase value in social commerce. The chosen research setting may limit the generalizability of the findings of this study. Practical implications This paper offers valuable implications for social commerce platforms on how to better serve their sellers to achieve high growth. Specifically, the findings suggest that platforms should encourage instrumental support and information exchange among peer sellers. In addition, platforms should expand seller support from a single-focus on sellers’ business to a dual-focus on both sellers’ business and socialization in social commerce. Originality/value This paper fulfills an identified need to study how sellers can better derive value from the social interactions and how social commerce platforms can effectively influence transactions, support sales and serve as a selling platform.
