Abstract Increasing incidence of the poplar-and-willow borer (Cryptorhynchus lapathi) in Pacific Northwest hybrid poplar plantations has resulted in reduced wood quality and stem breakage. Three replicated, 5-yr-old clone trials established in the vicinity of Pullman, WA were rated for host attack preference. Attacks by C. lapathi were found to be significant for plantation, clone, and the clone by plantation interaction. Attack rating among clones was affected by genotype. Those clones possessing P. nigra parentage, including Lombardy poplar, OP-367, and PC-6, showed significantly lower attacks across all plantations. Within the P. trichocarpa × P. deltoides (TD) hybrids, both 58-280 and 50-194 consistently exhibited lower attacks compared to the remaining four TD hybrids. Plantation, clone, and the plantation by clone interaction affected tree growth parameters significantly. Mean clone stem volume across sites from largest to smallest was: 49-177, OP-367, 50-197, 52-225, PC-6, 50-194, 58-280, 15-29, and Lombardy poplar. Attempts to correlate attack rating with any parameter of tree size were unsuccessful. Combining growth data and attack rating, OP-367 would be recommended for planting in arid regions east of the Cascade Mountains, followed by PC-6, 50-194 and 58-280. Future hybrid poplar breeding for this region should consider P. nigra as a parent. West. J. Appl. For. 18(4):276–280.

There are few published studies examining the effects of the interaction of seedling size and vegetation control on the growth of Pacific Northwest conifer species. Data from two vegetation management studies encompassing five planting sites, four conifer species, and two stock types were analyzed to determine the relative effects of seedling size at planting and intensity of vegetation control on subsequent seedling growth. Study 1 tested eight combinations of annual broadcast weed control or no weed control applied over the course of 5 years. Study 2 tested spot herbicide applications of differing area, as well as herbaceous-only and woody-only control treatments. The effect of seedling size was determined by analysis of covariance, with basal diameter as the covariate. Both seedling size and weed control increased growth of all conifer species through 4, 5, or 12 years, but responses varied by species and site. Diameter and height responses to weed control and seedling size were additive, whereas volume differences between treatments increased with increasing seedling size. The implication for management is that the volume return from increased weed control is maximized by planting the largest possible seedlings; conversely, the volume from increased seedling size is maximized at the highest weed control intensities.

Abstract Background: Pubertal growth data in Thai children has been reported as cross-sectional studies. There is no longitudinal study in Thai children. Objective: Investigate the longitudinal growth data in normal Thai children including the relationship between age at pubertal onset and other growth parameters. Material and method: Eighty-eight normal children (44 boys, 44 girls) were longitudinally assessed for the growth and puberty until they reached their final adult height. Pubertal staging was assessed by the Tanner method. Results: Mean age of pubertal onset was 10.2 ± 1.2 years for girls and 12.2 ± 1.0 years for boys. Total pubertal height gain was 18.3 ± 4.0 cm for girls and 22.3 ± 4.4 cm for boys. Total pubertal height gain had a negative correlation with age at pubertal onset for girls, but not for boys. Conclusion: The onset of puberty was not much changed from previous studies. Girls with early puberty had a higher pubertal height gain. This might be due to a compensatory mechanism. These longitudinal growth data can be used as a reference in clinical practices for Thai children.

Soil salinization is an important abiotic factor negatively affecting plant growth, development and productivity. Fast-growing poplar and willow trees are important plants for bioenergy production demonstrating varying degrees of adaptation to different habitats. The study of salt resistance in different clones of poplars and willows will reveal genotypes that can be planted in saline soils for producing biomass for the bioenergy industry. Therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate the effects of salt stress on poplar plants of clone 'INRA 353-38' (Populus tremula × P. tremuloides) and willow clone 'Zhytomyrska – 1' (Salix sp.) under in vitro culture. For this purpose the plants were cultivated on MS nutrient medium with the addition of sodium chloride in concentrations 25 mM, 50 mM and 100 mM. The control plants were grown on the sodium chloridefree medium. The plant status (with a 4-score scale), the intensity of their growth (by shoot length) and rooting capacity (by the number of roots) were assessed on the 10th and the 30th day of cultivation. The results obtained indicate a high level of sensitivity to sodium chloride of both studied clones under in vitro cultivation. But the willow 'Zhytomyrska – 1' had a higher sensitivity to salt stress comparing to hybrid polar 'ІNRA 353-38' since growth parameters of willow were significantly decreased even under the concentration of sodium chloride 50 mM, and in the case of short term influence (10 days) of the highest concentration of sodium chloride (100 mM) all willow plants terminated their growth and quickly died. The growth parameters of hybrid poplar were declined within a month, mainly under the highest concentration of sodium chloride, but even under such conditions some part of the shoots were able to survive.

Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) represents a renewable bioenergy source in arid regions, where it is used to produce not only biodiesel from the seed oil, but also various non-oil biomass products, such as fertilizer, from the seed cake following oil extraction from the seeds. Jatropha plants also generate large amounts of fallen leaves during the cold or drought season, but few studies have examined the utilization of this litter biomass. Therefore, in this study, we produced biochar from the fallen leaves of jatropha using a simple and economical carbonizer that was constructed from a standard 200 L oil drum, which would be suitable for use in rural communities, and evaluated the use of the generated biochar as a soil conditioner for the cultivation of Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris subsp. cicla “Fordhook Giant”) as a model vegetable in an acidic and undernourished soil in Botswana. Biochar application improved several growth parameters of Swiss chard, such as the total leaf area. In addition, the dry weights of the harvested shoots were 1.57, 1.88, and 2.32 fold higher in plants grown in soils containing 3%, 5%, and 10% biochar, respectively, compared with non-applied soil, suggesting that the amount of biochar applied to the soil was positively correlated with yield. Together, these observations suggest that jatropha fallen leaf biochar could function as a soil conditioner to enhance crop productivity.

The present paper evaluates the height, diameter and stem volume of parental tree progenies. These Norway spruce progenies are compared with the control estimated from tables. The control was overperformed in all measured growth parameters. Heights of selected spruce progenies at the age of 26 years ranged from 9.2 m (K10) to 10.7 m (K2). The control height was 6.4 m. In the evaluation of diameters, progeny K4 showed the best mean dbh (13.7 cm) while the progeny K17 was rated as the thinnest (10.5 cm). We compared these data with the control diameter of 6.5 cm. The mean volumes of selected material varied from 0.097 m<sup>3 </sup>(K9) to 0.047 m<sup>3 </sup>(K17) while the kontrol presented 0.0172 m<sup>3</sup>.
