Abstract Transition to the role of mothering is one of the most important events in a woman’s life. While childbirth is a biological event, pregnancy and the experiences around it are more influenced by social structure, which is shaped by cultural perceptions and practices. The aim of this study was to explore cultural context during maternal role attainment in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in Iran. The study was part of a grounded theory study on how the mothers of preterm neonates go through maternal role attainment. Data collection was carried out by purposeful sampling from 20 participants (15 mothers of preterm neonates and 5 NICU nurses). Data were analysed according to Corbin and Strauss’s (2015) approach. Four categories of childbearing culture emerged: ‘The necessity of childbearing’, ‘Childbearing rituals’, ‘Maternal persistent presence’ and ‘Attitudes and religious beliefs’. The findings showed that the special beliefs and practices in Iranian culture affected all of the participants’ reactions to mothering process. Culture is one of the most important factors affecting the development of motherhood in Iran. In order to provide sensitive and culturally appropriate care, nurses should be aware of the general impact of cultural norms and values on the process of maternal role attainment and strive to meet the cultural needs of all mothers.

Objectives: To assess the association of perceived social support with postnatal depression among puerperal women of Faisalabad, Pakistan. Methods: It was a case-control study carried out during a period of 18 months (1-1-2019 to 30-06-2020). By using purposive sampling technique 284 postpartum women were enrolled from Allied hospital and Children hospital Faisalabad. The postnatal depression was diagnosed with Edinburg Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS).The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) was used to measure the social support that was perceived by women. Results: According to cut-off score ≥13 on EPDS 37.3% women were found depressed while 62.7% women were found non-depressed. The mean EPDS score ± SD was 10.12 ± 6.27 (min score 0; max score 27). The perceived social support from significant other, family and friends was found as significant predictor of postnatal depression. With one-point increase in global perceived social support, the postnatal depression decreased by 0.1 points on EPDS scale (p = 0.03) among women in normal vaginal delivery group, by 0.2 points in cesarean section group (p <0.001) and the postnatal depression decreased by 0.2 points in total sample (p < 0.001). Conclusion: A poor perceived social support from significant other, family and friends is a significant risk factor for postnatal depression among puerperal women.

Womens perception on childbirth experience is frequently related to pain struggle, regardless the type of birth. We aimed to present our Departments experience on pharmacologically treating postpartum related pain. We developed a 6 months retrospective, descriptive study which included a number of 305 patients. Two sample patients were formed depending on the type of birth. In the sample of vaginal delivery a correlation between episiotomy and Paracetamol consumption was found (Pearson correlation of 0.238). In the sample of cesarean section births, for Acupan, Ketoprofen and Algifen the correlations with epidural anesthesia are negative and statistically significant at the 99.9% confidence level.
